▶ At that time, when there was reading from the book of Moses in the hearing of the people, it was found written there that "no Ammonite or Moabite may ever be admitted into the assembly of God;

이는 그들이 양식과 물을 가지고 이스라엘 자손들을 맞아들이기는커녕, 그들을 저주하려고 발라암을 고용하였기 때문이라는 것이다. 그리고 우리 하느님께서 저주를 축복으로 바꾸어 주셨다는 것이다.

그는 토비야에게 큰 방을 차려 주었다. 그 방은 전에 곡식 제물과 유향과 기물들, 레위인들과 성가대와 문지기들을 위하여 지정된 십일조를 거두어들인 곡식과 햇포도주와 햇기름, 그리고 사제들을 위한 예물을 두는 곳이었다.

▶ and returned to Jerusalem, where I discovered the evil thing that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in setting aside for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.

나는 몹시 화가 나서 토비야의 집 세간을 모두 방 밖으로 내던지고,

▶ This displeased me very much, and I had all of Tobiah's household goods thrown outside the chamber.

방들을 정결하게 하라고 지시하였다. 그런 다음에 하느님의 집 기물들과 곡식 제물과 향료를 도로 가져다 두게 하였다.

|
▶ Then I gave orders to purify the chambers, and I had them replace there the utensils of the house of God, the cereal offerings, and the incense.

나는 또 레위인들의 몫이 분배되고 있지 않음을 알게 되었다. 그래서 맡은 일을 해야 할 레위인들과 성가대는 저마다 제 밭이 있는 곳으로 달아나 버렸다.

▶ I learned, too, that the portions due the Levites were no longer being given, so that the Levites and the singers who should have been carrying out the services had deserted, each man to his own field.

나는 “어쩌자고 우리 하느님의 집을 이렇게 버려두었소?” 하며 관리들을 꾸짖고서는, 레위인들과 성가대를 다시 불러 모아 제자리에 세웠다.

▶ I took the magistrates to task, demanding, "Why is the house of God abandoned?" Then I brought the Levites together and had them resume their stations.

그러자 모든 유다인이 곡식과 햇포도주와 햇기름의 십일조를 창고로 가져왔다.

▶ All Judah once more brought in the tithes of grain, wine, and oil to the storerooms;
|
|

|
나는 셀레므야 사제와 차독 서기관과 레위인 프다야를 창고 책임자로, 그리고 마탄야의 손자이며 자쿠르의 아들인 하난을 조수로 임명하였다. 그들은 진실한 사람으로 인정받고 있었다. 그래서 동료들에게 몫을 분배하는 일을 그들에게 맡긴 것이다.

▶ and in charge of the storerooms I appointed the priest Shelemiah, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah, one of the Levites, together with Hanan, son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, as their assistant; for these men were held to be trustworthy. It was their duty to make the distribution to their brethren.

“저의 하느님, 이 일을 한 저를 기억해 주십시오. 제 하느님의 집과 그분 섬기는 일을 위하여 제가 한 이 덕행을 지워 버리지 말아 주십시오.”

▶ Remember this to my credit, O my God! Let not the devotion which I showed for the house of my God and its services be forgotten!

|
그때에 나는 유다 지방에서 사람들이 안식일에도 술틀을 밟고 곡식 더미를 날라다가 나귀에 실으며, 안식일인데도 포도주와 포도송이와 무화과와 그 밖의 온갖 짐을 예루살렘으로 들여오는 것을 보았다. 그리하여 나는 안식일에 식품을 팔지 말라고 경고하였다.

▶ In those days I perceived that men in Judah were treading the winepresses on the sabbath; that they were bringing in sheaves of grain, loading them on their asses, together with wine, grapes, figs, and every other kind of burden, and bringing them to Jerusalem on the sabbath day. I warned them to sell none of these victuals.

예루살렘에 사는 티로인들도 물고기와 온갖 상품을 가져다가, 안식일에 예루살렘에서 유다의 자손들에게 팔았다.

▶ In Jerusalem itself the Tyrians who were resident there were importing fish and every other kind of merchandise and selling it to the Judahites on the sabbath.

그래서 나는 유다의 귀족들을 꾸짖으며 말하였다. “여러분은 어쩌자고 안식일을 더럽히며 이런 악한 일을 저지르고 있소?

▶ I took the nobles of Judah to task, demanding of them: "What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the sabbath day?

여러분의 조상들이 그렇게 하였기 때문에, 우리 하느님께서 우리와 이 도성에 이 모든 재앙을 내리신 게 아니오? 여러분까지 안식일을 더럽혀, 이스라엘에 하느님의 진노를 더 많이 끌어들이고 있소.”

▶ Did not your fathers act in this same way, with the result that our God has brought all this evil upon us and upon this city? Would you add to the wrath against Israel by once more profaning the sabbath?"

안식일이 되기 전 예루살렘의 성문들에 그림자가 드리우자, 나는 문들을 닫도록 지시하고, 또 안식일이 지날 때까지 열지 못하도록 지시하였다. 그러고서는 내 부하들 가운데 몇을 성문마다 세워, 안식일에 짐이 들어오지 못하게 하였다.

▶ When the shadows were falling on the gates of Jerusalem before the sabbath, I ordered the doors to be closed and forbade them to be reopened till after the sabbath. I posted some of my own men at the gates so that no burden might enter on the sabbath day.

그 뒤에도 상인들과 갖가지 물건을 파는 자들이 예루살렘 성 밖에서 밤을 지내는 일이 한두 번 있었다.

▶ The merchants and sellers of various kinds of merchandise spent the night once or twice outside Jerusalem,

그래서 나는 그들에게 경고하며 말하였다. “그대들은 어찌하여 성 앞에서 밤을 지내오? 다시 또 그런다면, 내가 그대들에게 손을 댈 것이오.” 그때부터 그들은 안식일에 나타나지 않았다.

▶ but then I warned them, saying to them: "Why do you spend the night alongside the wall? If you keep this up, I will lay hands on you!" From that time on, they did not return on the sabbath.

나는 레위인들에게 자신들을 정결하게 하고 와서 성문들을 지켜, 안식일을 거룩하게 지내라고 지시하였다. “저의 하느님, 이것도 저를 위하여 기억해 주십시오. 당신의 크신 자애로 저를 가엾이 여겨 주십시오.”

▶ Then I ordered the Levites to purify themselves and to go and watch the gates, so that the sabbath day might be kept holy. This, too, remember in my favor, O my God, and have mercy on me in accordance with your great mercy!

▶ Also in those days I saw Jews who had married Ashdodite, Ammonite, or Moabite wives.

▶ Of their children, half spoke Ashdodite, and none of them knew how to speak Jewish; and so it was in regard to the languages of the various other peoples.

나는 그들을 꾸짖고 저주하였으며, 그 사람들 가운데 몇몇을 때리기도 하고 머리털을 뽑기도 하였다. 그러고 나서 하느님을 두고 맹세하게 하였다. “당신들은 이방인의 아들에게 딸을 주어서는 안 되오. 그들의 딸을 아들이나 자기의 아내로 데려와서도 안 되오.

▶ I took them to task and cursed them; I had some of them beaten and their hair pulled out; and I adjured them by God: "You shall not marry your daughters to their sons nor take any of their daughters for your sons or for yourselves!

|
이스라엘 임금 솔로몬이 죄를 지은 것도 바로 그런 여자들 때문이 아니오? 수많은 민족들 가운데 그만한 임금이 없었소. 그는 자기의 하느님께 사랑을 받았고, 하느님께서는 그를 온 이스라엘의 임금으로 세우셨소. 그러한 그를 이민족 여자들이 죄짓게 한 것이오.

▶ Did not Solomon, the king of Israel, sin because of them? Though among the many nations there was no king like him, and though he was beloved of his God and God had made him king over all Israel, yet even he was made to sin by foreign women.

그런데 우리도 당신네 말을 듣고, 이민족 여자들과 혼인하여 이렇게 큰 악을 저지르며 우리 하느님을 배신하라는 말이오?”

▶ Must it also be heard of you that you have done this same very great evil, betraying our God by marrying foreign women?"

|
엘야십 대사제의 아들 요야다의 아들들 가운데 하나가 호론 사람 산발랏의 사위였다. 그래서 나는 그를 내게서 멀리 쫓아 버렸다.

▶ One of the sons of Joiada, son of Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite! I drove him from my presence.

“저의 하느님, 사제직뿐만 아니라 사제들과 레위인들의 계약을 더럽힌 저들을 기억하십시오.”

▶ Remember against them, O my God, how they defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites!

|
나는 이렇게 사제들과 레위인들을 모든 낯선 것으로부터 정결하게 한 다음, 임무를 확정하여 저마다 제 일을 하게 하였다.

▶ Thus I cleansed them of all foreign contamination. I established the various functions for the priests and Levites, so that each had his appointed task.

또 정해진 때에 바치는 장작의 봉헌과 맏물도 확정하였다. “저의 하느님, 저를 좋게 기억해 주십시오.”

▶ I also provided for the procurement of wood at stated times and for the first fruits. Remember this in my favor, O my God!
