▶ The LORD took note of Sarah as he had said he would; he did for her as he had promised.

사라가 임신하여, 하느님께서 아브라함에게 일러 주신 바로 그때에 늙은 아브라함에게 아들을 낳아 주었다.

▶ Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time that God had stated.

아브라함은 사라가 자기에게 낳아 준 아들의 이름을 이사악이라 하였다.

▶ Abraham gave the name Isaac to this son of his whom Sarah bore him.
|

|
아브라함은 하느님께서 자기에게 명령하신 대로, 자기 아들 이사악이 태어난 지 여드레 만에 할례를 베풀었다.

▶ When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God had commanded.
|

아브라함에게서 아들 이사악이 태어났을 때, 그의 나이는 백 살이었다.

▶ Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
|

사라가 말하였다. “하느님께서 나에게 웃음을 가져다주셨구나. 이 소식을 듣는 이마다 나한테 기쁘게 웃어 주겠지.”

▶ Sarah then said, "God has given me cause to laugh, and all who hear of it will laugh with me.
|

그리고 또 말하였다. “사라가 자식들에게 젖을 먹이리라고 누가 아브라함에게 감히 말할 수 있었으랴? 그렇지만 내가 늙은 그에게 아들을 낳아 주지 않았는가!”

▶ Who would have told Abraham," she added, "that Sarah would nurse children! Yet I have borne him a son in his old age."

|
아기가 자라서 젖을 떼게 되었다. 이사악이 젖을 떼던 날 아브라함은 큰 잔치를 베풀었다.

▶ Isaac grew, and on the day of the child's weaning, Abraham held a great feast.
|

그런데 사라는 이집트 여자 하가르가 아브라함에게 낳아 준 아들이 자기 아들 이사악과 함께 노는 것을 보고,

▶ Sarah noticed the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham playing with her son Isaac;

아브라함에게 말하였다. “저 여종과 그 아들을 내쫓으세요. 저 여종의 아들이 내 아들 이사악과 함께 상속을 받을 수는 없어요.”

▶ so she demanded of Abraham: "Drive out that slave and her son! No son of that slave is going to share the inheritance with my son Isaac!"

그 아들도 자기 아들이므로 아브라함에게는 이 일이 무척이나 언짢았다.

▶ Abraham was greatly distressed, especially on account of his son Ishmael.
|
|

|
그러나 하느님께서는 아브라함에게 말씀하셨다. “그 아이와 네 여종 때문에 언짢아하지 마라. 사라가 너에게 말하는 대로 다 들어 주어라. 이사악을 통하여 후손들이 너의 이름을 물려받을 것이다.

▶ But God said to Abraham: "Do not be distressed about the boy or about your slave woman. Heed the demands of Sarah, no matter what she is asking of you; for it is through Isaac that descendants shall bear your name.

그러나 그 여종의 아들도 네 자식이니, 내가 그도 한 민족이 되게 하겠다.”

|
|
▶ As for the son of the slave woman, I will make a great nation of him also, since he too is your offspring."
|

|
아브라함은 아침 일찍 일어나 빵과 물 한 가죽 부대를 가져다 하가르에게 주어 어깨에 메게 하고는, 그를 아기와 함께 내보냈다. 길을 나선 하가르는 브에르 세바 광야에서 헤매게 되었다.

▶ Early the next morning Abraham got some bread and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. Then, placing the child on her back, he sent her away. As she roamed aimlessly in the wilderness of Beer-sheba,

가죽 부대의 물이 떨어지자 그 여자는 아기를 덤불 밑으로 내던져 버리고는,

▶ the water in the skin was used up. So she put the child down under a shrub,

활 한 바탕 거리만큼 걸어가서 아기를 마주하고 주저앉았다. ‘아기가 죽어 가는 꼴을 어찌 보랴!’ 하고 생각하였던 것이다. 이렇게 그는 아기를 마주하고 주저앉아 목 놓아 울었다.

▶ and then went and sat down opposite him, about a bowshot away; for she said to herself, "Let me not watch to see the child die." As she sat opposite him, he began to cry.

|
하느님께서 아이의 목소리를 들으셨다. 그래서 하느님의 천사가 하늘에서 하가르를 부르며 말하였다. “하가르야, 어찌 된 일이냐? 두려워하지 마라. 하느님께서 저기에 있는 아이의 목소리를 들으셨다.

▶ God heard the boy's cry, and God's messenger called to Hagar from heaven: "What is the matter, Hagar? Don't be afraid; God has heard the boy's cry in this plight of his.

|
일어나 가서 아이를 들어 올려 네 손으로 꼭 붙들어라. 내가 그를 큰 민족으로 만들어 주겠다.”

▶ Arise, lift up the boy and hold him by the hand; for I will make of him a great nation."

|
그런 다음 하느님께서 하가르의 눈을 열어 주시니, 그가 우물을 보게 되었다. 그는 가서 가죽 부대에 물을 채우고 아이에게 물을 먹였다.

▶ Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went and filled the skin with water, and then let the boy drink.

하느님께서는 그 아이와 함께 계셨다. 그는 자라서 광야에 살며 활잡이가 되었다.

▶ God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the wilderness and became an expert bowman,

▶ with his home in the wilderness of Paran. His mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

그때 아비멜렉과 그의 군대 장수인 피콜이 아브라함에게 말하였다. “하느님께서는 그대가 무슨 일을 하든지 함께 계시는구려.

|
|
|
▶ About that time Abimelech, accompanied by Phicol, the commander of his army, said to Abraham: "God is with you in everything you do.
|

|
그러니 이제 그대는 나와 내 자식들과 내 후손들을 속이지 않고, 오히려 내가 그대에게 호의를 베푼 것처럼, 나와 그리고 그대가 나그네살이하는 이 땅을 그렇게 대해 줄 것을 여기에서 하느님을 두고 나에게 맹세해 주시오.”

▶ Therefore, swear to me by God at this place that you will not deal falsely with me or with my progeny and posterity, but will act as loyally toward me and the land in which you stay as I have acted toward you."

아브라함은 “맹세합니다.” 하고 말하였다.

▶ To this Abraham replied, "I so swear."
|
|

|
그러고 나서 아브라함은 아비멜렉의 종들이 빼앗은 우물 때문에 아비멜렉에게 따졌다.

|
▶ Abraham, however, reproached Abimelech about a well that Abimelech's men had seized by force.
|
|

|
아비멜렉이 대답하였다. “누가 그런 짓을 하였는지 나는 모르오. 그대도 나에게 말해 준 적이 없지 않소? 나는 오늘까지 그런 말을 들어 보지 못하였소.”

|
▶ "I have no idea who did that," Abimelech replied. "In fact, you never told me about it, nor did I ever hear of it until now."
|

|
그래서 아브라함이 소들과 양들을 데려다 아비멜렉에게 주고, 두 사람은 계약을 맺었다.

▶ Then Abraham took sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech and the two made a pact.
|

|
아브라함이 양 떼에서 어린 암양 일곱 마리를 따로 떼어 놓자,

|
▶ Abraham also set apart seven ewe lambs of the flock,
|
|

|
아비멜렉이 아브라함에게 물었다. “어린 암양 일곱 마리를 따로 떼어 놓은 까닭이 무엇이오?”

|
|
|
|
▶ and Abimelech asked him, "What is the purpose of these seven ewe lambs that you have set apart?"

|
아브라함이 대답하였다. “이 어린 암양 일곱 마리를 내 손에서 받으시고, 내가 이 우물을 팠다는 사실에 대하여 증인이 되어 달라는 것입니다.”

|
|
▶ Abraham answered, "The seven ewe lambs you shall accept from me that thus I may have your acknowledgment that the well was dug by me."
|

|
이렇게 그 두 사람이 거기에서 맹세를 했다고 하여, 그곳을 브에르 세바라 하였다.

|
|
|
▶ This is why the place is called Beer-sheba; the two took an oath there.
|
|

|
그들이 이렇게 브에르 세바에서 계약을 맺은 다음, 아비멜렉과 그의 군대 장수인 피콜은 일어나 필리스티아인들의 땅으로 돌아갔다.

|
|
▶ When they had thus made the pact in Beer-sheba, Abimelech, along with Phicol, the commander of his army, left and returned to the land of the Philistines.

아브라함은 브에르 세바에 에셀 나무를 심고, 그곳에서 영원한 하느님이신 주님의 이름을 받들어 불렀다.

▶ Abraham planted a tamarisk at Beer-sheba, and there he invoked by name the LORD, God the Eternal.

▶ Abraham resided in the land of the Philistines for many years.
