The LORD showed me two baskets of figs placed before the temple of the LORD. - This was after Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, had exiled from Jerusalem Jeconiah, son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and the princes of Judah, the artisans and the skilled workers, and brought them to Babylon.

▶ 주님께서 나에게 주님의 성전 앞에 놓인 무화과 두 광주리를 보여 주셨다. 그것은 바빌론 임금 네부카드네자르가 유다 임금 여호야킴의 아들 여콘야와 유다의 제후들과 장인들과 대장장이들을 예루살렘에서 바빌론으로 끌고 간 뒤였다.

One basket contained excellent figs, the early-ripening kind. But the other basket contained very bad figs, so bad they could not be eaten.

▶ 한 광주리에는 맏물 무화과처럼 매우 좋은 무화과가 담겨 있었으나, 다른 광주리에는 너무 나빠 먹을 수 없는 매우 나쁜 무화과가 담겨 있었다.

Then the LORD said to me: What do you see, Jeremiah? "Figs," I replied; "the good ones are very good, but the bad ones very bad, so bad they cannot be eaten."

▶ 주님께서 나에게 말씀하셨다. “예레미야야, 무엇이 보이느냐?” 내가 대답하였다. “무화과입니다. 좋은 무화과는 매우 좋은 것이고, 나쁜 무화과는 너무 나빠 먹을 수 없는 것입니다.”

Thereupon this word of the LORD came to me:

▶ 그러자 주님의 말씀이 나에게 내렸다.

Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Like these good figs, even so will I regard with favor Judah's exiles whom I sent away from this place into the land of the Chaldeans.

▶ 주 이스라엘의 하느님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. “내가 이곳에서 칼데아인들의 땅으로 내쫓은 유다의 유배자들을 이 좋은 무화과처럼 좋게 보아 주겠다.

I will look after them for their good, and bring them back to this land, to build them up, not to tear them down; to plant them, not to pluck them out.

▶ 나는 그들이 잘되게 눈길을 주고, 그들을 이 땅으로 돌아오게 하겠다. 내가 그들을 세우고, 부수지 않겠으며, 그들을 심고, 뽑지 않겠다.

I will give them a heart with which to understand that I am the LORD. They shall be my people and I will be their God, for they shall return to me with their whole heart.

▶ 나는 그들에게 내가 주님임을 알아보는 마음을 주겠다. 그리하여 그들은 내 백성이 되고, 나는 그들의 하느님이 될 것이다. 그들이 온전한 마음으로 나에게 돌아올 것이기 때문이다.

And like the figs that are bad, so bad they cannot be eaten - yes, thus says the LORD - even so will I treat Zedekiah, king of Judah, and his princes, the remnant of Jerusalem remaining in this land and those who have settled in the land of Egypt.

▶ ─ 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. ─ 그러나 유다 임금 치드키야와 그의 제후들, 이 땅에 남아 있는 예루살렘의 남은 자들과 이집트 땅에서 사는 자들은 너무 나빠 먹을 수 없는, 나쁜 무화과처럼 다루겠다.

I will make them an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth, a reproach and a byword, a taunt and a curse, in all the places to which I will drive them.

▶ 내가 그들을 세상의 모든 나라에 공포의 대상으로 만들고, 내가 그리로 몰아낸 모든 곳에서 수치와 속담 거리와 비웃음 거리와 저주의 대상이 되게 하겠다.

I will send upon them the sword, famine, and pestilence, until they have disappeared from the land which I gave them and their fathers.

▶ 또한 그들에게 칼과 굶주림과 흑사병을 보내어, 내가 그들과 그 조상들에게 준 땅에서 그들을 완전히 멸망시키겠다.”
