그 무렵에 다시 많은 군중이 모여 있었는데 먹을 것이 없었다. 예수님께서 제자들을 가까이 불러 말씀하셨다.

▶ In those days when there again was a great crowd without anything to eat, he summoned the disciples and said,

“저 군중이 가엾구나. 벌써 사흘 동안이나 내 곁에 머물렀는데 먹을 것이 없으니 말이다.

|
▶ "My heart is moved with pity for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat.
|

|
내가 저들을 굶겨서 집으로 돌려보내면 길에서 쓰러질 것이다. 더구나 저들 가운데에는 먼 데서 온 사람들도 있다.”

▶ If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a great distance."

그러자 제자들이 “이 광야에서 누가 어디서 빵을 구해 저 사람들을 배불릴 수 있겠습니까?” 하고 대답하였다.

▶ His disciples answered him, "Where can anyone get enough bread to satisfy them here in this deserted place?"

예수님께서 “너희에게 빵이 몇 개나 있느냐?” 하고 물으시자, 그들이 “일곱 개 있습니다.” 하고 대답하였다.

▶ Still he asked them, "How many loaves do you have?" "Seven," they replied.

예수님께서는 군중에게 땅에 앉으라고 분부하셨다. 그리고 빵 일곱 개를 손에 들고 감사를 드리신 다음, 떼어서 제자들에게 주시며 나누어 주라고 하시니, 그들이 군중에게 나누어 주었다.

▶ He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then, taking the seven loaves he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to distribute, and they distributed them to the crowd.

또 제자들이 작은 물고기 몇 마리를 가지고 있었는데, 예수님께서는 그것도 축복하신 다음에 나누어 주라고 이르셨다.

▶ They also had a few fish. He said the blessing over them and ordered them distributed also.
|

|
사람들은 배불리 먹었다. 그리고 남은 조각을 모았더니 일곱 바구니나 되었다.

▶ They ate and were satisfied. They picked up the fragments left over - seven baskets.

사람들은 사천 명가량이었다. 예수님께서는 그들을 돌려보내시고 나서,

▶ There were about four thousand people. He dismissed them

|
곧바로 제자들과 함께 배에 올라 달마누타 지방으로 가셨다.

▶ and got into the boat with his disciples and came to the region of Dalmanutha.

바리사이들이 와서 예수님과 논쟁하기 시작하였다. 그분을 시험하려고 하늘에서 오는 표징을 요구하였던 것이다.

▶ The Pharisees came forward and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him.

예수님께서는 마음속으로 깊이 탄식하며 말씀하셨다. “어찌하여 이 세대가 표징을 요구하는가? 내가 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 이 세대는 어떠한 표징도 받지 못할 것이다.”

▶ He sighed from the depth of his spirit and said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation."

그러고 나서 그들을 버려두신 채 다시 배를 타고 건너편으로 가셨다.

▶ Then he left them, got into the boat again, and went off to the other shore.

그런데 제자들이 빵을 가져오는 것을 잊어버려, 그들이 가진 빵이 배 안에는 한 개밖에 없었다.

▶ They had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.
|

|
예수님께서 그들에게, “너희는 주의하여라. 바리사이들의 누룩과 헤로데의 누룩을 조심하여라.” 하고 분부하셨다.

▶ He enjoined them, "Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod."

그러자 제자들은 자기들에게 빵이 없다고 서로 수군거렸다.

▶ They concluded among themselves that it was because they had no bread.

예수님께서는 그것을 아시고 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “너희는 어찌하여 빵이 없다고 수군거리느냐? 아직도 이해하지 못하고 깨닫지 못하느냐? 너희 마음이 그렇게도 완고하냐?

▶ When he became aware of this he said to them, "Why do you conclude that it is because you have no bread? Do you not yet understand or comprehend? Are your hearts hardened?

너희는 눈이 있어도 보지 못하고 귀가 있어도 듣지 못하느냐? 너희는 기억하지 못하느냐?

▶ Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear? And do you not remember,

|
내가 빵 다섯 개를 오천 명에게 떼어 주었을 때, 빵 조각을 몇 광주리나 가득 거두었느냐?” 그들이 “열둘입니다.” 하고 대답하였다.

▶ when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many wicker baskets full of fragments you picked up?" They answered him, "Twelve."

▶ "When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many full baskets of fragments did you pick up?" They answered him, "Seven."

그들은 벳사이다로 갔다. 그런데 사람들이 눈먼 이를 예수님께 데리고 와서는 그에게 손을 대어 주십사고 청하였다.

▶ When they arrived at Bethsaida, they brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him.

그분께서는 그 눈먼 이의 손을 잡아 마을 밖으로 데리고 나가셔서, 그의 두 눈에 침을 바르시고 그에게 손을 얹으신 다음, “무엇이 보이느냐?” 하고 물으셨다.

▶ He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. Putting spittle on his eyes he laid his hands on him and asked, "Do you see anything?"

그는 앞을 쳐다보며, “사람들이 보입니다. 그런데 걸어다니는 나무처럼 보입니다.” 하고 대답하였다.

▶ Looking up he replied, "I see people looking like trees and walking."

|
그분께서 다시 그의 두 눈에 손을 얹으시니 그가 똑똑히 보게 되었다. 그는 시력이 회복되어 모든 것을 뚜렷이 보게 된 것이다.

▶ Then he laid hands on his eyes a second time and he saw clearly; his sight was restored and he could see everything distinctly.

제자들이 대답하였다. “세례자 요한이라고 합니다. 그러나 어떤 이들은 엘리야라 하고, 또 어떤 이들은 예언자 가운데 한 분이라고 합니다.”

▶ He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days.

▶ He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

그러나 예수님께서는 돌아서서 제자들을 보신 다음 베드로에게, “사탄아, 내게서 물러가라. 너는 하느님의 일은 생각하지 않고 사람의 일만 생각하는구나.” 하며 꾸짖으셨다.

▶ At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do."
