침상에 누워 있을 때에 나는 머릿속에 떠오르는 환시를 보았다. 나무가 한 그루 보였다. 세상 한가운데에 자리 잡은 높이가 엄청난 나무였다.

▶ and cried out: " 'Cut down the tree and lop off its branches, strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit; let the beasts flee its shade, and the birds its branches.

그러나 뿌리등걸은 땅에 남겨 두어라. 쇠사슬과 청동 사슬로 묶어 들풀 사이에 남겨 두어라. 하늘에서 내리는 이슬에 젖은 채 땅의 잡초들 사이에서 짐승들과 운명을 함께하게 하여라.

▶ By decree of the sentinels is this decided, by order of the holy ones, this sentence; That all who live may know that the Most High rules over the kingdom of men: He can give it to whom he will, or set over it the lowliest of men.'

벨트사차르라는 이름을 가진 다니엘은 잠시 당황하였다. 임금의 생각들이 그를 놀라게 한 것이다. 그러자 임금이 말하였다. “벨트사차르야, 내 꿈과 그 뜻이 너를 놀라게 하지 않기를 바란다.” 그제야 벨트사차르가 대답하였다. “임금님, 그 꿈이 임금님의 원수들에게, 그 뜻이 임금님의 적들에게 해당되는 것이라면 얼마나 좋겠습니까?

그런데 임금님께서는 하늘에서 거룩한 감시자가 내려와 이렇게 말하는 것을 또 보셨습니다. ‘저 나무를 베어 없애 버려라. 그러나 뿌리등걸은 땅에 남겨 두어라. 쇠사슬과 청동 사슬로 묶어 들풀 사이에 남겨 두어라. 하늘에서 내리는 이슬에 젖은 채, 들짐승들과 운명을 함께하게 하여라. 일곱 해를 지낼 때까지 그렇게 하여라.’

또 그 나무의 뿌리등걸을 남겨 두라고 한 것은, 하늘이 세상을 다스림을 임금님께서 깨달으신 다음에야, 임금님의 나라가 임금님께 되돌려진다는 것을 뜻합니다.

▶ At once this was fulfilled. Nebuchadnezzar was cast out from among men, he ate grass like an ox, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven, until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle, and his nails like the claws of a bird.

기한이 찼을 때에 나 네부카드네자르는 눈을 들어 하늘을 바라보았다. 그때에 나는 정신을 되찾아, 가장 높으신 분께 영광을 드리고 영원히 살아 계신 분을 찬양하고 찬송하였다. 그분의 통치는 영원한 통치이고 그분의 나라는 대대로 이어지리라.

▶ When this period was over, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes to heaven; my reason was restored to me, and I blessed the Most High, I praised and glorified him who lives forever: His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures through all generations.

▶ At the same time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and my splendor returned to me. My nobles and lords sought me out; I was restored to my kingdom, and became much greater than before.

이제 나 네부카드네자르는 하늘의 임금님을 찬양하고 숭상하며 찬송한다. 그분께서 하시는 일은 모두 진실하고 그 길은 다 공정하니 그분께서는 교만 속에 걷는 자들을 낮추실 수 있는 분이시다.
