David answered the priest: "The king gave me a commission and told me to let no one know anything about the business on which he sent me or the commission he gave me. For that reason I have arranged a meeting place with my men.

▶ 다윗이 아히멜렉 사제에게 대답하였다. “임금님께서 나에게 어떤 일을 맡기시면서, ‘내가 너에게 맡겨 보내는 이 일을 아무도 눈치채게 해서는 안 된다.’ 하고 당부하셨습니다. 그래서 제 부하들과 이곳 어느 지점에서 만나기로 약속해 놓은 것입니다.

Now what have you on hand? Give me five loaves, or whatever you can find."

▶ 그런데 지금 사제님 수중에 무엇이 좀 없습니까? 빵 다섯 덩이라도 좋습니다. 아니면 아무것이나 있는 대로 저에게 주십시오.”

But the priest replied to David, "I have no ordinary bread on hand, only holy bread; if the men have abstained from women, you may eat some of that."

▶ 사제가 다윗에게 대답하였다. “보통 빵은 내 수중에 없고, 있는 것이라고는 거룩한 빵뿐입니다. 부하들이 여자를 가까이하지 않았다면 드릴 수 있습니다.”

David answered the priest: "We have indeed been segregated from women as on previous occasions. Whenever I go on a journey, all the young men are consecrated - even for a secular journey. All the more so today, when they are consecrated at arms!"

▶ 다윗이 사제에게 응답하였다. “내가 출정할 때 늘 그렇게 하듯이 우리는 여자를 멀리하였습니다. 그러니 부하들의 몸도 깨끗합니다. 이번 경우가 보통 여행길이기는 하지만, 오늘은 그들 몸이 깨끗합니다.”

So the priest gave him holy bread, for no other bread was on hand except the showbread which had been removed from the LORD'S presence and replaced by fresh bread when it was taken away.

▶ 그제야 사제는 거룩한 빵을 다윗에게 주었다. 주님 앞에 바친 제사 빵 말고는 다른 빵이 없었기 때문이다. 그것은 마침 그날 주님 앞에서 물려 내고 따끈한 빵으로 바꾸면서 치워 놓은 것이었다.

One of Saul's servants was there that day, detained before the LORD; his name was Doeg the Edomite, and he was Saul's chief henchman.

David then asked Ahimelech: "Do you have a spear or a sword on hand? I brought along neither my sword nor my weapons, because the king's business was urgent."

▶ 다윗이 아히멜렉에게 물었다. “지금 혹시 사제님께 창이나 칼이 없으신지요? 임금님께서 맡기신 일이 너무 급해서 칼은 물론 다른 무기도 가져오지 못했습니다.”

The Sword of Goliath

The priest replied: "The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the Vale of the Terebinth, is here (wrapped in a mantle) behind an ephod. If you wish to take that, take it; there is no sword here except that one." David said: "There is none to match it. Give it to me!"

▶ 사제가 대답하였다. “장군께서 엘라 골짜기에서 쳐 죽인 필리스티아 사람 골리앗의 칼이 있습니다. 보자기에 싸서 에폿 뒤에 두었는데 그것이라도 가지려면 가지십시오. 이곳에 그것 말고 다른 무기라고는 없습니다.” 다윗이 말하였다. “그만 한 것이 어디 또 있겠습니까? 그것을 나에게 주십시오.”

That same day David took to flight from Saul, going to Achish, king of Gath.

But the servants of Achish said, "Is this not David, the king of the land? During their dances do they not sing, 'Saul has slain his thousands, but David his ten thousands'?"

▶ 아키스의 신하들이 그에게 말하였다. “이 사람은 그 나라 임금 다윗이 아닙니까? 그를 두고 사람들이 춤추며 이렇게들 노래하지 않았습니까? ‘사울은 수천을 치셨고 다윗은 수만을 치셨다네.’”

David took note of these remarks and became very much afraid of Achish, king of Gath.

So, as they watched, he feigned insanity and acted like a madman in their hands, drumming on the doors of the gate and drooling onto his beard.

▶ 사람들 앞에서 태도를 바꾸고 그들에게 둘러싸여 있는 동안 미친 척하였다. 그는 성 문짝에 무엇인가를 긁적거리기도 하고, 수염에 침을 흘리기도 하였다.

Finally Achish said to his servants: "You see the man is mad. Why did you bring him to me?

▶ 그러자 아키스가 신하들을 꾸짖었다. “미친 놈이 아니냐! 어쩌자고 저런 자를 나에게 끌어 왔느냐?

Do I not have enough madmen, that you bring in this one to carry on in my presence? Should this fellow come into my house?"

▶ 나에게 미친 놈들이 모자라서, 저런 자까지 데려다가 내 앞에서 미친 짓을 하게 하느냐? 그래 이런 자까지 내 집에 들어 와야 하겠느냐?”
