주님의 말씀이 나에게 내렸다.

▶ Thus the word of the LORD came to me:
|

“사람의 아들아, 네 동포에게 일러라. 그들에게 이렇게 말하여라. ‘내가 어떤 나라에 칼을 끌어들이려 할 때, 그 나라 백성이 저희 가운데에서 한 사람을 뽑아 파수꾼으로 세웠다고 하자.

▶ Son of man, speak thus to your countrymen: When I bring the sword against a country, and the people of this country select one of their number to be their watchman,

그는 자기 나라로 칼이 쳐들어오는 것을 보면, 나팔을 불어 백성에게 경고할 것이다.

|
|
▶ and the watchman, seeing the sword coming against the country, blows the trumpet to warn the people,
|
|

|
그런데 어떤 사람이 나팔 소리를 듣고도 경고를 받아들이지 않아서, 칼이 쳐들어와 그를 잡아간다면, 그가 죽은 책임은 자신에게 있다.

|
|
▶ anyone hearing but not heeding the warning of the trumpet and therefore slain by the sword that comes against him, shall be responsible for his own death.
|

|
나팔 소리를 듣고도 경고를 받아들이지 않았으므로, 그가 죽은 책임이 자신에게 있는 것이다. 경고를 받아들였다면 그는 목숨을 구할 수 있었을 것이다.

▶ He heard the trumpet blast yet refused to take warning; he is responsible for his own death, for had he taken warning he would have escaped with his life.

그러나 칼이 쳐들어오는 것을 보고도 파수꾼이 나팔을 불지 않아, 백성이 경고를 받지 못하였는데 칼이 쳐들어와서 그들 가운데 어떤 사람을 잡아간다면, 그는 자기 죄 때문에 잡혀가는 것이지만, 그가 죽은 책임은 내가 파수꾼에게 묻겠다.’

|
▶ But if the watchman sees the sword coming and fails to blow the warning trumpet, so that the sword comes and takes anyone, I will hold the watchman responsible for that person's death, even though that person is taken because of his own sin.

|
너 사람의 아들아, 나는 너를 이스라엘 집안의 파수꾼으로 세웠다. 그러므로 너는 내 입에서 나가는 말을 들을 때마다, 나를 대신하여 그들에게 경고해야 한다.

▶ You, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel; when you hear me say anything, you shall warn them for me.
|

|
가령 내가 악인에게 '악인아, 너는 반드시 죽어야 한다.'고 할 때, 네가 악인에게 그 악한 길을 버리도록 경고하는 말을 하지 않으면, 그 악인은 자기 죄 때문에 죽겠지만, 그가 죽은 책임은 너에게 묻겠다.

▶ If I tell the wicked man that he shall surely die, and you do not speak out to dissuade the wicked man from his way, he (the wicked man) shall die for his guilt, but I will hold you responsible for his death.

|
그러나 네가 그에게 자기 길에서 돌아서라고 경고하였는데도, 그가 자기 길에서 돌아서지 않으면, 그는 자기 죄 때문에 죽고, 너는 목숨을 보존할 것이다.”

▶ But if you warn the wicked man, trying to turn him from his way, and he refuses to turn from his way, he shall die for his guilt, but you shall save yourself.

“너 사람의 아들아, 이스라엘 집안에게 말하여라. ‘너희는 ′우리의 죄와 죄악이 우리를 짓눌러, 우리가 그것들 때문에 스러져 가는데, 어떻게 산단 말인가?′ 하고 말한다.’

▶ As for you, son of man, speak to the house of Israel: You people say, "Our crimes and our sins weigh us down; we are rotting away because of them. How can we survive?"
|

|
그러니 그들에게 말하여라. ‘내 생명을 걸고 말한다. 주 하느님의 말이다. 나는 악인의 죽음을 기뻐하지 않는다. 오히려 악인이 자기 길을 버리고 돌아서서 사는 것을 기뻐한다. 돌아서라. 너희 악한 길에서 돌아서라. 이스라엘 집안아, 너희가 어찌하여 죽으려 하느냐?’

▶ Answer them: As I live, says the Lord GOD, I swear I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked man, but rather in the wicked man's conversion, that he may live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! Why should you die, O house of Israel?
|

|
너 사람의 아들아, 네 동포에게 말하여라. ‘의인이라도 죄를 짓는 날에는, 그의 의로움이 그를 구해 주지 못한다. 악인이라도 자기의 악을 버리고 돌아서는 날에는, 그 악에 걸려 넘어지지 않는다. 의인이라도 죄악을 저지르는 날에는 자기의 의로움으로 살 수 없다.

▶ As for you, son of man, tell your countrymen: The virtue which a man has practiced will not save him on the day that he sins; neither will the wickedness that a man has done bring about his downfall on the day that he turns from his wickedness (nor can the virtuous man, when he sins, remain alive).

|
내가 의인에게 반드시 살 것이라고 하였어도, 그가 자기의 의로움만 믿고 불의를 저지르면, 그의 의로운 행위는 하나도 기억되지 않은 채, 자기가 저지른 불의 때문에 죽을 것이다.

▶ Though I say to the virtuous man that he shall surely live, if he then presumes on his virtue and does wrong, none of his virtuous deeds shall be remembered; because of the wrong he has done, he shall die.

▶ And though I say to the wicked man that he shall surely die, if he turns away from his sin and does what is right and just,

담보로 받은 것을 돌려주고 강도 짓으로 뺏은 것을 배상하고, 생명의 규정들을 따르면서 불의를 저지르지 않으면, 그는 죽지 않고 반드시 살 것이다.

▶ giving back pledges, restoring stolen goods, living by the statutes that bring life, and doing no wrong, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

|
그가 저지른 죄악은 하나도 기억되지 않는다. 그 대신 공정과 정의를 실천하였으니 반드시 살 것이다.’

▶ None of the sins he committed shall be held against him; he has done what is right and just, he shall surely live.

그런데도 네 동포는 '주님의 길은 공평하지 않다.'고 말한다. 그러나 그들의 길이야말로 공평하지 않다.

▶ Yet your countrymen say, "The way of the LORD is not fair!"; but it is their way that is not fair.

|
의인이 자기 의로움을 버리고 돌아서서 불의를 저지르면, 그는 그 불의 때문에 죽을 것이다.

▶ When a virtuous man turns away from what is right and does wrong, he shall die for it.
|
|

|
그러나 악인이 자기의 악을 버리고 돌아서서 공정과 정의를 실천하면, 그는 그것들 때문에 살 것이다.

|
|
|
|
▶ But when a wicked man turns away from wickedness and does what is right and just, because of this he shall live.
|

|
그런데도 너희는 '주님의 길은 공평하지 않다.'고 말한다. 이스라엘 집안아, 나는 저마다 걸어온 길에 따라 너희를 심판하겠다."

▶ And still you say, "The way of the LORD is not fair!"? I will judge every one of you according to his ways, O house of Israel.

|
우리의 유배살이 제십이년 열째 달 초닷샛날에, 예루살렘에서 온 피난민 한 사람이 나에게 와서, “도성이 함락되었습니다.” 하고 말하였다.

▶ On the fifth day of the tenth month, in the twelfth year of our exile, the fugitive came to me from Jerusalem and said, "The city is taken!"

그 피난민이 오기 전날 저녁에, 주님의 손이 나에게 내리셨는데, 아침에 그가 나에게 오기 전에 그분께서 내 입을 열어 주셨다. 그래서 나는 입이 열려 더 이상 벙어리가 아니었다.

▶ The hand of the LORD had come upon me the evening before the fugitive arrived, and he opened my mouth when the fugitive reached me in the morning. My mouth was opened, and I was dumb no longer.

▶ Thus the word of the LORD came to me:

“사람의 아들아, 이스라엘 땅의 저 폐허에 사는 자들이 이런 말을 한다. ‘아브라함은 혼자이면서도 이 땅을 차지하였는데, 우리는 수가 많다. 그러니 이 땅은 틀림없이 우리에게 소유로 주어진 것이다.’

▶ Son of man, they who live in the ruins on the land of Israel reason thus: "Abraham, though but a single individual, received possession of the land; we, therefore, being many, have as permanent possession the land that has been given to us."

|
그러므로 그들에게 말하여라. ‘주 하느님이 이렇게 말한다. 너희는 고기를 피째 먹고, 너희 우상들에게 눈을 들어 올리며, 사람 피를 쏟는다. 그러면서 이 땅을 차지하겠다는 말이냐?

▶ Give them this answer: Thus says the Lord GOD: You eat on the mountains, you raise your eyes to your idols, you shed blood - yet you would keep possession of the land?

|
너희는 칼에 의지하면서 역겨운 짓을 저지르고, 저마다 이웃의 아내를 더럽힌다. 그러면서 이 땅을 차지하겠다는 말이냐?’

|
|
|
▶ You rely on your sword, you do abominable things, each one of you defiles his neighbor's wife - yet you would keep possession of the land?
|

|
그러니 그들에게 또 말하여라. ‘주 하느님이 이렇게 말한다. 내가 살아 있는 한, 폐허에 있는 자들은 칼에 맞아 쓰러질 것이다. 들판에 있는 자는 짐승에게 잡아먹히게 하겠다. 산성과 동굴에 있는 자들은 흑사병으로 죽을 것이다.

▶ Tell them this: Thus says the Lord GOD: As I live, those who are in the ruins I swear shall fall by the sword; those who are in the open field I have given to the wild beasts for food; and those who are in fastnesses and in caves shall die by the plague.
|

|
나는 그 땅을 황무지와 불모지로 만들겠다. 그리하여 그 땅의 자랑스러운 힘은 끝장이 나고, 이스라엘의 산악 지방은 황폐하게 되어 지나가는 사람도 없을 것이다.

▶ I will make the land a desolate waste, so that its proud strength will come to an end, and the mountains of Israel shall be so desolate that no one will cross them.
|

그들이 저지른 그 모든 역겨운 짓 때문에, 내가 이렇게 그 땅을 황무지와 불모지로 만들면, 그제야 그들은 내가 주님임을 알게 될 것이다.’”

▶ Thus they shall know that I am the LORD, when I make the land a desolate waste because of all the abominable things they have done.

▶ As for you, son of man, your countrymen are talking about you along the walls and in the doorways of houses. They say to one another, "Come and hear the latest word that comes from the LORD."

|
그러고서는 백성이 떼지어 모여들 듯 너에게 와서, 나의 백성으로 네 앞에 앉아 너의 말을 듣는다. 그러나 그 말을 실천하지는 않는다. 그들의 입에는 열정이 차서 그럴듯하게 행동하지만, 그들의 마음은 제 이익만 좇아간다.

▶ My people come to you as people always do; they sit down before you and hear your words, but they will not obey them, for lies are on their lips and their desires are fixed on dishonest gain.

보아라, 너는 그들에게, 악기를 잘 연주하고 목소리가 아름다운 사람이 부르는 사랑 노래와 같다. 그래서 그들은 네 말을 듣기는 하지만, 그것을 실천하지는 않는다.

▶ For them you are only a ballad singer, with a pleasant voice and a clever touch. They listen to your words, but they will not obey them.

그러다 네가 말한 것이 이루어지면, ─ 보아라, 그것은 이루어진다. ─ 그제야 그들은 저희 가운데에 예언자가 있었음을 알게 될 것이다.”

▶ But when it comes - and it is surely coming!-they shall know that there was a prophet among them.
