▶ Tobit died peacefully at the age of a hundred and twelve, and received an honorable burial in Nineveh.

서둘러 메디아로 피신하여라. 나훔이 니네베를 두고 선포한 하느님의 말씀을 나는 믿는다. 그 모든 말씀이 그대로 이루어져서 아시리아와 니네베에 그대로 실현될 것이다. 하느님께서 파견하신 이스라엘의 예언자들이 한 말씀이 모두 실현될 것이다. 그 말씀들은 하나도 빠지지 않고 모두 제때에 성취될 것이다. 그러니 아시리아나 바빌론보다 메디아가 더 안전하다. 하느님께서 하신 말씀은 모두 그대로 실행되고 그대로 이루어진다는 것을 나는 알고 또 믿는다. 그 말씀들은 하나도 어김이 없다. 그리고 이스라엘 땅에 사는 우리의 동포들은 모두 그 좋은 땅에서 쫓겨나 흩어지고 유배를 갈 것이다. 이스라엘의 온 땅이 황무지가 될뿐더러 사마리아와 예루살렘까지 황무지가 되고, 하느님의 집은 불에 탄 채 얼마 동안 슬픔에 잠겨 있을 것이다.

▶ and flee into Media, for I believe God's word which was spoken by Nahum against Nineveh. It shall all happen, and shall overtake Assyria and Nineveh; indeed, whatever was said by Israel's prophets, whom God commissioned, shall occur. Not one of all the oracles shall remain unfulfilled, but everything shall take place in the time appointed for it. So it will be safer in Media than in Assyria or Babylon. For I know and believe that whatever God has spoken will be accomplished. It shall happen, and not a single word of the prophecies shall prove false. "As for our kinsmen who dwell in Israel, they shall all be scattered and led away into exile from the Good Land. The entire country of Israel shall become desolate; even Samaria and Jerusalem shall become desolate! God's temple there shall be burnt to the ground and shall be desolate for a while.

그렇지만 하느님께서는 다시 그들에게 자비를 베푸시어 이스라엘 땅으로 돌아가게 하실 것이다. 그러면 그들은 하느님의 집을 다시 지을 것이다. 그러나 그 집은 정해진 때가 다 찰 때까지 첫 번째 집과 같지는 않을 것이다. 그 뒤에 모두 유배에서 돌아가 예루살렘을 화려하게 재건할 것이다. 그리고 그곳에 이스라엘의 예언자들이 말한 대로 하느님의 집도 세워질 것이다.

▶ But God will again have mercy on them and bring them back to the land of Israel. They shall rebuild the temple, but it will not be like the first one, until the era when the appointed times shall be completed. Afterward all of them shall return from their exile, and they shall rebuild Jerusalem with splendor. In her the temple of God shall also be rebuilt; yes, it will be rebuilt for all generations to come, just as the prophets of Israel said of her.

온 세상에 사는 민족들도 모두 마음을 돌이켜 하느님을 진심으로 경외할 것이다. 그리고 모두 자기들을 속여 잘못된 길로 이끈 우상들을 버리고,

▶ All the nations of the world shall be converted and shall offer God true worship; all shall abandon their idols which have deceitfully led them into error,

의로운 일을 하며 영원하신 하느님을 찬미할 것이다. 그날에 구원을 받고 하느님을 진심으로 생각하는 이스라엘의 모든 자손이 한데 모여 예루살렘으로 가서, 자기들에게 주어진 아브라함의 땅에서 영원히 안심하고 살 것이다. 하느님을 진심으로 사랑하는 이들은 기뻐하고, 죄와 불의를 저지르는 자들은 온 세상에서 없어질 것이다.

▶ and shall bless the God of the ages in righteousness. Because all the Israelites who are to be saved in those days will truly be mindful of God, they shall be gathered together and go to Jerusalem; in security shall they dwell forever in the land of Abraham, which will be given over to them. Those who sincerely love God shall rejoice, but those who become guilty of sin shall completely disappear from the land.

이제 얘들아, 내가 너희에게 분부한다. 하느님을 진심으로 섬기고 그분께서 좋아하시는 일을 하여라. 너희 자식들도 잘 타일러서, 의로운 일을 하고 자선을 베풀게 하여라. 언제나 진심으로, 그리고 힘을 다하여 하느님을 생각하며 그분의 이름을 찬미하게 하여라. 얘야, 이제 너는 니네베에 머무르지 말고 이곳을 떠나라.

언제가 되든 너의 어머니를 내 곁에 묻게 되면, 그날 밤도 이 성읍의 경계 안에서는 지내지 마라. 내가 보니 이곳에는 온갖 불의와 온갖 사기가 판을 치는데도, 사람들은 부끄러워하지 않는구나. 얘야, 나답이 자기를 키워 준 아키카르에게 한 짓을 보아라. 아키카르가 산 채로 땅속에 들어가야 하지 않았더냐? 그러나 하느님께서는 그 파렴치한 행위를 나답에게 직접 되갚으셨다. 그리하여 아키카르는 빛을 보고, 나답은 아키카르를 죽이려고 꾀하였기 때문에 영원한 어둠 속으로 들어갔다. 아키카르는 자선을 베푼 덕분에 나답이 쳐 놓은 죽음의 올무에서 빠져나오고, 오히려 나답이 그 죽음의 올무에 걸려 파멸하였다.

▶ The day you bury your mother next to me, do not even stay overnight within the confines of the city. For I see that people here shamelessly commit all sorts of wickedness and treachery. Think, my son, of all that Nadab did to Ahiqar, the very one who brought him up: Ahiqar went down alive into the earth! Yet God made Nadab's disgraceful crime rebound against him. Ahiqar came out again into the light, but Nadab went into the everlasting darkness, for he had tried to kill Ahiqar. Because Ahiqar had given alms to me, he escaped from the deadly trap Nadab had set for him. But Nadab himself fell into the deadly trap, and it destroyed him.

그러니 얘들아, 자선이 무엇을 가져오는지 보아라. 그리고 불의가 무엇을 가져오는지 보아라. 죽음뿐이다. 이제 내 숨이 끊어지려고 하는구나.” 사람들이 토빗을 침상에 눕히자 그가 죽었다. 그리고 장엄한 장례식과 함께 묻혔다.

그 뒤에 어머니가 죽자 토비야는 어머니를 아버지 곁에 묻었다. 그리고 아내와 함께 메디아로 가 엑바타나에서 장인 라구엘과 살았다.

▶ They placed him on his bed and he died; and he received an honorable burial. When Tobiah's mother died, he buried her next to his father. He then departed with his wife and children for Media, where he settled in Ecbatana with his father-in-law Raguel.

그는 늙은 처부모를 존경하는 마음으로 잘 모시다가, 메디아의 엑바타나에 그들을 묻었다. 그리하여 그는 자기 아버지 토빗만이 아니라 라구엘의 재산까지 물려받았다.

▶ He took respectful care of his aging father-in-law and mother-in-law; and he buried them at Ecbatana in Media. Then he inherited Raguel's estate as well as that of his father Tobit.

그는 죽기 전에 니네베가 멸망하였다는 소식을 들었고, 또 메디아 임금 키아카레스가 니네베에서 포로로 잡은 자들이 메디아로 끌려오는 광경을 보았다. 그리고 하느님께서 니네베와 아시리아 사람들에게 하신 모든 일을 두고 하느님을 찬미하였다. 이렇게 토비야는 죽기 전에 니네베를 두고 기뻐하며 영원무궁하신 주 하느님을 찬미하였다.

▶ But before he died, he heard of the destruction of Nineveh and saw its effects. He witnessed the exile of the city's inhabitants when Cyaxares, king of Media, led them captive into Media. Tobiah praised God for all that he had done against the citizens of Nineveh and Assyria. Before dying he rejoiced over Nineveh's destruction, and he blessed the Lord God forever and ever. Amen.
