돈을 꿀 때까지는 이웃의 손에 입 맞추고 그의 재산을 두고 공손한 어조로 말한다. 그러나 갚을 때가 되면 시간을 미루고 빈말로만 갚겠다 하며 시간만 탓할 뿐이다.

▶ When he borrows, he kisses the lender's hand and speaks with respect of his creditor's wealth; But when payment is due he disappoints him and says he is helpless to meet the claim.

그가 갚을 수 있다 하더라도 반이나마 받기 어렵고 그것이라도 받아 내면 횡재로 생각해야 하리라. 그가 갚을 수 없다면 재산을 빼앗긴 것이고 공연히 그를 원수로 만든 것이다. 빚진 자는 빚 준 이에게 저주와 욕설로 되갚고 존경 대신에 모욕으로 되갚으리라.

그렇지만 비천한 이에게는 참아 주고 자선을 베풀 때 그를 기다리게 하지 마라.

착한 사람은 이웃에게 보증을 서 주지만 수치심을 잃은 자는 그를 배반하리라.

보증인의 호의를 잊지 마라. 그는 너를 위해 자기 목숨을 내놓았다.

▶ Forget not the kindness of your backer, for he offers his very life for you.

|
죄인은 보증인의 재산을 날려 버리리라.

보증은 성공한 사람들을 수없이 망쳐 놓고 바다의 파도처럼 그들을 뒤흔들었다. 그것은 세도가들을 유배 가게 만들어 다른 민족들 가운데에서 방황하게 하였다.

잔치를 열어 주어도 감사를 받기는커녕 오히려 고약한 말을 듣게 되리라.

▶ The visitor has no thanks for filling the cups; besides, you will hear these bitter words:
