▶ Once in the time of the judges there was a famine in the land; so a man from Bethlehem of Judah departed with his wife and two sons to reside on the plateau of Moab.

그 사람의 이름은 엘리멜렉이고 아내의 이름은 나오미이며 두 아들의 이름은 마흘론과 킬욘이었는데, 이들은 유다 베들레헴 출신으로 에프랏 사람들이었다. 이렇게 그들은 모압 지방에 가서 살게 되었다.

이들은 모압 여자들을 아내로 맞아들였는데 한 여자의 이름은 오르파이고 다른 여자의 이름은 룻이었다. 그들은 거기에서 십 년쯤 살았다.

그러다가 마흘론과 킬욘, 이 두 사람도 죽었다. 그래서 나오미는 두 자식과 남편을 여읜 채 혼자 남게 되었다.

나오미는 며느리들과 함께 모압 지방을 떠나 돌아가기로 하였다. 주님께서 당신 백성을 돌보시어 그들에게 양식을 베푸셨다는 소식을 모압 지방에서 들었기 때문이다.

▶ She then made ready to go back from the plateau of Moab because word reached her there that the LORD had visited his people and given them food.

그래서 나오미가 살던 곳을 떠나자 두 며느리도 따라나섰다. 그리하여 그들은 유다 땅으로 돌아가려고 길을 떠났다.

▶ She and her two daughters-in-law left the place where they had been living. Then as they were on the road back to the land of Judah,

나오미가 두 며느리에게 말하였다. “자, 각자 제 어머니 집으로 돌아가거라. 너희가 죽은 남편들과 나에게 해 준 것처럼 주님께서 너희에게 자애를 베푸시기를 빈다.

▶ Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go back, each of you, to your mother's house! May the LORD be kind to you as you were to the departed and to me!

또한 주님께서 너희가 저마다 새 남편 집에서 보금자리를 마련하도록 배려해 주시기를 바란다.” 그러고서는 그들에게 입 맞추었다. 그러자 그들은 소리 높여 울면서

▶ May the LORD grant each of you a husband and a home in which you will find rest." She kissed them good-bye, but they wept with loud sobs,

그러나 나오미가 말하였다. “내 딸들아, 돌아가려무나. 어쩌자고 나와 함께 가려고 하느냐? 내 배 속에 아들들이 들어 있어 너희 남편이 될 수 있기라도 하단 말이냐?

▶ "Go back, my daughters!" said Naomi. "Why should you come with me? Have I other sons in my womb who may become your husbands?

돌아가려무나, 내 딸들아! 가거라. 남편을 맞이하기에는 내가 너무 늙지 않았느냐? 설사 나에게 아직 희망이 있다 하여, 바로 오늘 밤에 남편을 맞이해서 아들들을 낳는다 하더라도,

▶ Go back, my daughters! Go, for I am too old to marry again. And even if I could offer any hopes, or if tonight I had a husband or had borne sons,

그 애들이 클 때까지 너희가 기다릴 수 있겠느냐? 새로 남편을 맞이하기를 마다하려느냐? 내 딸들아, 안 된다. 주님의 손에 얻어맞은 이 몸, 너희를 생각하면 내 마음이 너무나 쓰라리단다.”

▶ would you then wait and deprive yourselves of husbands until those sons grew up? No, my daughters! my lot is too bitter for you, because the LORD has extended his hand against me."

|
그들은 소리 높여 더 서럽게 울었다. 그리고 오르파는 시어머니에게 작별을 고하며 입 맞추었다. 그러나 룻은 시어머니에게 바싹 달라붙었다.

|
▶ Again they sobbed aloud and wept; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-bye, but Ruth stayed with her.

나오미가 말하였다. “보아라, 네 동서는 제 겨레와 신들에게로 돌아갔다. 너도 네 동서를 따라 돌아가거라.”

▶ "See now!" she said, "your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and her god. Go back after your sister-in-law!"

그러자 룻이 말하였다. “어머님을 두고 돌아가라고 저를 다그치지 마십시오. 어머님 가시는 곳으로 저도 가고 어머님 머무시는 곳에 저도 머물렵니다. 어머님의 겨레가 저의 겨레요 어머님의 하느님이 제 하느님이십니다.

▶ But Ruth said, "Do not ask me to abandon or forsake you! for wherever you go I will go, wherever you lodge I will lodge, your people shall be my people, and your God my God.

|
어머님께서 숨을 거두시는 곳에서 저도 죽어 거기에 묻히렵니다. 주님께 맹세하건대 오직 죽음만이 저와 어머님 사이를 갈라놓을 수 있습니다.”

▶ Wherever you die I will die, and there be buried. May the LORD do so and so to me, and more besides, if aught but death separates me from you!"

룻이 자기와 함께 가기로 굳게 결심하였음을 보고, 나오미는 그를 설득하는 것을 그만두었다.

▶ Naomi then ceased to urge her, for she saw she was determined to go with her.
|

|
그래서 두 사람은 길을 걸어 베들레헴에 다다랐다. 그들이 베들레헴에 다다랐을 때에 온 마을이 그들 때문에 떠들썩해지며, “저 사람 나오미 아니야?” 하고 아낙네들이 소리 질렀다.

▶ So they went on together till they reached Bethlehem. On their arrival there, the whole city was astir over them, and the women asked, "Can this be Naomi?"

나오미가 그들에게 말하였다. “나를 나오미라 부르지 말고 마라라고 부르셔요. 전능하신 분께서 나를 너무나 쓰라리게 하신 까닭이랍니다.

▶ But she said to them, "Do not call me Naomi. Call me Mara, for the Almighty has made it very bitter for me.

|
나 아쉬움 없이 떠나갔는데 주님께서 나를 빈손으로 돌아오게 하셨답니다. 그런데 어찌 그대들은 나를 나오미라 부르나요? 주님께서 나를 거칠게 다루시고 전능하신 분께서 나에게 불행을 안겨 주셨답니다.”

▶ I went away with an abundance, but the LORD has brought me back destitute. Why should you call me Naomi, since the LORD has pronounced against me and the Almighty has brought evil upon me?"

|
이렇게 하여 나오미는 모압 출신 며느리 룻과 함께 모압 지방에서 돌아왔다. 그들이 베들레헴에 도착한 것은 보리 수확이 시작될 무렵이었다.

▶ Thus it was that Naomi returned with the Moabite daughter-in-law, Ruth, who accompanied her back from the plateau of Moab. They arrived in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.
