아, 사람들로 붐비던 도성이 외로이 앉아 있다. 뭇 나라 가운데에서 뛰어나던 도성이 과부처럼 되고 말았구나. 모든 지방의 여왕이 부역하는 신세가 되어 버렸구나.

밤이면 울고 또 울어 뺨 위에 눈물이 그치지 않는구나. 그 모든 애인들 가운데 위로해 줄 자 하나 없고 벗들은 모두 그를 배반하여 원수가 되었다.

▶ Bitterly she weeps at night, tears upon her cheeks, With not one to console her of all her dear ones; Her friends have all betrayed her and become her enemies.

유다는 고통과 고역 끝에 유배를 당하여 안식처를 얻지 못한 채 민족들 사이에 앉아 있다. 그를 뒤쫓는 자들이 모두 곤궁 속에 있는 그를 붙잡았다.

축제를 지내러 가는 이들이 없어 시온을 향한 길들은 비탄에 잠기고 성문들은 모두 황폐하게 되었으며 사제들은 탄식하고 처녀들은 슬픔에 젖어 있으니 시온도 쓰라려하는구나.

그의 적들은 우두머리가 되고 그의 원수들은 편안히 지내니 그의 많은 죄악 때문에 주님께서 그에게 고통을 내리신 것이다. 그의 아이들은 포로가 되어 적 앞으로 끌려갔다.

딸 시온에게서 그 모든 영화가 떠나가 버리고 고관들은 목초지를 찾지 못한 사슴들처럼 되어 뒤쫓는 자 앞에서 힘없이 걸어갔다.

예루살렘이 제 고통과 유랑의 세월을 회상한다, 예로부터 있어 왔던 그 온갖 소중한 것들도. 그의 백성이 적의 손에 떨어질 때 도와주는 이 하나 없이 적들만 그를 보며 그의 몰락을 비웃었다.

▶ Jerusalem is mindful of the days of her wretched homelessness, When her people fell into enemy hands, and she had no one to help her; When her foes gloated over her, laughed at her ruin.

예루살렘은 무거운 죄를 지어 혐옷거리가 되어 버렸다. 그 숭배자들이 그를 멸시하니 그의 치부를 보았음이라. 예루살렘 자신도 탄식하며 등을 돌려 버린다.

▶ Through the sin of which she is guilty, Jerusalem is defiled; All who esteemed her think her vile now that they see her nakedness; She herself groans and turns away.

부정이 옷자락에 묻어 있어도 제 종말을 생각하지 않더니 기막히게 몰락하였건만 위로해 주는 이 아무도 없다. "주님, 제 고통을 보소서, 원수가 의기양양해합니다."

▶ Her filth is on her skirt; she gave no thought how she would end. Astounding is her downfall, with no one to console her. Look, O LORD, upon her misery, for the enemy has triumphed!

예루살렘의 모든 보물에 적이 손을 뻗쳤습니다. 당신의 공동체에 들어오지 못하도록 명령하신 민족들이 성소로 쳐들어가는 것을 그는 보아야만 했습니다.

▶ The foe stretched out his hand to all her treasures; She has seen those nations enter her sanctuary Whom you forbade to come into your assembly.

그의 온 백성이 탄식하며 빵을 찾고 기운을 차리려고 보물을 먹을 것과 바꿉니다. “보소서, 주님, 살펴보소서, 제가 멸시만 당합니다.”

▶ All her people groan, searching for bread; They give their treasures for food, to retain the breath of life. "Look O LORD, and see how worthless I have become!

길을 지나가는 모든 이들이여 살펴보고 또 보시오. 당신의 격렬한 진노의 날에 주님께서 고통을 내리시어 내가 겪는 이 내 아픔 같은 것이 또 있는지.

▶ "Come, all you who pass by the way, look and see Whether there is any suffering like my suffering, which has been dealt me When the LORD afflicted me on the day of his blazing wrath.

그분께서는 높은 데에서 불을 보내시어 내 뼛속까지 꿰뚫게 하시고 내 발에 그물을 펼쳐 놓으셨다가 뒤에서 나를 낚아채셨다오. 그분께서 나를 황폐하게 하시어 이 몸은 온종일 괴로워한다오.

▶ "From on high he sent fire down into my very frame; He spread a net for my feet, and overthrew me. He left me desolate, in pain all the day.

그분의 손이 지우신 내 죄악의 멍에는 단단히 매여 있고 그것은 내 목 위에 올려져 있어 내 기력을 쇠잔케 한다오. 주님께서는 내가 대항할 수 없는 자들의 손에 나를 넘기셨다오.

▶ "He has kept watch over my sins; by his hand they have been plaited: They have settled about my neck, he has brought my strength to its knees; The Lord has delivered me into their grip, I am unable to rise.

주님께서는 나에게 속한 용사들을 모두 물리쳐 버리시고 내 젊은이들을 때려 부수시려 나를 거슬러 집회를 소집하셨다오. 주님께서는 포도 확을 밟듯 처녀 딸 유다를 짓밟으셨다오.

이 때문에 울지 않을 수 없어 내 눈은 눈물을 흘린다오. 나를 기운 차리게 해 주실 위로자께서 내게서 멀리 계시기 때문이라오. 원수가 기세를 떨쳐 내 아들들은 쇠멸해 간다오.

시온이 두 손을 내뻗었건만 위로해 줄 이 아무도 없다오. 주님께서 야곱을 거슬러 그의 적들을 그 둘레에 불러 모으시니 예루살렘은 그들 가운데에서 혐옷거리가 되어 버렸다오.

▶ Zion stretched out her hands, but there was no one to console her; The LORD gave orders against Jacob for his neighbors to be his foes; Jerusalem has become in their midst a thing unclean.

주님은 의로우신 분 내가 그분의 명령을 거역하였다오. 민족들이여, 모두 내 말을 들어 보오. 내 상처를 보아 주오. 내 처녀들과 총각들이 포로로 끌려갔다오.

나의 애인들을 불렀건만 그들은 나를 배신하였다오. 나의 사제들과 원로들은 기력을 되찾으려 먹을 것을 찾아다니다 도성 안에서 죽어 갔다오.

▶ "I cried out to my lovers, but they failed me. My priests and my elders perished in the city; Where they sought food for themselves, they found it not.

보소서, 주님, 곤경 속에 있는 저를. 제 속은 들끓고 제 마음은 안에서 뒤집히니 당신을 너무도 거역하였기 때문입니다. 밖에서는 칼이 자식들을 앗아 가고 집 안에는 죽음이 자리 잡고 있습니다.

그들은 제가 탄식하는 것을 듣건만 아무도 저를 위로해 주지 않습니다. 저의 모든 원수들이 제 불행을 듣고 당신께서 그렇게 하셨다고 기뻐합니다. 당신께서 선언하신 날이 오게 하소서. 그들도 저와 같이 되게 하소서.

저의 모든 죄악 때문에 당신께서 저에게 벌을 내리셨듯 저들의 모든 악행을 당신 앞에 펼치시어 저들에게도 벌을 내리소서. 정녕 저의 탄식은 끝이 없고 저의 마음은 너무나 괴롭습니다.
