“주 우리 하느님께서 호렙에서 우리에게 이르셨다. ‘너희는 이 산에서 오랫동안 머물렀다.

▶ "The LORD, our God, said to us at Horeb, 'You have stayed long enough at this mountain.
|
|

|
이제 발길을 돌려 떠나라. 아모리족의 산악 지방, 그리고 그 부근의 모든 지역, 곧 아라바, 산악 지방, 평원 지대, 네겝, 해안 지대로 가거라. 가나안족의 땅, 그리고 레바논과 큰 강 유프라테스 강까지 가거라.

▶ Leave here and go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all the surrounding regions, the land of the Canaanites in the Arabah, the mountains, the foothills, the Negeb and the seacoast; to Lebanon, and as far as the Great River (the Euphrates).

▶ "At that time I said to you, 'Alone, I am unable to carry you.

주 너희 하느님께서 너희를 불어나게 하셔서, 너희가 오늘 하늘의 별처럼 많아진 것이다.

▶ The LORD, your God, has so multiplied you that you are now as numerous as the stars in the sky.

|
주 너희 조상들의 하느님께서 너희에게 이르신 대로, 너희를 천 배나 더 많게 하시고 너희에게 복을 내리시기를 빈다.

▶ May the LORD, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand times over, and bless you as he promised!

그렇지만 나 혼자서 어떻게 너희의 무거운 짐과 너희 송사를 다 떠맡을 수 있겠느냐?

▶ But how can I alone bear the crushing burden that you are, along with your bickering?

|
너희는 지파별로 지혜롭고 슬기로우며 지식을 갖춘 사람들을 뽑아라. 그러면 내가 그들을 너희의 우두머리로 세우겠다.’

▶ Choose wise, intelligent and experienced men from each of your tribes, that I may appoint them as your leaders.

그러자 너희는 ‘말씀하신 대로 하는 것이 좋겠습니다.’ 하고 나에게 대답하였다.

|
▶ You answered me, 'We agree to do as you have proposed.'
|

|
그래서 나는 너희 지파들의 우두머리들, 곧 지혜롭고 지식을 갖춘 사람들을 데려다가 너희의 우두머리로 내세워, 그들을 각 지파의 천인대장, 백인대장, 오십인대장, 십인대장으로, 그리고 관리로 삼았다.

▶ So I took outstanding men of your tribes, wise and experienced, and made them your leaders as officials over thousands, over hundreds, over fifties and over tens, and other tribal officers.

또한 그때에 나는 너희의 판관들에게 명령하였다. ‘너희 동족 사이에 문제가 생기면 잘 듣고 의롭게 재판하여라. 동족뿐 아니라 동족과 이방인 사이도 그렇게 하여라.

▶ I charged your judges at that time, 'Listen to complaints among your kinsmen, and administer true justice to both parties even if one of them is an alien.

|
너희는 재판할 때에 한쪽을 편들어서는 안 된다. 낮은 자의 말이나 높은 자의 말이나 똑같이 들어 주어라. 재판은 하느님께 속한 것이니 사람을 두려워하지 마라. 그리고 너희가 감당하기 힘든 송사는 나에게 가져오너라. 내가 그것을 들어 주겠다.’

▶ In rendering judgment, do not consider who a person is; give ear to the lowly and to the great alike, fearing no man, for judgment is God's. Refer to me any case that is too hard for you and I will hear it.'

▶ "Then, in obedience to the command of the LORD, our God, we set out from Horeb and journeyed through the whole desert, vast and fearful as you have seen, in the direction of the hill country of the Amorites. We had reached Kadesh-barnea

거기에서 내가 너희에게 말하였다. ‘너희는 주 우리 하느님께서 우리에게 주시는 아모리족의 산악 지방에 이르렀다.

▶ when I said to you, 'You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the LORD, our God, is giving us.

보아라, 주 너희 하느님께서 너희 앞에 저 땅을 내놓으셨다. 주 너희 조상들의 하느님께서 너희에게 이르신 대로 올라가서 차지하여라. 두려워하지도 말고 겁내지도 마라.’

▶ The LORD, your God, has given this land over to you. Go up and occupy it, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, commands you. Do not fear or lose heart.

그러나 너희는 모두 나에게 가까이 와서 말하였다. ‘우리보다 앞서 사람들을 보내어 저 땅을 정찰한 다음, 우리가 올라가야 할 길과 들어가야 할 성읍들에 관하여 보고하게 합시다.’

▶ Then all of you came up to me and said, 'Let us send men ahead to reconnoiter the land for us and report to us on the road we must follow and the cities we must take.'

나는 그 말이 좋게 들려서 각 지파에서 한 사람씩, 열두 사람을 뽑았다.

▶ Agreeing with the proposal, I chose twelve men from your number, one from each tribe.

그들은 발길을 돌려 산악 지방으로 올라가서, 에스콜 골짜기까지 가며 그 땅을 정탐하였다.

▶ They set out into the hill country as far as the Wadi Eshcol, and explored it.
|

|
그들은 그 땅에서 난 열매를 따 가지고 우리에게 내려와서, ‘주 우리 하느님께서 우리에게 주시는 저 땅은 좋습니다.’ 하고 보고하였다.

▶ Then, taking along some of the fruit of the land, they brought it down to us and reported, 'The land which the LORD, our God, gives us is good.'

그러나 너희는 올라가려 하지 않고, 오히려 주 너희 하느님의 분부를 거역하였다.

▶ "But you refused to go up, and after defying the command of the LORD, your God,

그러면서 너희는 천막 안에서 불평하며 말하였다. ‘주님께서 우리를 미워하셔서, 아모리족의 손에 넘겨 멸망시키시려고 우리를 이집트 땅에서 이끌어 내셨구나.

▶ you set to murmuring in your tents, 'Out of hatred for us the LORD has brought us up out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites and destroy us.

|
우리가 어디로 올라가야 한단 말인가? 우리의 형제들이 '그곳 백성은 우리보다 우람하고 키도 크다. 성읍들은 클뿐더러 하늘까지 닿는 요새로 되어 있다. 우리는 또 거기에서 아낙인들까지 보았다.' 하면서, 우리의 마음을 약하게 하지 않았는가?’

▶ What shall we meet with up there? Our kinsmen have made us fainthearted by reporting that the people are stronger and taller than we, and their cities are large and fortified to the sky; besides, they saw the Anakim there.'

그때에 내가 너희에게 말하였다. ‘그들을 무서워하지도 두려워하지도 마라.

▶ "But I said to you, 'Have no dread or fear of them.
|

|
너희 앞에 서서 가시는 주 너희 하느님께서는, 너희가 보는 앞에서 이집트에서 하신 것과 똑같이 너희를 위하여 싸워 주실 것이다.

|
▶ The LORD, your God, who goes before you, will himself fight for you, just as he took your part before your very eyes in Egypt,

너희는 마치 사람이 제 아들을 업고 다니듯, 주 너희 하느님께서 너희가 이곳에 다다를 때까지 걸어온 그 모든 길에서 줄곧 너희를 업고 다니시는 것을 광야에서 보았는데, 그 광야에서도 그렇게 싸워 주셨다.

▶ as well as in the desert, where you saw how the LORD, your God, carried you, as a man carries his child, all along your journey until you arrived at this place.'

그런데도 너희는 주 너희 하느님을 믿지 않았다.

▶ Despite this, you would not trust the LORD, your God,
|
|

|
너희가 천막을 칠 곳을 찾아 주시려고, 또 너희가 갈 길을 보여 주시려고, 밤에는 불 속에서, 낮에는 구름 속에서 앞장서 가시는 주님을 너희는 믿지 않았다.’”

“주님께서는 너희가 하는 소리를 듣고 진노하시어 이렇게 맹세하셨다.

‘이 악한 세대, 이 사람들 가운데에서는 아무도, 내가 너희 조상들에게 주기로 맹세한 좋은 땅을 보지 못할 것이다.

▶ and he swore, 'Not one man of this evil generation shall look upon the good land I swore to give to your fathers,

그러나 여푼네의 아들 칼렙만은 그 땅을 볼 것이다. 그는 주님을 충실히 따랐으므로, 나는 그가 밟은 땅을 그와 그의 아들들에게 주겠다.’

▶ except Caleb, son of Jephunneh; he shall see it. For to him and to his sons I will give the land he trod upon, because he has followed the LORD unreservedly.'

주님께서는 너희 때문에 나에게도 화를 내시면서 말씀하셨다. ‘너 또한 그곳으로 들어가지 못할 것이다.

▶ "The LORD was angered against me also on your account, and said, 'Not even you shall enter there,

너의 시중을 드는 눈의 아들 여호수아가 그곳으로 들어갈 것이다. 그가 바로 이스라엘에게 그 땅을 차지하게 해 줄 사람이니, 너는 그에게 용기를 북돋아 주어라.

▶ but your aide Joshua, son of Nun, shall enter. Encourage him, for he is to give Israel its heritage.

그리고 적의 약탈물이 되리라고 너희가 말한 너희 어린아이들과, 아직 좋고 나쁜 것을 구별할 줄 모르는 너희 자식들도 그곳으로 들어갈 것이다. 내가 그들에게 그 땅을 주어 그들이 차지할 것이다.

▶ Your little ones, who you said would become booty, and your children, who as yet do not know good from bad - they shall enter; to them I will give it, and they shall occupy it.

그러나 너희는 발길을 돌려 갈대 바다 길을 따라 광야로 떠나라.’

|
▶ But as for yourselves: turn about and proceed into the desert on the Red Sea road.'
|

그러자 너희는 나에게 말하였다. ‘우리가 주님께 죄를 지었습니다. 주 우리 하느님께서 우리에게 명령하신 대로 우리가 올라가 싸우겠습니다.’ 너희는 저마다 무기를 들고 산악 지방으로 올라가는 것을 대수롭지 않게 여겼다.

▶ "In reply you said to me, 'We have sinned against the LORD. We will go up ourselves and fight, just as the LORD, our God, commanded us.' And each of you girded on his weapons, making light of going up into the hill country.

그때에 주님께서 나에게 말씀하셨다. ‘그들에게 말하여라. ′내가 너희 가운데에 없을 것이니, 너희는 올라가지도 말고 싸우지도 마라. 그래야 너희가 적 앞에서 패배하지 않을 것이다.′’

▶ But the LORD said to me, 'Warn them: Do not go up and fight, lest you be beaten down before your enemies, for I will not be in your midst.'

|
내가 이렇게 너희에게 일렀지만 너희는 듣지 않았다. 너희는 주님의 분부를 거역하고 주제넘게 산악 지방으로 올라갔다.

▶ I gave you this warning but you would not listen. In defiance of the LORD'S command you arrogantly marched off into the hill country.

그러자 그 산악 지방에 살던 아모리족이 너희에게 마주 나와 벌 떼처럼 달려들어 너희를 내몰았다. 그들은 세이르에서 호르마까지 뒤쫓아 가며 너희를 쳤다.

▶ Then the Amorites living there came out against you and, like bees, chased you, cutting you down in Seir as far as Hormah.

|
너희는 돌아와 주님 앞에서 울었지만, 주님께서는 너희의 소리를 듣지 않으시고, 너희에게 귀를 기울이지도 않으셨다.

▶ On your return you wept before the LORD, but he did not listen to your cry or give ear to you.

그래서 너희가 그렇게 오랫동안 카데스에 머물렀던 것이다.”
