▶ That same day Tobit remembered the money he had deposited with Gabael at Rages in Media, and he thought,

‘자, 내가 죽음을 간청하였으니, 죽기 전에 내 아들 토비야를 불러 이 돈 이야기를 어찌 하지 않을 수 있으랴?’ 하고 마음속으로 말하였다.

▶ "Now that I have asked for death, why should I not call my son Tobiah and let him know about this money before I die?"

그리하여 자기 아들 토비야를 불렀다. 그가 오자 이렇게 말하였다. “나를 잘 묻어 다오. 그리고 네 어머니를 공경하고 어머니가 살아 있는 동안 내내 저버리는 일이 없도록 하여라. 네 어머니가 좋아하는 일을 해 드리고 무슨 일로든 어머니 마음을 슬프게 하지 마라.

▶ So he called his son Tobiah; and when he came, he said to him: "My son, when I die, give me a decent burial. Honor your mother, and do not abandon her as long as she lives. Do whatever pleases her, and do not grieve her spirit in any way.

얘야, 네가 배 속에 있을 때에 네 어머니가 너 때문에 겪은 그 많은 위험을 생각해 보아라. 그리고 네 어머니가 죽거든 나와 나란히 같은 무덤에 묻어 다오.

▶ Remember, my son, that she went through many trials for your sake while you were in her womb. And when she dies, bury her in the same grave with me.

|
얘야, 평생토록 늘 주님을 생각하고, 죄를 짓거나 주님의 계명을 어기려는 뜻을 품지 마라. 평생토록 선행을 하고 불의한 길은 걷지 마라.

▶ "Through all your days, my son, keep the Lord in mind, and suppress every desire to sin or to break his commandments. Perform good works all the days of your life, and do not tread the paths of wrongdoing.

▶ For if you are steadfast in your service, your good works will bring success, not only to you, but also to all those who live uprightly.

네가 가진 것에서 자선을 베풀어라. 그리고 자선을 베풀 때에는 아까워하지 마라. 누구든 가난한 이에게서 얼굴을 돌리지 마라. 그래야 하느님께서도 너에게서 얼굴을 돌리지 않으실 것이다.

|
네가 가진 만큼, 많으면 많은 대로 자선을 베풀어라. 네가 가진 것이 적으면 적은 대로 자선을 베풀기를 두려워하지 마라.

▶ Son, give alms in proportion to what you own. If you have great wealth, give alms out of your abundance; if you have but little, distribute even some of that. But do not hesitate to give alms;

네가 곤궁에 빠지게 되는 날을 위하여 좋은 보물을 쌓아 두는 것이다.

사실 자선을 베푸는 모든 이에게는 그 자선이 지극히 높으신 분 앞에 바치는 훌륭한 예물이 된다.

▶ Alms are a worthy offering in the sight of the Most High for all who give them.
|

|
얘야, 어떠한 간음도 저지르지 않도록 조심하여라. 무엇보다 먼저 네 조상의 후손들 가운데에서 아내를 맞아들이고, 네 아버지 부족 밖의 낯선 여자를 아내로 맞아들이는 일이 없도록 하여라. 우리는 예언자들의 자손이다. 얘야, 우리의 옛 조상 노아, 아브라함, 이사악, 야곱을 생각해 보아라. 그분들은 모두 자기 친족 가운데에서 부인을 맞아들여, 자녀들로 복을 받으셨다. 이제 그 후손들이 땅을 차지할 것이다.

▶ "Be on your guard, son, against every form of immorality, and above all, marry a woman of the lineage of your forefathers. Do not marry a stranger who is not of your father's tribe, because we are sons of the prophets. My boy, keep in mind Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, our fathers from of old: all of them took wives from among their own kinsmen and were blessed in their children. Remember that their posterity shall inherit the land.

그러니 이제 얘야, 네 동포들을 사랑하여라. 그리고 네 동포들에 대하여, 네 겨레의 아들딸들에 대하여 마음속으로 교만한 생각을 품고서는, 그들 가운데에서 네 아내를 맞아들이지 않는 일이 없도록 하여라. 교만은 파멸과 큰 혼란을 가져온다. 또 나태는 손실과 큰 곤궁을 가져온다. 나태는 굶주림의 어머니다.

▶ Therefore, my son, love your kinsmen. Do not be so proudhearted toward your kinsmen, the sons and daughters of your people, as to refuse to take a wife for yourself from among them. For in such arrogance there is ruin and great disorder. Likewise, in worthlessness there is decay and dire poverty, for worthlessness is the mother of famine.

|
누가 네 일을 해 주었든지 그의 품삯을 다음 날까지 쥐고 있지 말고 바로 내주어라. 네가 하느님을 섬기면 보상을 받는다. 얘야, 무슨 일이든 조심해서 하고, 어떠한 행동이든 교육을 받은 사람답게 하여라.

▶ "Do not keep with you overnight the wages of any man who works for you, but pay him immediately. If you thus behave as God's servant, you will receive your reward. Keep a close watch on yourself, my son, in everything you do, and discipline yourself in all your conduct.

네가 싫어하는 일은 아무에게도 하지 마라. 술은 취하도록 마시지 말고, 취한 채 너의 길을 걷는 일이 없도록 하여라.

▶ Do to no one what you yourself dislike. Do not drink wine till you become drunk, nor let drunkenness accompany you on your way.

배고픈 이에게 먹을 것을 나누어 주고, 헐벗은 이들에게 입을 것을 나누어 주어라. 너에게 남는 것은 다 자선으로 베풀고, 자선을 베풀 때에는 아까워하지 마라.

▶ "Seek counsel from every wise man, and do not think lightly of any advice that can be useful.

언제나 주 너의 하느님을 찬미하여라. 그리고 너의 길을 올바르게 해 주십사고, 너의 길과 뜻이 성공을 거두게 해 주십사고 그분께 간청하여라. 어떠한 민족도 스스로 제 뜻을 이루지는 못한다. 모든 좋은 것을 주시는 분은 주님이시다. 그분께서는 또한 달리 원하시면 저승 밑바닥으로 내던지기도 하신다. 그러니 이제 얘야, 이 분부를 늘 기억하고 네 마음에서 지워지지 않도록 하여라.

▶ At all times bless the Lord God, and ask him to make all your paths straight and to grant success to all your endeavors and plans. For no pagan nation possesses good counsel, but the Lord himself gives all good things. If the Lord chooses, he raises a man up; but if he should decide otherwise, he casts him down to the deepest recesses of the nether world. So now, my son, keep in mind my commandments, and never let them be erased from your heart.

그러니 얘야, 우리가 가난하게 되었다고 해서 두려운 생각을 품지 마라. 네가 하느님을 경외하고 모든 죄악을 피하며 주 너의 하느님께서 보시기에 좋은 일을 하면, 큰 재산을 얻을 것이다.”
