하느님의 위대하심 The Divine Power and Mercy
1 영원히 살아 계시는 분께서 만물을 함께 창조하셨다. 1 The Eternal is the judge of all things without exception; the LORD alone is just.
2 주님 홀로 의로우신 분임이 드러나리라. 그분 같은 존재는 결코 없다. 2 Whom has he made equal to describing his works, and who can probe his mighty deeds?
3 그분께서는 당신의 손바닥 안에서 세상을 조종하시니 만물이 그분의 뜻을 따른다. 그분께서 당신의 권능으로 만물의 임금이 되시고 만물 안에서 속된 것과 거룩한 것을 갈라놓으시기 때문이다. 3 Who can measure his majestic power, or exhaust the tale of his mercies?
4 그분께서는 아무에게도 당신의 업적을 알릴 수 있게 해 주지 않으셨으니 누가 그분의 위대한 업적을 헤아릴 수 있으랴? 4 One cannot lessen, nor increase, nor penetrate the wonders of the LORD.
5 누가 그분의 위대하신 권능을 측정하고 누가 그분의 자비를 낱낱이 묘사할 수 있으랴? 5 When a man ends he is only beginning, and when he stops he is still bewildered.
6 주님의 놀라운 업적에서 뺄 수도 더할 수도 없고 그것을 헤아릴 수도 없다. 6 What is man, of what worth is he? the good, the evil in him, what are these?
7 인간이 그 일을 끝냈다고 생각할 때가 바로 시작이고 중도에 그친다 해도 미궁에 빠지기 마련이다. 7 The sum of a man's days is great if it reaches a hundred years:
허무한 인간
8 인간은 무엇인가, 무슨 가치가 있는가? 그의 선함은 무엇이고 악함은 무엇인가? 8 Like a drop of sea water, like a grain of sand, so are these few years among the days of eternity.
9 인간의 수명은 기껏 백 년이지만 영면의 시간은 누구도 헤아릴 수 없다. 9 That is why the LORD is patient with men and showers upon them his mercy.
10 바다의 물 한 방울과 모래 한 알처럼 인간의 수명은 영원의 날수 안에서 불과 몇 해일 뿐이다. 10 He sees and understands that their death is grievous, and so he forgives them all the more.
11 이 때문에 주님께서는 사람들에게 인내심을 보이시고 그들에게 당신 자비를 쏟으신다. 11 Man may be merciful to his fellow man, but the LORD'S mercy reaches all flesh,
12 그분께서는 그들의 종말이 얼마나 비참한지를 보고 아시며 그런 까닭에 당신의 용서를 넘치도록 베푸신다. 12 Reproving, admonishing, teaching, as a shepherd guides his flock;
13 인간의 자비는 제 이웃에게 미치지만 주님의 자비는 모든 생명체에 미친다. 그분께서는 그들을 꾸짖고 훈육하고 가르치시며 목자처럼 당신 양 떼를 돌아오게 하신다. 13 Merciful to those who accept his guidance, who are diligent in his precepts.
14 그분께서는 교훈을 받아들이는 이와 당신의 규정을 열심히 따르는 이들에게 자비를 보이신다. 14 My son, to your charity add no reproach, nor spoil any gift by harsh words.
너그러움
15 얘야, 너의 선행에 비난을 섞지 말고 온갖 선물에 모진 말을 곁들이지 마라. 15 Like dew that abates a burning wind, so does a word improve a gift.
16 이슬이 불볕더위를 가라앉히지 않느냐? 그처럼 말 한마디가 선물보다 낫다. 16 Sometimes the word means more than the gift; both are offered by a kindly man.
17 보라, 말 한마디가 좋은 선물을 능가하지 않느냐? 너그러운 사람에게는 그 두 가지가 다 있다. 17 Only a fool upbraids before giving; a grudging gift wears out the expectant eyes.
18 어리석고 너그럽지 못한 자는 남을 꾸짖고 인색한 자의 선물은 눈이 빠지게 만든다. 18 Be informed before speaking; before sickness prepare the cure.
반성과 선견지명
19 말하기 전에 배우고 앓기 전에 몸조심하여라. 19 Before you are judged, seek merit for yourself, and at the time of visitation you will have a ransom.
20 심판이 닥치기 전에 너 자신을 성찰하여라. 그러면 셈 바칠 때에 용서를 받으리라. 20 Before you have fallen, humble yourself; when you have sinned, show repentance.
21 병들기 전에 너 자신을 낮추고 죄를 지었을 때에는 회개의 태도를 보여라. 21 Delay not to forsake sins, neglect it not till you are in distress.
22 서원을 제때에 채우기를 망설이지 말고 죽기까지 그 이행을 미루지 마라. 22 Let nothing prevent the prompt payment of your vows; wait not to fulfill them when you are dying.
23 서원을 하기 전에 자신을 준비시켜 주님을 떠보는 인간처럼 되지 마라. 23 Before making a vow have the means to fulfill it; be not one who tries the LORD.
24 끝 날에 닥칠 그분의 분노를, 그분께서 얼굴을 돌리며 징벌하실 때를 생각하여라. 24 Think of wrath and the day of death, the time of vengeance when he will hide his face.
25 배부를 때에는 굶주릴 때를, 부유한 시절에는 가난과 궁핍을 생각하여라. 25 Remember the time of hunger in the time of plenty, poverty and want in the day of wealth.
26 아침부터 저녁까지 시간은 흐르고 주님 앞에서 만물은 금세 지나간다. 26 Between morning and evening the weather changes; before the LORD all things are fleeting.
27 지혜로운 사람은 모든 면에서 용의주도하다. 죄악의 날들에도 그는 악행을 조심하리라. 27 A wise man is circumspect in all things; when sin is rife he keeps himself from wrongdoing.
28 지각 있는 이는 누구나 지혜를 알고 그것을 찾은 이에게 찬사를 보낸다. 28 Any learned man should make wisdom known, and he who attains to her should declare her praise;
29 지각 있게 말하는 이들은 스스로 지혜로워지고 적절한 격언들을 쏟아 놓는다. 유일하신 주님께 의지하는 것은 죽은 마음으로 죽은 자에게 매달리는 것보다 낫다. 29 Those trained in her words must show their wisdom, dispensing sound proverbs like life-giving waters.
자제 Self-Control
30 네 욕망을 따르지 말고 욕심을 절제하여라. 30 Go not after your lusts, but keep your desires in check.
31 네 영혼이 욕망을 채우도록 내버려 두면 너는 원수들의 놀림감이 되리라. 31 If you satisfy your lustful appetites they will make you the sport of your enemies.
32 온갖 사치로 흥청거리지 마라. 그 비용으로 궁핍해질까 두렵다. 32 Have no joy in the pleasures of a moment which bring on poverty redoubled;
33 네 지갑 속에 아무것도 없으면서 꾼 돈으로 잔치를 벌이다 거지가 되지 마라. 그것은 사실 자신의 생명을 거스르는 행동이다. 33 Become not a glutton and a winebibber with nothing in your purse.
