그런데 어떻게 하여 저자가 하느님의 아들 가운데 들고 거룩한 이들과 함께 제 몫을 차지하게 되었는가?

▶ See how he is accounted among the sons of God; how his lot is with the saints!

그렇다면 우리가 진리의 길을 벗어났고 정의의 빛이 우리를 비추지 않았으며 해가 우리 위로 떠오르지 않은 것이다.

▶ We, then, have strayed from the way of truth, and the light of justice did not shine for us, and the sun did not rise for us.

우리는 불법과 파멸의 엉겅퀴에 말려든 채 인적 없는 광야를 걸어가며 주님의 길을 알지 못하였다.

▶ We had our fill of the ways of mischief and of ruin; we journeyed through impassable deserts, but the way of the LORD we knew not.

그것은 배가 높은 물결을 헤치고 갈 때와 같다. 한번 지나가면 자취를 찾을 수 없고 파도 속에 용골이 지난 흔적도 없다.

▶ Like a ship traversing the heaving water, of which, when it has passed, no trace can be found, no path of its keel in the waves.

또 새가 창공을 날아갈 때와 같다. 그것이 지나간 자리는 다시 찾을 수 없다. 새는 깃으로 가벼운 공기를 치고 그것을 가르며 세차게 날아올라 날갯짓으로 떠가지만 그 뒤에는 날아간 형적을 공기 중에서 찾을 수 없다.

▶ Or like a bird flying through the air; no evidence of its course is to be found - But the fluid air, lashed by the beat of pinions, and cleft by the rushing force Of speeding wings, is traversed: and afterward no mark of passage can be found in it.

또 화살이 표적을 향하여 날아갈 때와 같다. 공기가 갈라졌다 곧바로 다시 합쳐져 날아간 길을 아무도 알지 못한다.

▶ Or as, when an arrow has been shot at a mark, the parted air straightway flows together again so that none discerns the way it went through -

우리도 이처럼 태어나자마자 사라져 버린 것. 남에게 보일 만한 덕의 형적조차 남기지 못하고 악으로 우리 자신을 소모하였을 뿐이다.”

▶ Even so we, once born, abruptly came to nought and held no sign of virtue to display, but were consumed in our wickedness."

악인의 희망은 바람에 날리는 검불 같고 태풍에 흩날리는 가벼운 거품 같다. 그것은 바람 앞의 연기처럼 흩어지고 단 하루 머물렀던 손님에 대한 기억처럼 흘러가 버린다.

▶ Yes, the hope of the wicked is like thistledown borne on the wind, and like fine, tempest-driven foam; Like smoke scattered by the wind, and like the passing memory of the nomad camping for a single day.

의인들이 받을 영광

그러나 의인들은 영원히 산다. 주님께서 그들에게 보상하시고 지극히 높으신 분께서 그들을 보살피신다.

▶ But the just live forever, and in the LORD is their recompense, and the thought of them is with the Most High.

그러므로 그들은 주님의 손에서 영화로운 왕관을 받고 아름다운 머리띠를 받을 것이다. 그분께서는 당신의 오른손으로 그들을 감싸 주시고 당신의 팔로 그들을 지켜 주실 것이다.

|
준엄한 진노를 갈아 칼로 만드실 것이다. 그러면 온 세상이 주님 편에 서서 미친 자들과 싸울 것이다.

▶ and whet his sudden anger for a sword, And the universe shall war with him against the foolhardy.

잘 겨냥된 번개가 화살처럼 날아가는데 잘 당긴 활에서 튀어 나가듯 표적을 향해 구름에서 튀어 나가고

|
▶ Well-aimed shafts of lightnings shall go forth and from the clouds as from a well-drawn bow shall leap to the mark;

분노에 찬 우박들이 투석기에서처럼 쏟아지며 바닷물이 그들을 향해 몰아치고 강물이 그들을 가차 없이 덮칠 것이다.

▶ and as from his sling, wrathful hailstones shall be hurled. The water of the sea shall be enraged against them and the streams shall abruptly overflow;

거센 바람이 불어 닥쳐 폭풍처럼 그들을 날려 버릴 것이다. 이처럼 불법 때문에 온 세상이 황폐해지고 악행 때문에 지배자들의 권좌가 뒤엎어질 것이다.

▶ A mighty wind shall confront them and a tempest winnow them out; Thus lawlessness shall lay the whole earth waste and evildoing overturn the thrones of potentates.
