아브람의 아내 사라이는 그에게 자식을 낳아 주지 못하였다. 사라이에게는 이집트인 여종이 하나 있었는데, 그 이름은 하가르였다.

▶ Abram's wife Sarai had borne him no children. She had, however, an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar.

사라이가 아브람에게 말하였다. “여보, 주님께서 나에게 자식을 갖지 못하게 하시니, 내 여종과 한자리에 드셔요. 행여 그 아이의 몸을 빌려서라도 내가 아들을 얻을 수 있을지 모르잖아요.” 아브람은 사라이의 말을 들었다.

▶ Sarai said to Abram: "The LORD has kept me from bearing children. Have intercourse, then, with my maid; perhaps I shall have sons through her." Abram heeded Sarai's request.

그리하여 아브람의 아내 사라이는 자기의 이집트인 여종 하가르를 데려다, 자기 남편 아브람에게 아내로 주었다. 아브람이 가나안 땅에 자리 잡은 지 십 년이 지난 뒤의 일이었다.

▶ Thus, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, his wife Sarai took her maid, Hagar the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his concubine.

그가 하가르와 한자리에 들자 그 여자가 임신하였다. 그 여자는 자기가 임신한 것을 알고서 제 여주인을 업신여겼다.

▶ He had intercourse with her, and she became pregnant. When she became aware of her pregnancy, she looked on her mistress with disdain.

그래서 사라이가 아브람에게 말하였다. “내가 이렇게 부당한 일을 겪는 것은 당신 책임이에요. 내가 내 여종을 당신 품 안에 안겨 주었는데, 이 여종은 자기가 임신한 것을 알고서 나를 업신여긴답니다. 아, 주님께서 나와 당신 사이의 시비를 가려 주셨으면!”

▶ So Sarai said to Abram: "You are responsible for this outrage against me. I myself gave my maid to your embrace; but ever since she became aware of her pregnancy, she has been looking on me with disdain. May the LORD decide between you and me!"

아브람이 사라이에게 말하였다. "여보, 당신의 여종이니 당신 손에 달려 있지 않소? 당신 좋을 대로 하구려." 그리하여 사라이가 하가르를 구박하니, 하가르는 사라이를 피하여 도망쳤다.

▶ Abram told Sarai: "Your maid is in your power. Do to her whatever you please." Sarai then abused her so much that Hagar ran away from her.

주님의 천사가 광야에 있는 샘터에서 하가르를 만났다. 그것은 수르로 가는 길가에 있는 샘이었다.

▶ The LORD'S messenger found her by a spring in the wilderness, the spring on the road to Shur,

그 천사가 “사라이의 여종 하가르야, 어디에서 와서 어디로 가는 길이냐?” 하고 묻자, 그가 대답하였다. “저의 여주인 사라이를 피하여 도망치는 길입니다.”

▶ and he asked, "Hagar, maid of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She answered, "I am running away from my mistress, Sarai."

주님의 천사가 그에게 말하였다. “너의 여주인에게 돌아가서 그에게 복종하여라.”

▶ But the LORD'S messenger told her: "Go back to your mistress and submit to her abusive treatment.
|

주님의 천사가 다시 그에게 말하였다. “내가 너의 후손을 셀 수 없을 만큼 번성하게 해 주겠다.”

|
|
▶ I will make your descendants so numerous," added the LORD'S messenger, "that they will be too many to count.

주님의 천사가 또 그에게 말하였다. “보라, 너는 임신한 몸 이제 아들을 낳으리니 그 이름을 이스마엘이라 하여라. 네가 고통 속에서 부르짖는 소리를 주님께서 들으셨다.

▶ Besides," the LORD'S messenger said to her: "You are now pregnant and shall bear a son; you shall name him Ishmael, For the LORD has heard you, God has answered you.

|
그는 들나귀 같은 사람이 되리라. 그는 모든 이를 치려고 손을 들고 모든 이는 그를 치려고 손을 들리라. 그는 자기의 모든 형제들에게 맞서 혼자 살아가리라.”

▶ He shall be a wild ass of a man, his hand against everyone, and everyone's hand against him; In opposition to all his kin shall he encamp."

|
하가르는 “내가 그분을 뵈었는데 아직도 살아 있는가?” 하면서, 자기에게 말씀하신 주님의 이름을 “당신은 ‘저를 돌보시는 하느님’이십니다.”라고 하였다.

▶ To the LORD who spoke to her she gave a name, saying, "You are the God of Vision"; she meant, "Have I really seen God and remained alive after my vision?"

그리하여 그 우물을 브에르 라하이 로이라 하였다. 그것은 카데스와 베렛 사이에 있다.

▶ That is why the well is called Beer-lahai-roi. It is between Kadesh and Bered.

|
하가르는 아브람에게 아들을 낳아 주었다. 아브람은 하가르가 낳은 아들의 이름을 이스마엘이라 하였다.

▶ Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram named the son whom Hagar bore him Ishmael.
