바벨 탑 바벨탑 이야기 The Tower of Babel
1 온 세상이 같은 말을 하고 같은 낱말들을 쓰고 있었다. 1 온 세상이 한 가지 말을 쓰고 있었다. 물론 낱말도 같았다. 1 The whole world spoke the same language, using the same words.
2 사람들이 동쪽에서 이주해 오다가 신아르 지방에서 한 벌판을 만나 거기에 자리 잡고 살았다. 2 사람들은 동쪽에서 옮아 오다가 시날 지방 한 들판에 이르러 거기 자리를 잡고는 2 While men were migrating in the east, they came upon a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.
3 그들은 서로 말하였다. “자, 벽돌을 빚어 단단히 구워 내자.” 그리하여 그들은 돌 대신 벽돌을 쓰고, 진흙 대신 역청을 쓰게 되었다. 3 의논하였다. "어서 벽돌을 빚어 불에 단단히 구워내자." 이리하여 사람들은 돌 대신에 벽돌을 쓰고, 흙 대신에 역청을 쓰게 되었다. 3 They said to one another, "Come, let us mold bricks and harden them with fire." They used bricks for stone, and bitumen for mortar.
4 그들은 또 말하였다. “자, 성읍을 세우고 꼭대기가 하늘까지 닿는 탑을 세워 이름을 날리자. 그렇게 해서 우리가 온 땅으로 흩어지지 않게 하자.” 4 또 사람들은 의논하였다. "어서 도시를 세우고 그 가운데 꼭대기가 하늘에 닿게 탑을 쌓아 우리 이름을 날려 사방으로 흩어지지 않도록 하자." 4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky, and so make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered all over the earth."
5 그러자 주님께서 내려오시어 사람들이 세운 성읍과 탑을 보시고 5 야훼께서 땅에 내려오시어 사람들이 이렇게 세운 도시와 탑을 보시고 5 LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men had built.
6 말씀하셨다. “보라, 저들은 한 겨레이고 모두 같은 말을 쓰고 있다. 이것은 그들이 하려는 일의 시작일 뿐, 이제 그들이 하고자 하는 것은 무엇이든 못할 일이 없을 것이다. 6 생각하셨다. "사람들이 한 종족이라 말이 같아서 안 되겠구나. 이것은 사람들이 하려는 일의 시작에 지나지 않겠지. 앞으로 하려고만 하면 못할 일이 없겠구나. 6 Then the LORD said: "If now, while they are one people, all speaking the same language, they have started to do this, nothing will later stop them from doing whatever they presume to do.
7 자, 우리가 내려가서 그들의 말을 뒤섞어 놓아, 서로 남의 말을 알아듣지 못하게 만들어 버리자.” 7 당장 땅에 내려가서 사람들이 쓰는 말을 뒤섞어놓아 서로 알아듣지 못하게 해야겠다." 7 Let us then go down and there confuse their language, so that one will not understand what another says."
8 주님께서는 그들을 거기에서 온 땅으로 흩어 버리셨다. 그래서 그들은 그 성읍을 세우는 일을 그만두었다. 8 야훼께서는 사람들을 거기에서 온 땅으로 흩으셨다. 그리하여 사람들은 도시를 세우던 일을 그만두었다. 8 Thus the LORD scattered them from there all over the earth, and they stopped building the city.
9 그리하여 그곳의 이름을 바벨이라 하였다. 주님께서 거기에서 온 땅의 말을 뒤섞어 놓으시고, 사람들을 온 땅으로 흩어 버리셨기 때문이다. 9 야훼께서 온 세상의 말을 거기에서 뒤섞어놓아 사람들을 온 땅에 흩으셨다고 해서 그 도시의 이름을 바벨이라고 불렀다. 9 That is why it was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the speech of all the world. It was from that place that he scattered them all over the earth.
셈에서 아브라함까지 셈의 계보 The Line from Shem to Abraham
10 셈의 족보는 이러하다. 셈은 나이가 백 세 되었을 때, 아르팍삿을 낳았다. 홍수가 있은 지 이 년 뒤의 일이다. 10 셈의 후손은 다음과 같다. 셈은 홍수가 끝난 지 이 년 뒤 그의 나이 백 세가 되어 아르박삿을 낳았다. 10 This is the record of the descendants of Shem. When Shem was one hundred years old, he became the father of Arpachshad, two years after the flood.
11 아르팍삿을 낳은 뒤, 셈은 오백 년을 살면서 아들딸들을 낳았다. 11 셈은 아르박삿을 낳은 뒤 오백 년 동안을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다. 11 Shem lived five hundred years after the birth of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters.
12 아르팍삿은 삼십오 세에 셀라흐를 낳았다. 12 아르박삿은 삼십오 세 되던 해에 셀라를 낳았다. 12 When Arpachshad was thirty-five years old, he became the father of Shelah.
13 셀라흐를 낳은 뒤, 아르팍삿은 사백삼 년을 살면서 아들딸들을 낳았다. 13 아르박삿은 셀라를 낳은 뒤 사백삼 년 동안을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다. 13 Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after the birth of Shelah, and he had other sons and daughters.
14 셀라흐는 삼십 세에 에베르를 낳았다. 14 셀라는 삼십 세 되던 해에 에벨을 낳았다. 14 When Shelah was thirty years old, he became the father of Eber.
15 에베르를 낳은 뒤, 셀라흐는 사백삼 년을 살면서 아들딸들을 낳았다. 15 셀라는 에벨을 낳은 뒤 사백삼 년 동안을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다. 15 Shelah lived four hundred and three years after the birth of Eber, and he had other sons and daughters.
16 에베르는 삼십사 세 되었을 때, 펠렉을 낳았다. 16 에벨은 삼십사 세 되던 해에 벨렉을 낳았다. 16 When Eber was thirty-four years old, he became the father of Peleg.
17 펠렉을 낳은 뒤, 에베르는 사백삼십 년을 살면서 아들딸들을 낳았다. 17 에벨은 벨렉을 낳은 뒤 사백삼십 년 동안을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다. 17 Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after the birth of Peleg, and he had other sons and daughters.
18 펠렉은 삼십 세 되었을 때, 르우를 낳았다. 18 벨렉은 삼십 세 되던 해에 르우를 낳았다. 18 When Peleg was thirty years old, he became the father of Reu.
19 르우를 낳은 뒤, 펠렉은 이백구 년을 살면서 아들딸들을 낳았다. 19 벨렉은 르우를 낳은 뒤 이백구 년 동안을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다. 19 Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after the birth of Reu, and he had other sons and daughters.
20 르우는 삼십이 세 되었을 때, 스룩을 낳았다. 20 르우는 삼십이 세 되던 해에 스룩을 낳았다. 20 When Reu was thirty-two years old, he became the father of Serug.
21 스룩을 낳은 뒤, 르우는 이백칠 년을 살면서 아들딸들을 낳았다. 21 르우는 스룩을 낳은 뒤 이백칠 년 동안을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다. 21 Reu lived two hundred and seven years after the birth of Serug, and he had other sons and daughters.
22 스룩은 삼십 세 되었을 때, 나호르를 낳았다. 22 스룩은 삼십 세 되던 해에 나홀을 낳았다. 22 When Serug was thirty years old, he became the father of Nahor.
23 나호르를 낳은 뒤, 스룩은 이백 년을 살면서 아들딸들을 낳았다. 23 스룩은 나홀을 낳은 뒤 이백 년 동안을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다. 23 Serug lived two hundred years after the birth of Nahor, and he had other sons and daughters.
24 나호르는 이십구 세 되었을 때, 테라를 낳았다. 24 나홀은 이십구 세 되던 해에 데라를 낳았다. 24 When Nahor was twenty-nine years old, he became the father of Terah.
25 테라를 낳은 뒤, 나호르는 백십구 년을 살면서 아들딸들을 낳았다. 25 나홀은 데라를 낳은 뒤 백십구 년 동안을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다. 25 Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after the birth of Terah, and he had other sons and daughters.
26 테라는 칠십 세 되었을 때, 아브람과 나호르와 하란을 낳았다. 26 데라는 칠십 세가 되기까지 아브람과 나홀과 하란을 낳았다. 26 When Terah was seventy years old, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.
27 테라의 족보는 이러하다. 테라는 아브람과 나호르와 하란을 낳고, 하란은 롯을 낳았다. 27 데라의 후손은 다음과 같다. 데라는 아브람과 나홀과 하란을 낳았고 하란은 롯을 낳았다. 27 This is the record of the descendants of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran became the father of Lot.
28 그러나 하란은 본고장인 칼데아의 우르에서 자기 아버지 테라보다 먼저 죽었다. 28 하란은 고향인 갈대아 우르에서 자기의 아버지보다 먼저 죽었다. 28 Haran died before his father Terah, in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
29 아브람과 나호르가 아내를 맞아들였는데, 아브람의 아내 이름은 사라이이고 나호르의 아내 이름은 밀카였다. 밀카는 하란의 딸로서 이스카와 동기간이었다. 29 아브람과 나홀이 아내를 맞았는데, 아브람의 아내 이름은 사래요, 나홀의 아내는 밀가였다. 밀가는 하란의 딸로서 이스가와는 동기간이었다. 29 Abram and Nahor took wives; the name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah, daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.
30 사라이는 임신하지 못하는 몸이어서 자식이 없었다. 30 사래는 잉태를 하지 못하는 몸이었으므로 자식이 없었다. 30 Sarai was barren; she had no child.
31 테라는 아들 아브람과, 아들 하란에게서 난 손자 롯과, 아들 아브람의 아내인 며느리 사라이를 데리고, 가나안 땅으로 가려고 칼데아의 우르를 떠났다. 그러나 그들은 하란에 이르러 그곳에 자리 잡고 살았다. 31 데라는 아들 아브람과 아들 하란에게서 난 손자 롯과, 아들 아브람의 아내인 며느리 사래를 데리고 갈대아 우르에서 가나안을 향하여 길을 떠나다가 하란에 이르러 거기에다 자리잡고 살았다. 31 Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot, son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and brought them out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to go to the land of Canaan. But when they reached Haran, they settled there.
32 테라는 이백오 년을 살고 하란에서 죽었다. 32 데라는 이백오 년을 살고 하란에서 죽었다. 32 The lifetime of Terah was two hundred and five years; then Terah died in Haran.
