|
선을 행할 때에는 누구에게 하는지를 알아라. 그래야 너의 선행에 고마움이 돌아오리라.

|
경건한 이에게 선을 행하여라. 그러면 보상을 받으리라. 그에게서 보상을 받지 못하면 지극히 높으신 분에게서 받으리라.

▶ Do good to the just man and reward will be yours, if not from him, from the LORD.

악행을 고집하는 자에게는 좋은 일이 없다. 자선을 베풀지 않는 자도 마찬가지다.

▶ No good comes to him who gives comfort to the wicked, nor is it an act of mercy that he does.

|
경건한 이는 도와주고 죄인은 돕지 마라.

▶ Give to the good man, refuse the sinner; refresh the downtrodden, give nothing to the proud man.

|
겸손한 이에게 선을 행하고 불경한 자를 돕지 마라. 불경한 자에게는 음식을 감추고 주지 마라. 그가 음식을 먹고 너를 제압할까 두렵다. 네가 그에게 한 모든 선행의 대가로 악행이 두 배로 너를 찾을 것이기 때문이다.

▶ No arms for combat should you give him, lest he use them against yourself;

지극히 높으신 분께서 죄인들을 미워하시고 불경한 자들에게 징벌로 되갚아 주실 것이다. 그분께서는 징벌의 날까지 그들을 지켜보신다.

행복할 때는 친구를 알아보기 힘들지만 불행할 때는 원수도 숨지 않는다.

▶ In our prosperity we cannot know our friends; in adversity an enemy will not remain concealed.

행복하면 원수들이 슬퍼하고 불행하면 친구가 떨어져 나간다.

▶ When a man is successful even his enemy is friendly; in adversity even his friend disappears.

|
네 원수를 결코 믿지 마라. 그의 사악함은 구리를 녹슬게 하는 것과 같다.

▶ Never trust your enemy, for his wickedness is like corrosion in bronze.

|
원수가 비록 자신을 낮추고 굽혀 온다 할지라도 정신을 차리고 그를 경계하여라. 거울을 닦는 사람처럼 그를 대하고 마지막까지 녹슬게 하지 않는지 살펴보아라.

▶ Even though he acts humbly and peaceably toward you, take care to be on your guard against him. Rub him as one polishes a brazen mirror, and you will find that there is still corrosion.

원수를 네 곁에 두지 마라. 그가 너를 쓰러뜨리고 네 자리를 차지할지 모른다. 그를 네 오른편에 앉히지 마라. 그가 네 지위를 노릴지도 모른다. 너는 마지막에야 내 말을 깨닫고 내 가르침이 마음에 사무치리라.

▶ Let him not stand near you, lest he oust you and take your place. Let him not sit at your right hand, lest he then demand your seat, And in the end you appreciate my advice, when you groan with regret, as I warned you.

뱀에게 물린 마술사와 들짐승에게 가까이 간 자들을 모두 누가 동정하겠느냐?

▶ Who pities a snake charmer when he is bitten, or anyone who goes near a wild beast?

그와 같이 죄인을 가까이한 자와 그의 죄악에 끼어든 자를 아무도 동정하지 않으리라.

▶ So is it with the companion of the proud man, who is involved in his sins:

그는 잠시 네 곁에 서 있겠지만 네가 비틀거릴 때는 너를 떠나리라.

▶ While you stand firm, he makes no bold move; but if you slip, he cannot hold back.

원수는 입으로 달콤하게 말하지만 마음으로는 너를 구렁에 처넣을 궁리를 한다. 원수는 그 눈에 눈물을 보이지만 기회만 잡으면 피 흘리는 일에 만족할 줄을 모르리라.

▶ With his lips an enemy speaks sweetly, but in his heart he schemes to plunge you into the abyss. Though your enemy has tears in his eyes, if given the chance, he will never have enough of your blood.

|
불행이 너에게 닥치면 네 앞에서 원수를 보게 되리라. 그는 너를 돕는 체하다가 발꿈치를 걷어차 쓰러뜨리리라.

▶ If evil comes upon you, you will find him at hand; feigning to help, he will trip you up,

그러고 나서 그는 머리를 흔들고 손뼉을 치며 끊임없이 수군거리고 얼굴을 바꾸리라.

▶ Then he will nod his head and clap his hands and hiss repeatedly, and show his true face.
