홀로페르네스가 유딧에게 말하였다. “여인아, 용기를 내어라. 마음속으로 두려워하지 마라. 나는 온 세상의 임금 네부카드네자르 님을 섬기기로 작정한 사람은 아무도 해친 적이 없다.

▶ Then Holofernes said to her: "Take courage, lady; have no fear in your heart! Never have I harmed anyone who chose to serve Nebuchadnezzar, king of all the earth.

이번에도 저 산악 지방에 사는 너의 백성이 나를 멸시하지 않았으면, 그들에게 창을 겨누지 않았을 것이다. 그러나 그들 스스로 이렇게 하도록 만들었다.

▶ Nor would I have raised my spear against your people who dwell in the mountain region, had they not despised me and brought this upon themselves.

그러면 이제 네가 무엇 때문에 그들에게서 도망쳐 나와 우리에게 왔는지 말해 보아라. 아무튼 너는 안전한 곳을 찾아 이리 온 것이다. 용기를 내어라. 오늘 밤은 물론 앞으로도 너는 안전하다.

▶ But now tell me why you fled from them and came to us. In any case, you have come to safety. Take courage! Your life is spared tonight and for the future.

너에게 해를 끼칠 자 하나도 없다. 오히려 나의 주군이신 네부카드네자르 임금님의 종들에게 하듯, 너에게도 모두 잘해 줄 것이다.”

▶ No one at all will harm you. Rather, you will be well treated, as are all the servants of my lord, King Nebuchadnezzar."

유딧이 그에게 대답하였다. “이 여종의 말씀을 받아 주시고, 이 하녀가 주인님 앞에서 말씀드리는 것을 허락해 주십시오. 저는 오늘 밤 저의 주인님께 거짓은 하나도 아뢰지 않겠습니다.

▶ Judith answered him: "Listen to the words of your servant, and let your handmaid speak in your presence! I will tell no lie to my lord this night,

이 하녀의 말씀대로만 하시면 하느님께서는 주인님의 일을 완전히 이루어 주실 것입니다. 그리하여 주인님께서는 계획하신 일에서 하나도 실패하지 않으실 것입니다.

▶ and if you follow out the words of your handmaid, God will give you complete success, and my lord will not fail in any of his undertakings.

|
온 세상의 임금이신 네부카드네자르 님의 목숨을 걸고, 또 모든 생물을 관장하라고 주인님을 파견하신 그분의 능력을 걸고 말씀 올립니다. 주인님 덕분에, 사람들만 그분을 섬기는 것이 아닙니다. 들짐승과 집짐승과 하늘의 새들까지 주인님의 힘 덕분에 네부카드네자르 님과 그분의 온 집안 밑에서 살아가게 될 것입니다.

▶ By the life of Nebuchadnezzar, king of all the earth, and by the power of him who has sent you to set all creatures aright! not only do men serve him through you; but even the wild beasts and the cattle and the birds of the air, because of your strength, will live for Nebuchadnezzar and his whole house.

저희는 주인님께서 가지신 지혜와 주인님의 영이 지니신 수완에 관해서 잘 들었습니다. 그리고 온 나라에서 주인님 홀로 훌륭하시고 식견이 출중하실뿐더러 전술에도 뛰어나시다는 것을 온 세상이 잘 알고 있습니다.

▶ Indeed, we have heard of your wisdom and sagacity, and all the world is aware that throughout the kingdom you alone are competent, rich in experience, and distinguished in military strategy.

|
주인님께서 소집하신 회의에서 아키오르가 한 말을 저희도 들었습니다. 배툴리아의 남자들이 그의 목숨을 살려 주자, 자기가 주인님 곁에서 지껄인 말을 모두 그들에게 들려준 것입니다.

▶ "As for Achior's speech in your council, we have heard of it. When the men of Bethulia spared him, he told them all he had said to you.

그러니 저의 상전이신 주인님! 그의 말을 그냥 넘겨 버리지 마십시오. 그의 말은 참말이니 마음에 새겨 두십시오. 사실 저희 겨레는 하느님께 죄를 짓지 않는 한, 징벌을 당하지도 않고 칼에 압도되지도 않습니다.

▶ So then, my lord and master, do not disregard his word, but bear it in mind, for it is true. For our people are not punished, nor does the sword prevail against them, except when they sin against their God.

|
그러나 그들이 옳지 않은 일을 할 때마다 하느님을 노엽게 하며 짓는 죄가 그들을 덮칠 것입니다. 그리하여 주인님께서는 좌절하거나 실패하지 않으실 것입니다. 그리고 그들에게는 죽음이 들이닥칠 것입니다.

▶ But now their guilt has caught up with them, by which they bring the wrath of their God upon them whenever they do wrong; so that my lord will not be repulsed and fail, but death will overtake them.

그들은 양식이 떨어지고 물도 거의 다 바닥났기 때문에, 집짐승들에게 손을 대려고 하였을 뿐만 아니라, 하느님께서 먹지 말라고 법으로 금지하신 것들까지 모두 먹기로 계획하였습니다.

▶ Since their food gave out and all their water ran low, they decided to kill their animals, and determined to consume all the things which God in his laws forbade them to eat.

그뿐 아니라 하느님께 봉헌한 다음 예루살렘에서, 곧 저희 하느님 앞에서 봉직하는 사제들을 위하여 떼어 놓은 곡식의 맏물과 포도주와 올리브 기름의 십일조로서, 일반 백성은 그 누구도 손으로 만지는 것조차 허락되지 않은 것들을 먹기로 결심하였습니다.

▶ They decreed that they would use up the first fruits of grain and the tithes of wine and oil which they had sanctified and reserved for the priests who minister in the presence of our God in Jerusalem: things which no layman should even touch with his hands.

그들은 또 예루살렘 주민들도 그러한 짓을 하고 있기 때문에, 원로단의 허락을 받아 오라고 사람들을 그리로 보냈습니다.

▶ They have sent messengers to Jerusalem to bring back to them authorization from the council of the elders; for the inhabitants there have also done these things.

▶ On the very day when the response reaches them and they act upon it, they will be handed over to you for destruction.

이 여종은 이 모든 것을 알았기 때문에 그들에게서 도망쳐 나왔습니다. 온 세상 사람들이 듣기만 하여도 깜짝 놀랄 일을 주인님과 함께 하도록 하느님께서 저를 보내신 것입니다.

▶ "As soon as I, your handmaid, learned all this, I fled from them. God has sent me to perform with you such deeds that people throughout the world will be astonished on hearing of them.

|
이 여종은 신심이 깊은 사람으로서, 밤이나 낮이나 하늘의 하느님께 예배합니다. 이제 저의 주인님, 저는 주인님 곁에 머무르겠습니다. 다만 밤에는 이 여종이 골짜기로 나가서 하느님께 기도하겠습니다. 그들이 언제 그 죄를 저지를지 그때에 하느님께서 저에게 말씀해 주실 것입니다.

▶ Your handmaid is, indeed, a God-fearing woman, serving the God of heaven night and day. Now I will remain with you, my lord; but each night your handmaid will go out to the ravine and pray to God. He will tell me when the Israelites have committed their crimes.

그러면 제가 와서 알려 드릴 터이니 온 군대를 이끌고 나가십시오. 그들 가운데에서 주인님께 맞설 자 하나도 없을 것입니다.

▶ Then I will come and let you know, so that you may go out with your whole force, and not one of them will be able to withstand you.

|
주인님께서 유다 한복판을 지나 예루살렘 앞에 다다를 때까지 제가 인도하겠습니다. 그리고 예루살렘 한가운데에 주인님께서 앉으실 옥좌를 마련하겠습니다. 그러면 주인님께서는 그들을 목자 없는 양들처럼 몰게 되시고, 주인님 앞에서는 개조차 짖지 않을 것입니다. 이는 하느님께서 저의 선견을 통하여 저에게 말씀하시고 알려 주신 것으로서, 저는 이를 주인님께 알려 드리라고 보내졌습니다.”

▶ I will lead you through Judea, till you come to Jerusalem, and there I will set up your judgment seat. You will drive them like sheep that have no shepherd, and not even a dog will growl at you. This was told me, and announced to me in advance, and I in turn have been sent to tell you."

유딧의 말이 홀로페르네스와 그의 모든 시종의 마음에 들었다. 그들은 그의 지혜에 경탄하면서 말하였다.

▶ Her words pleased Holofernes and all his servants; they marveled at her wisdom and exclaimed,

그때에 홀로페르네스가 유딧에게 말하였다. “우리의 손에는 힘을 주시고 나의 주군을 멸시하는 자들에게는 멸망을 가져다주시려고 너를 저 백성보다 먼저 보내셨으니, 하느님께서는 참 잘하셨다.

▶ Then Holofernes said to her: "God has done well in sending you ahead of your people, to bring victory to our arms, and destruction to those who have despised my lord.

|
너는 용모가 아리따울 뿐만 아니라 말도 훌륭히 잘하는구나. 네가 말한 대로 하면, 너의 하느님은 나의 하느님이 되시고, 또 너는 네부카드네자르 임금님의 왕궁에 살면서 온 세상에 명성을 떨치게 될 것이다.”

▶ You are fair to behold, and your words are well spoken. If you do as you have said, your God will be my God; you shall dwell in the palace of King Nebuchadnezzar, and shall be renowned throughout the earth."
