Then all the army leaders, Johanan, son of Kareah, Azariah, son of Hoshaiah, and all the people, high and low, approached the prophet Jeremiah

and said, "Grant our petition; pray for us to the LORD, your God, for all this remnant. We are now few who once were many, as you well see.

▶ 예레미야 예언자에게 와서 말하였다. “제발 당신에게 엎드려 간청하니, 우리 남은 자들 모두를 위하여 주 당신의 하느님께 기도하여 주십시오. 사실 우리는, 당신이 보시다시피, 많은 사람들 가운데 조금밖에 살아남지 않았습니다.

Let the LORD, your God, show us what way we should take and what we should do."

▶ 주 당신의 하느님께서 우리가 나아갈 길과 해야 할 일을 알려 주시도록 해 주십시오.”

|
Very well! the prophet Jeremiah answered them: I will pray to the LORD, your God, as you desire; whatever the LORD answers you, I will tell you; I will withhold nothing from you.

▶ 예레미야 예언자가 그들에게 말하였다. “잘 들었습니다. 이제 내가 여러분이 청한 대로 주 여러분의 하느님께 기도를 드리고, 주님께서 여러분에게 응답하신 것은 무엇이나 여러분에게 숨기지 않고 다 말하겠습니다.”

And they said to Jeremiah, "May the LORD be our witness: we will truly and faithfully follow all the instructions the LORD, your God, will send us.
|

▶ 그러자 그들도 예레미야에게 말하였다. “우리에 대하여 진실하고 성실하신 증인이신 주님을 두고 맹세합니다. 우리는 주 당신의 하느님께서 당신을 시켜 우리에게 내리신 모든 말씀을 그대로 실천하겠습니다.

Whether it is pleasant or difficult, we will obey the command of the LORD, our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it will go well with us for obeying the command of the LORD, our God."

▶ 우리는 당신을 주 우리 하느님께 보내 드리는데, 그분의 응답이 좋든지 나쁘든지 우리는 그분께 순종하겠습니다. 주 우리 하느님의 말씀을 들으면, 우리가 잘될 것입니다.”

Ten days passed before the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah.

Then he called Johanan, son of Kareah, his army leaders, and all the people, high and low,

and said to them: Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to offer your prayer:

If you remain quietly in this land I will build you up, and not tear you down; I will plant you, not uproot you; for I regret the evil I have done you.
|

▶ ‘너희가 이 땅에 그대로 머물러 살면, 내가 너희를 세우고, 부수지 않겠으며, 너희를 심고, 뽑지 않겠다. 내가 너희에게 내린 재앙을 후회하기 때문이다.

Do not fear the king of Babylon, before whom you are now afraid; do not fear him, says the LORD, for I am with you to save you, to rescue you from his power.

▶ 바빌론 임금을 너희가 두려워하는데 그를 두려워하지 마라. 내가 너희와 함께 있어 너희를 구원하고 너희를 그의 손에서 건져 낼 터이니, 그를 두려워하지 마라. 주님의 말씀이다.

I will grant you mercy, so that he will be sorry for you and let you return to your land.

▶ 내가 너희를 가엾이 여겨, 그를 시켜 너희에게 자비를 내려서 너희를 고향 땅으로 돌려보내게 하겠다.

|
But if you disobey the voice of the LORD, your God, and decide not to remain in this land,
|

▶ 그러나 너희가 주 너희 하느님의 말씀을 듣지 않고, ′저희는 이 땅에 살지 않겠습니다.′ 하고 말한다면,

|
saying, "No, we will go to Egypt, where we will see no more of war, hear the trumpet alarm no longer, nor hunger for bread; there we will live";

▶ 또한 ′저희는, 전쟁도 겪지 않고 나팔 소리도 듣지 않으며 양식이 떨어져 굶주리지도 않을 이집트 땅으로 들어가서 그곳에 살겠습니다.′ 하고 말한다면,

then listen to the word of the LORD, remnant of Judah: Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: If you are determined to go to Egypt, when you arrive there to stay,

|
the sword you fear shall reach you in the land of Egypt; the hunger you dread shall cling to you no less in Egypt, and there you shall die.

▶ 너희가 두려워하는 칼이 이집트 땅에서 너희를 뒤쫓고, 너희가 무서워하는 굶주림이 이집트에서 너희를 붙좇아, 그곳에서 너희가 죽게 될 것이다.

All those men who determine to go to Egypt to stay, shall die by the sword, famine, and pestilence; not one shall survive or escape the evil that I will bring upon them.

▶ 이집트 땅으로 얼굴을 돌려 그곳에 들어가 사는 자들은 모두 칼과 굶주림과 흑사병으로 죽게 되어, 그들 가운데에는 내가 그들에게 내릴 재앙에서 벗어나거나 빠져나갈 자가 하나도 없을 것이다.

For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Just as my furious anger was poured out upon the citizens of Jerusalem, so shall my anger be poured out on you when you reach Egypt. You shall become an example of malediction and horror, a curse and a reproach, and you shall never see this place again.

▶ ─ 만군의 주 이스라엘의 하느님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. ─ 너희가 이집트로 들어가면, 예루살렘의 주민들에게 나의 분노와 진노가 쏟아졌던 것처럼, 너희에게도 나의 진노가 쏟아 부어질 것이다. 그리하여 너희는 악담과 공포와 저주와 수치의 대상이 되고, 다시는 이곳을 볼 수 없게 될 것이다.’

It is the LORD who has spoken to you, remnant of Judah; do not go to Egypt! You can never say that I did not warn you this day.
|

▶ 주님께서 여러분에게 ‘유다의 남은 자들아, 이집트로 들어가지 마라.’ 하고 말씀하셨습니다. 똑똑히 알아 두십시오. 내가 오늘 여러분에게 경고합니다.

At the cost of your lives you have deceived me, sending me to the LORD, your God, saying, "Pray for us to the LORD, our God; make known to us all that the LORD, our God, shall say, and we will do it."

▶ 여러분은 여러분의 목숨이 달린 실수를 저질렀습니다. 사실 여러분은 주 여러분의 하느님께 나를 보내면서, ‘우리를 위하여 주 우리 하느님께 기도해 주십시오. 주 우리 하느님께서 말씀하시는 것은 무엇이나 알려 주시면 실천하겠습니다.’ 하고 말하였습니다.

|
Today I proclaim his message, but you obey the voice of the LORD, your God, in nothing that he has commissioned me to make known to you.

▶ 그래서 오늘 내가 여러분에게 그것을 알려 드렸는데, 여러분은 주 여러분의 하느님의 말씀을, 곧 그분께서 나를 보내시어 여러분에게 전하게 하신 모든 분부를 듣지 않았습니다.

|
Have no doubt of this, you shall die by the sword, famine, and pestilence in the place where you wish to go and settle.
|

▶ 그러니 이제 똑똑히 알아 두십시오. 여러분은, 여러분이 들어가 정착하고 싶어 했던 바로 그곳에서 칼과 굶주림과 흑사병으로 죽게 될 것입니다.”
