<잔잔하고 나지막한 사랑의 목소리>

The Still, Small Voice of Love

관심을 끌려는 목소리가 많이 있습니다.  “당신이 좋은 사람임을 보이세요”라는 목소리가 있고 “당신 스스로 부끄러워하는 게 낫겠어요”라는 목소리도 있습니다.  또한 “짜장 당신을 걱정하는 이는 아무도 없어요”라는 목소리가 있는가 하면 “꼭 성공하고 이름도 날리며 권력을 잡으세요”라는 목소리도 있습니다.  그러나 이 모든 아주 왁자지껄한 목소리 밑에는 "당신은 내가 사랑하는 이요 내 마음에 드는 이다.”라는 잔잔하고 나지막한 목소리가 있습니다. 이것이 바로 그 무엇보다 먼저 들어야 하는 목소리입니다. 하지만 그 목소리를 들으려면 고독과 침묵 그리고 목소리에 귀를 기울이겠다는 굳은 결심 등 남다른 노력을 기울어야 합니다.

기도의 알짬이 바로 이겁니다. 우리를 “내가 사랑하는 이”라고 부르시는 목소리에 귀를 기울이는 겁니다.

Many voices ask for our attention. There is a voice that says, “Prove that you are a good person.” Another voice says, “You’d better be ashamed of yourself.” There also is a voice that says, “Nobody really cares about you,” and one that says, “Be sure to become successful, popular, and powerful.” But underneath all these often very noisy voices is a still, small voice that says, “You are my Beloved, my favor rests on you.” That’s the voice we need most of all to hear. To hear that voice, however, requires special effort; it requires solitude, silence, and a strong determination to listen.

That’s what prayer is. It is listening to the voice that calls us “my Beloved.”
