Now Jericho was in a state of siege because of the presence of the Israelites, so that no one left or entered.

Have all the soldiers circle the city, marching once around it. Do this for six days,

▶ 너희 군사들은 모두 저 성읍 둘레를 하루에 한 번 돌아라. 그렇게 엿새 동안 하는데,

with seven priests carrying ram's horns ahead of the ark. On the seventh day march around the city seven times, and have the priests blow the horns.

▶ 사제 일곱 명이 저마다 숫양 뿔 나팔을 하나씩 들고 궤 앞에 서라. 이렛날에는 사제들이 뿔 나팔을 부는 가운데 저 성읍을 일곱 번 돌아라.

When they give a long blast on the ram's horns and you hear that signal, all the people shall shout aloud. The wall of the city will collapse, and they will be able to make a frontal attack."

Summoning the priests, Joshua, son of Nun, then ordered them to take up the ark of the covenant with seven of the priests carrying ram's horns in front of the ark of the LORD.

▶ 눈의 아들 여호수아는 사제들을 불러 말하였다. “계약 궤를 메어라. 그리고 사제 일곱 명은 저마다 숫양 뿔 나팔을 하나씩 들고 주님의 궤 앞에 서라.”

And he ordered the people to proceed in a circle around the city, with the picked troops marching ahead of the ark of the LORD.

▶ 그는 이어서 백성에게 말하였다. “앞으로 나아가서 성읍을 돌아라. 무장을 갖춘 이들은 주님의 궤 앞에 서서 나아가라.”

At this order they proceeded, with the seven priests who carried the ram's horns before the LORD blowing their horns, and the ark of the covenant of the LORD following them.

In front of the priests with the horns marched the picked troops; the rear guard followed the ark, and the blowing of horns was kept up continually as they marched.

▶ 그리고 무장을 갖춘 이들이 뿔 나팔을 부는 사제들 앞에 서서 걸어가고 후위대가 궤 뒤를 따라가는데, 뿔 나팔 소리는 계속 울려 퍼졌다.

But the people had been commanded by Joshua not to shout or make any noise or outcry until he gave the word: only then were they to shout.

▶ 여호수아가 또 백성에게 명령하였다. “함성을 지르지 마라. 너희 소리가 들리지 않게 하여라. 한마디도 입 밖에 내지 마라. 내가 함성을 지르라고 하거든 그때에 함성을 질러라.”

So he had the ark of the LORD circle the city, going once around it, after which they returned to camp for the night.

▶ 이렇게 그는 주님의 궤가 성읍 둘레를 한 번 돌게 하였다. 백성은 그렇게 한 다음 진영으로 돌아가 그 밤을 진영에서 지냈다.

Early the next morning, Joshua had the priests take up the ark of the LORD.

The seven priests bearing the ram's horns marched in front of the ark of the LORD, blowing their horns. Ahead of these marched the picked troops, while the rear guard followed the ark of the LORD, and the blowing of horns was kept up continually.

▶ 숫양 뿔 나팔을 하나씩 든 사제 일곱 명이 주님의 궤 앞에 서서 가며 줄곧 나팔을 불었다. 그리고 무장을 갖춘 이들이 그들 앞에 서서 걸어가고 후위대가 주님의 궤 뒤를 따라가는데, 뿔 나팔 소리는 계속 울려 퍼졌다.

On this second day they again marched around the city once before returning to camp; and for six days in all they did the same.

On the seventh day, beginning at daybreak, they marched around the city seven times in the same manner; on that day only did they march around the city seven times.

The seventh time around, the priests blew the horns and Joshua said to the people, "Now shout, for the LORD has given you the city

and everything in it. It is under the LORD'S ban. Only the harlot Rahab and all who are in the house with her are to be spared, because she hid the messengers we sent.

▶ 성읍과 그 안에 있는 모든 것은 주님을 위한 완전 봉헌물이다. 다만 창녀 라합과 그 여자와 함께 집에 있는 사람은 모두 살려 주어라. 그 여자는 우리가 보낸 심부름꾼들을 숨겨 주었다.

But be careful not to take, in your greed, anything that is under the ban; else you will bring upon the camp of Israel this ban and the misery of it.

▶ 너희는 완전 봉헌물에 손을 대지 않도록 단단히 조심하여라. 탐을 내어 완전 봉헌물을 차지해서 이스라엘 진영까지 완전 봉헌물로 만들어 불행에 빠뜨리는 일이 없게 하여라.

All silver and gold, and the articles of bronze or iron, are sacred to the LORD. They shall be put in the treasury of the LORD."

▶ 은과 금, 청동 기물과 철 기물은 모두 주님께 성별된 것이므로, 주님의 창고로 들어가야 한다.”

As the horns blew, the people began to shout. When they heard the signal horn, they raised a tremendous shout. The wall collapsed, and the people stormed the city in a frontal attack and took it.

▶ 사제들이 뿔 나팔을 부니 백성이 함성을 질렀다. 백성은 뿔 나팔 소리를 듣자마자 큰 함성을 질렀다. 그때에 성벽이 무너져 내렸다. 백성은 저마다 성읍을 향하여 곧장 앞으로 올라가서 그 성읍을 함락하였다.

They observed the ban by putting to the sword all living creatures in the city: men and women, young and old, as well as oxen, sheep and asses.

Joshua directed the two men who had spied out the land, "Go into the harlot's house and bring out the woman with all her kin, as you swore to her you would do."

▶ 여호수아가 그 땅을 정탐하러 갔던 두 사람에게 말하였다. “그 창녀의 집으로 가서, 너희가 맹세한 대로 그 여자와 그에게 딸린 모든 이를 그곳에서 이끌고 나오너라.”

The spies entered and brought out Rahab, with her father, mother, brothers, and all her kin. Her entire family they led forth and placed them outside the camp of Israel.

▶ 그래서 정탐하러 갔던 젊은이들이 가서 라합과 그의 아버지와 어머니와 형제, 그리고 그에게 딸린 모든 이를 데리고 나왔다. 라합의 온 씨족을 이끌고 나와 이스라엘 진영 밖으로 데려다 놓았다.

The city itself they burned with all that was in it, except the silver, gold, and articles of bronze and iron, which were placed in the treasury of the house of the LORD.

Because Rahab the harlot had hidden the messengers whom Joshua had sent to reconnoiter Jericho, Joshua spared her with her family and all her kin, who continue in the midst of Israel to this day.

▶ 여호수아는 창녀 라합과 그의 아버지 집안과 그 여자에게 딸린 모든 이를 살려 주었다. 그래서 그 여자는 오늘날까지 이스라엘 백성 가운데에서 살고 있다. 예리코를 정탐하라고 여호수아가 보낸 심부름꾼들을 그 여자가 숨겨 주었기 때문이다.

On that occasion Joshua imposed the oath: Cursed before the LORD be the man who attempts to rebuild this city, Jericho. He shall lose his first-born when he lays its foundation, and he shall lose his youngest son when he sets up its gates.

Thus the LORD was with Joshua so that his fame spread throughout the land.
