▶ The two angels reached Sodom in the evening, as Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he got up to greet them; and bowing down with his face to the ground,

말하였다. “나리들, 부디 제 집으로 드시어 밤을 지내십시오. 발도 씻고 쉬신 뒤에, 내일 아침 일찍 일어나 길을 떠나십시오.” 그러자 그들은 “아니오. 광장에서 밤을 지내겠소.” 하고 대답하였다.

▶ he said, "Please, gentlemen, come aside into your servant's house for the night, and bathe your feet; you can get up early to continue your journey." But they replied, "No, we shall pass the night in the town square."

그러나 롯이 간절히 권하자, 그들은 롯의 집에 들기로 하고 그의 집으로 들어갔다. 롯이 그들에게 큰 상을 차리고 누룩 안 든 빵을 구워 주자 그들이 먹었다.

▶ He urged them so strongly, however, that they turned aside to his place and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking cakes without leaven, and they dined.

그들이 아직 잠자리에 들기 전이었다. 성읍의 사내들 곧 소돔의 사내들이 젊은이부터 늙은이까지 온통 사방에서 몰려와 그 집을 에워쌌다.

▶ Before they went to bed, all the townsmen of Sodom, both young and old - all the people to the last man - closed in on the house.
|

그러고서는 롯을 불러 말하였다. “오늘 밤 당신 집에 온 사람들 어디 있소? 우리한테로 데리고 나오시오. 우리가 그자들과 재미 좀 봐야겠소.”

▶ They called to Lot and said to him, "Where are the men who came to your house tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have intimacies with them."
|

롯이 문밖으로 나가 등 뒤로 문을 닫고

▶ Lot went out to meet them at the entrance. When he had shut the door behind him,

말하였다. “형제들, 제발 나쁜 짓 하지들 마시오.

▶ he said, "I beg you, my brothers, not to do this wicked thing.
|
|

|
자, 나에게 남자를 알지 못하는 딸이 둘 있소. 그 아이들을 당신들에게 내어 줄 터이니, 당신들 좋을 대로 하시오. 다만 내 지붕 밑으로 들어온 사람들이니, 이들에게는 아무 짓도 말아 주시오.”

▶ I have two daughters who have never had intercourse with men. Let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you please. But don't do anything to these men, for you know they have come under the shelter of my roof."

그러나 그들은 “비켜라!” 하면서 “이자는 나그네살이하려고 이곳에 온 주제에 재판관 행세를 하려 하는구나. 이제 우리가 저자들보다 너를 더 고약하게 다루어야겠다.” 하고는, 그 사람 롯에게 달려들어 밀치고 문을 부수려 하였다.

▶ They replied, "Stand back! This fellow," they sneered, "came here as an immigrant, and now he dares to give orders! We'll treat you worse than them!" With that, they pressed hard against Lot, moving in closer to break down the door.

그때에 그 두 사람이 손을 내밀어 롯을 집 안으로 끌어들인 다음 문을 닫았다.

▶ But his guests put out their hands, pulled Lot inside with them, and closed the door;
|

|
그리고 그 집 문 앞에 있는 사내들을 아이부터 어른까지 모두 눈이 멀게 하여, 문을 찾지 못하게 만들었다.

|
|
▶ at the same time they struck the men at the entrance of the house, one and all, with such a blinding light that they were utterly unable to reach the doorway.
|

그러고 나서 그 사람들은 롯에게 말하였다. “그대의 가족들이 여기에 또 있소? 사위들과 그대의 아들딸들, 그리고 성읍에 있는 그대의 가족을 모두 데리고 이곳에서 나가시오.

▶ Then the angels said to Lot: "Who else belongs to you here? Your sons (sons-in-law) and your daughters and all who belong to you in the city - take them away from it!
|

|
우리는 지금 이곳을 파멸시키려 하오. 저들에 대한 원성이 주님 앞에 너무나 크기 때문이오. 주님께서 소돔을 파멸시키시려고 우리를 보내셨소.”

|
▶ We are about to destroy this place, for the outcry reaching the LORD against those in the city is so great that he has sent us to destroy it."

|
롯은 밖으로 나가 장차 자기 딸들을 데려갈 사위들에게 말하였다. “자, 이곳을 빠져나가게. 주님께서 곧 이 성읍을 파멸시키실 것이네.” 그러나 사위들은 롯이 우스갯소리를 한다고 생각하였다.

▶ So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had contracted marriage with his daughters. "Get up and leave this place," he told them; "the LORD is about to destroy the city." But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.

|
동이 틀 무렵에 천사들이 롯을 재촉하며 말하였다. “자, 이 성읍에 벌이 내릴 때 함께 휩쓸리지 않으려거든, 그대의 아내와 여기에 있는 두 딸을 데리고 어서 가시오.”

▶ As dawn was breaking, the angels urged Lot on, saying, "On your way! Take with you your wife and your two daughters who are here,

그런데도 롯이 망설이자 그 사람들은 롯과 그의 아내와 두 딸의 손을 잡고 성읍 밖으로 데리고 나갔다. 주님께서 롯에게 자비를 베푸셨기 때문이다.

▶ When he hesitated, the men, by the LORD'S mercy, seized his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters and led them to safety outside the city.

그들은 롯의 가족을 밖으로 데리고 나와 말하였다. “달아나 목숨을 구하시오. 뒤를 돌아다보아서는 안 되오. 이 들판 어디에서도 멈추어 서지 마시오. 휩쓸려 가지 않으려거든 산으로 달아나시오.”

▶ As soon as they had been brought outside, he was told: "Flee for your life! Don't look back or stop anywhere on the Plain. Get off to the hills at once, or you will be swept away."

그러나 롯은 그들에게 말하였다. “나리, 제발 그러지 마십시오.

▶ "Oh, no, my lord!" replied Lot.
|
|

|
이 종이 나리 눈에 들어, 나리께서는 이제껏 저에게 하신 것처럼 큰 은혜를 베푸시어 저의 목숨을 살려 주셨습니다. 그렇지만 재앙에 휩싸여 죽을까 두려워, 저 산으로는 달아날 수가 없습니다.

▶ "You have already thought enough of your servant to do me the great kindness of intervening to save my life. But I cannot flee to the hills to keep the disaster from overtaking me, and so I shall die.
|

|
보십시오, 저 성읍은 가까워 달아날 만하고 자그마한 곳입니다. 제발 그리로 달아나게 해 주십시오. 자그마하지 않습니까? 그러면 제 목숨을 살릴 수 있겠습니다.”

▶ Look, this town ahead is near enough to escape to. It's only a small place. Let me flee there - it's a small place, isn't it? - that my life may be saved."

그러자 그가 롯에게 말하였다. “좋소. 내가 이번에도 그대의 얼굴을 보아 그대가 말하는 저 성읍을 멸망시키지 않겠소.

▶ "Well, then," he replied, "I will also grant you the favor you now ask. I will not overthrow the town you speak of.
|

|
서둘러 그곳으로 달아나시오. 그대가 그곳에 다다르기 전까지는 내가 일을 하지 못하기 때문이오.” 그리하여 그 성읍을 초아르라 하였다.

|
▶ Hurry, escape there! I cannot do anything until you arrive there." That is why the town is called Zoar.

롯이 초아르에 다다르자 해가 땅 위로 솟아올랐다.

▶ The sun was just rising over the earth as Lot arrived in Zoar;

그때 주님께서 당신이 계신 곳 하늘에서 소돔과 고모라에 유황과 불을 퍼부으셨다.

▶ at the same time the LORD rained down sulphurous fire upon Sodom and Gomorrah (from the LORD out of heaven).

그리하여 그 성읍들과 온 들판과 그 성읍의 모든 주민, 그리고 땅 위에 자란 것들을 모두 멸망시키셨다.

▶ He overthrew those cities and the whole Plain, together with the inhabitants of the cities and the produce of the soil.

그런데 롯의 아내는 뒤를 돌아다보다 소금 기둥이 되어 버렸다.

▶ But Lot's wife looked back, and she was turned into a pillar of salt.

아브라함이 아침 일찍 일어나, 자기가 주님 앞에 서 있던 곳으로 가서

▶ Early the next morning Abraham went to the place where he had stood in the LORD'S presence.

|
소돔과 고모라와 그 들판의 온 땅을 내려다보니, 마치 가마에서 나는 연기처럼 그 땅에서 연기가 솟아오르고 있었다.

▶ As he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and the whole region of the Plain, he saw dense smoke over the land rising like fumes from a furnace.

하느님께서 그 들판의 성읍들을 멸망시키실 때, 아브라함을 기억하셨다. 그래서 롯이 살고 있던 성읍들을 멸망시키실 때, 롯을 그 멸망의 한가운데에서 내보내 주셨다.

▶ Thus it came to pass: when God destroyed the Cities of the Plain, he was mindful of Abraham by sending Lot away from the upheaval by which God overthrew the cities where Lot had been living.

롯은 초아르를 떠나 산으로 올라가서 자기의 두 딸과 함께 살았다. 초아르에서 사는 것이 두려웠기 때문이다. 그리하여 롯은 자기의 두 딸과 함께 굴속에서 살았다.

▶ Since Lot was afraid to stay in Zoar, he and his two daughters went up from Zoar and settled in the hill country, where he lived with his two daughters in a cave.

그때 맏딸이 작은딸에게 말하였다. “우리 아버지는 늙으셨고, 이 땅에는 세상의 풍속대로 우리에게 올 남자가 없구나.

▶ The older one said to the younger: "Our father is getting old, and there is not a man on earth to unite with us as was the custom everywhere.

|
자, 아버지에게 술을 드시게 하고 나서, 우리가 아버지와 함께 누워 그분에게서 자손을 얻자.”

|
▶ Come, let us ply our father with wine and then lie with him, that we may have offspring by our father."

|
그날 밤에 그들은 아버지에게 술을 들게 한 다음, 맏딸이 가서 아버지와 함께 누웠다. 그러나 그는 딸이 누웠다 일어난 것을 몰랐다.

▶ So that night they plied their father with wine, and the older one went in and lay with her father; but he was not aware of her lying down or her getting up.

이튿날, 맏딸이 작은딸에게 말하였다. “간밤에는 내가 아버지와 함께 누웠다. 오늘 밤에도 아버지에게 술을 드시게 하자. 그리고 네가 가서 아버지와 함께 누워라. 그렇게 해서 그분에게서 자손을 얻자.”

▶ Next day the older one said to the younger: "Last night it was I who lay with my father. Let us ply him with wine again tonight, and then you go in and lie with him, that we may both have offspring by our father."

▶ So that night, too, they plied their father with wine, and then the younger one went in and lay with him; but again he was not aware of her lying down or her getting up.

▶ The older one gave birth to a son whom she named Moab, saying, "From my father." He is the ancestor of the Moabites of today.

▶ The younger one, too, gave birth to a son, and she named him Ammon, saying, "The son of my kin." He is the ancestor of the Ammonites of today.
