When the boy left home, accompanied by the angel, the dog followed Tobiah out of the house and went with them. The travelers walked till nightfall, and made camp beside the Tigris River.

▶ 그리하여 그 청년 토비야는 천사와 함께 집을 나섰다. 그 집 개도 청년을 따라 집을 나서서 그들과 함께 떠났다. 그 두 사람은 길을 가다가 첫째 날 밤이 되자, 티그리스 강 가에서 야영하기로 하였다.

Now when the boy went down to wash his feet in the river, a large fish suddenly leaped out of the water and tried to swallow his foot. He shouted in alarm.

▶ 청년은 발을 씻으려고 티그리스 강으로 내려갔다. 그때에 커다란 물고기가 물에서 뛰어올라 청년의 발을 삼키려고 하였다. 청년이 소리를 지르자,

But the angel said to him, "Take hold of the fish and don't let it get away!" The boy seized the fish and hauled it up on the shore.

▶ 천사가 그에게 “그 물고기를 붙잡고 놓치지 마시오.” 하고 말하였다. 청년은 물고기를 붙들어 뭍으로 가지고 올라왔다.

The angel then told him: "Cut the fish open and take out its gall, heart, and liver, and keep them with you; but throw away the entrails. Its gall, heart, and liver make useful medicines."

▶ 그러자 천사가 말하였다. “물고기의 배를 갈라 쓸개와 염통과 간을 빼내어 잘 간수하고 내장은 버리시오. 그 쓸개와 염통과 간은 효험이 좋은 약이라오.”

After the lad had cut the fish open, he put aside the gall, heart, and liver. Then he broiled and ate part of the fish; the rest he salted and kept for the journey.

▶ 청년은 물고기의 배를 갈라 쓸개와 염통과 간을 따로 모아 놓고 나서, 고기의 일부는 구워 먹고 나머지는 소금에 절여 두었다. 그 두 사람은 함께 길을 걸어 마침내 메디아에 가까이 이르렀다.

Afterward they traveled on together till they were near Media. The boy asked the angel this question: "Brother Azariah, what medicinal value is there in the fish's heart, liver, and gall?"

▶ 그때에 청년이 천사에게 “아자르야 형제, 그 물고기의 염통과 간, 그리고 쓸개가 도대체 무슨 약이 된다는 말이오?” 하고 묻자,

He answered: "As regards the fish's heart and liver, if you burn them so that the smoke surrounds a man or a woman who is afflicted by a demon or evil spirit, the affliction will leave him completely, and no demons will ever return to him again.

▶ 천사가 이렇게 대답하였다. “그 물고기의 염통과 간은 마귀나 악령에 시달리는 남자나 여자 앞에서 태워 연기를 피우면, 그 시달림이 깨끗이 사라져서 더 이상 남아 있지 않게 된다오.

And as for the gall, if you rub it on the eyes of a man who has cataracts, blowing into his eyes right on the cataracts, his sight will be restored."

Raphael said to the boy, "Brother Tobiah!" He answered, "Yes, what is it?" Raphael continued: "Tonight we must stay with Raguel, who is a relative of yours. He has a daughter named Sarah,

▶ 라파엘이 “토비야 형제!” 하고 청년을 부르자 그가 “왜 그러시오?” 하고 대답하였다. 라파엘이 말하였다. “우리는 오늘 밤을 라구엘의 집에서 묵어야 하는데, 그 사람은 그대의 친족이오. 그리고 그에게는 사라라는 딸이 있소.

but no other child. Since you are Sarah's closest relative, you before all other men have the right to marry her. Also, her father's estate is rightfully yours to inherit. Now the girl is sensible, courageous, and very beautiful; and her father loves her dearly."

▶ 이 사라 말고는 그에게 아들도 없고 딸도 없소. 그대는 사라의 가장 가까운 친척이니 만큼 다른 모든 사람에 앞서 그 여자를 차지할 자격이 있고, 그 아버지의 재산도 물려받을 권리가 있소. 그 처녀는 현명하고 용감하며 대단히 아름답소. 그 아버지도 훌륭한 분이오.”

He continued: "Since you have the right to marry her, listen to me, brother. Tonight I will ask the girl's father to let us have her as your bride. When we return from Rages, we will hold the wedding feast for her. I know that Raguel cannot keep her from you or let her become engaged to another man; that would be a capital crime according to the decree in the Book of Moses, and he knows that it is your right, before all other men, to marry his daughter. So heed my words, brother; tonight we must speak for the girl, so that we may have her engaged to you. And when we return from Rages, we will take her and bring her back with us to your house."

▶ 라파엘이 계속 말하였다. “그대는 사라를 아내로 맞아들일 권리가 있소. 그러니 형제여, 내 말을 들으시오. 사라를 그대의 신부로 맞아들일 수 있도록, 내가 오늘 밤에 그 처녀의 일을 그 아버지와 상의하겠소. 우리가 라게스에서 돌아오는 대로 혼인식을 올립시다. 라구엘이 사라를 그대에게 주기를 마다하거나 결코 다른 남자와 약혼시킬 수 없다는 사실을 나는 잘 알고 있소. 만일 그러했다가는 모세의 책에 있는 법령에 따라 사형을 당할 것이오. 사실 라구엘도 그대가 다른 모든 사람에 앞서 자기 딸을 아내로 맞아들일 권리가 있다는 것을 알고 있소. 그러니 이제 형제여, 내 말을 들으시오. 오늘 밤에 그 처녀의 일을 상의하여 그대와 그 처녀의 약혼식을 올리도록 합시다. 그리고 우리가 라게스에서 돌아오면, 그 여자를 그대의 집으로 데려갑시다.”

Tobiah objected, however: "Brother Azariah, I have heard that this woman has already been married seven times, and that her husbands died in their bridal chambers. On the very night they approached her, they dropped dead. And I have heard it said that it was a demon who killed them.

▶ 그때에 토비야가 라파엘에게 대답하였다. “아자르야 형제, 내가 듣기로 그 여자는 이미 일곱 남자와 혼인하였는데 그들이 다 신방에서 죽었소. 그들이 그 여자 방으로 들어가기만 하면 그 밤으로 죽는 것이오. 그리고 마귀가 그들을 죽였다는 말도 들었소.

So now I too am afraid of this demon. Because he loves her, he does not harm her; but he does slay any man who wishes to come close to her. I am my father's only child. If I should die, I would bring my father and mother down to their grave in sorrow over me. And they have no other son to bury them!"

▶ 마귀가 그 여자는 해치지 않고 그에게 다가가려는 남자만 죽이는 것이오. 그러니 아버지께는 자식이 나밖에 없는데 내가 죽어서, 아버지와 어머니가 나 때문에 괴로워하며 무덤으로 내려가시게 되지나 않을까 두렵소. 게다가 그분들을 묻어 드릴 다른 아들도 없소.”

Raphael said to him: "Do you not remember your father's orders? He commanded you to marry a woman from your own family. So now listen to me, brother; do not give another thought to this demon, but marry Sarah. I know that tonight you shall have her for your wife!

▶ 그러나 라파엘은 이렇게 말하였다. “그대의 아버지께서 당신의 집안에서 아내를 맞아들이라고 그대에게 분부하셨는데, 그대는 아버지의 그 분부를 기억하고 있지 않소? 그러니 이제 형제여, 내 말을 들으시오. 마귀는 걱정하지 말고 그 여자를 아내로 맞아들이시오. 나는 그 여자가 오늘 밤으로 그대의 아내가 되리라는 것을 알고 있소.

When you go into the bridal chamber, take the fish's liver and heart, and place them on the embers for the incense.
|

▶ 그대가 신방에 들어가면 그 물고기의 간과 염통을 조금 꺼내어 향의 잿불에다가 올려놓으시오. 그러면 냄새가 퍼질 것이오.

As soon as the demon smells the odor they give off, he will flee and never again show himself near her. Then when you are about to have intercourse with her, both of you first rise up to pray. Beg the Lord of heaven to show you mercy and grant you deliverance. But do not be afraid, for she was set apart for you before the world existed. You will save her, and she will go with you. And I suppose that you will have children by her, who will take the place of brothers for you. So do not worry." When Tobiah heard Raphael say that she was his kinswoman, of his own family's lineage, he fell deeply in love with her, and his heart became set on her.

▶ 마귀는 그 냄새를 맡고 달아나서 다시는 결코 그 여자 곁에 나타나지 않을 것이오. 그리고 그대는 그 여자와 동침하려고 할 때, 먼저 둘이서 함께 일어나 하늘의 주님께 기도하며 그대들에게 자비와 구원을 베풀어 주십사고 간청하시오. 두려워하지 마시오. 그 여자는 세상이 생기기 전부터 그대의 아내로 정해졌소. 그대가 이렇게 그 여자를 구해 내면 그 여자는 그대를 따라나설 것이오. 그대가 그 여자에게서 자녀들을 얻고 그들이 그대에게 동기들처럼 되리라고 나는 생각하오. 그러니 걱정하지 마시오.” 토비야는 라파엘의 말을 듣고 사라가 자기 아버지 집안의 후손으로 자기에게 친족 누이가 된다는 것을 알자, 그 여자를 매우 사랑하게 되고 그 여자에게 마음이 끌리게 되었다.
