사무엘이 온 이스라엘에게 말하였다. “나는 여러분이 나에게 청한 대로 여러분의 말을 다 들어 주어, 여러분을 다스릴 임금을 세웠소.

▶ Samuel addressed all Israel: "I have granted your request in every respect," he said. "I have set a king over you

이제부터는 이 임금이 여러분을 이끌 것이오. 나는 늙어 백발이 되었고 내 아들들이 여러분과 함께 있소. 나는 젊어서부터 이날까지 여러분을 이끌어 왔소.

▶ and now the king is your leader. As for me, I am old and gray, and have sons among you. I have lived with you from my youth to the present day.

여기 내가 있으니 나를 고발할 일이 있거든, 주님 앞에서 그리고 그분의 기름부음받은이 앞에서 하시오. 내가 누구의 소를 빼앗거나 누구의 나귀를 빼앗은 일이 있소? 내가 누구를 학대하거나 억압한 일이 있소? 누구에게 뇌물을 받고 눈감아 준 일이 있소? 그런 일이 있으면 내가 여러분에게 갚아 주겠소.”

▶ Here I stand! Answer me in the presence of the LORD and of his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose ass have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whom have I accepted a bribe and overlooked his guilt? I will make restitution to you."

그들이 대답하였다. “우리를 학대하거나 억압하신 일도 없고, 누구의 손에서 무엇 하나 빼앗으신 일도 없습니다.”

▶ They replied, "You have neither cheated us, nor oppressed us, nor accepted anything from anyone."

그러자 사무엘이 그들에게 말하였다. “여러분이 내 손에서 무엇 하나 찾아내지 못하였으니, 오늘 주님께서 여러분의 증인이 되시고 그분의 기름부음받은이도 증인이 되었소.” 백성이 “예, 증인이십니다.” 하고 대답하였다.

▶ So he said to them, "The LORD is witness against you this day, and his anointed as well, that you have found nothing in my possession." "He is witness," they agreed.

사무엘이 백성에게 말하였다. “모세와 아론을 세우시고, 여러분의 조상들을 이집트 땅에서 데리고 올라오신 주님께서 증인이시오.

▶ Continuing, Samuel said to the people: "The LORD is witness, who appointed Moses and Aaron, and who brought your fathers up from the land of Egypt.
|

그러니 이제 여러분은 그대로 서 있으시오. 내가 주님께서 여러분과 여러분의 조상들에게 베푸신 의로운 업적을 모두 들어, 주님 앞에서 여러분과 시비를 가려야겠소.

▶ Now, therefore, take your stand, and I shall arraign you before the LORD, and shall recount for you all the acts of mercy the LORD has done for you and your fathers.

|
야곱이 이집트로 내려갔을 때, 여러분의 조상들이 주님께 울부짖자, 주님께서는 모세와 아론을 보내시어 이집트에서 여러분의 조상들을 이끌어 내게 하시고, 그들을 이곳에 자리 잡게 하셨소.

▶ When Jacob and his sons went to Egypt and the Egyptians oppressed them, your fathers appealed to the LORD, who sent Moses and Aaron to bring them out of Egypt, and he gave them this place to live in.

그러나 그들은 주 저희 하느님을 잊어버렸소. 그래서 주님께서는 그들을 하초르의 군대 장수 시스라의 손에, 필리스티아인들의 손에, 그리고 모압 임금의 손에 팔아넘기시어 그들을 공격하게 하셨소.

▶ But they forgot the LORD their God; and he allowed them to fall into the clutches of Sisera, the captain of the army of Jabin, king of Hazor, into the grasp of the Philistines, and into the grip of the king of Moab, who made war against them.

그러자 여러분의 조상들은 주님께 울부짖었소. ‘저희가 죄를 지었습니다. 주님을 버리고 바알과 아스타롯을 섬겼습니다. 이제 저희를 원수들의 손에서 빼내 주십시오. 저희가 당신을 섬기겠습니다.’

▶ Each time they appealed to the LORD and said, 'We have sinned in forsaking the LORD and worshiping Baals and Ashtaroth; but deliver us now from the power of our enemies, and we will worship you.'

|
그래서 주님께서는 여루빠알과 바락, 입타와 사무엘을 보내시어, 사방에서 에워싼 원수들의 손에서 여러분을 빼내 주시고, 안전하게 살 수 있게 해 주셨소.

▶ Accordingly, the LORD sent Jerubbaal, Barak, Jephthah, and Samuel; he delivered you from the power of your enemies on every side, so that you were able to live in security.

|
그런데 여러분은 암몬 자손들의 임금 나하스가 치러 오는 것을 보고, 주 여러분의 하느님께서 여러분의 임금이신데도 나에게, ‘안 되겠습니다. 아무래도 임금이 우리를 다스려야 하겠습니다.’ 하고 말하였소.

▶ Yet, when you saw Nahash, king of the Ammonites, advancing against you, you said to me, 'Not so, but a king must rule us,' even though the LORD your God is your king.

|
자, 여러분이 요구하여 뽑은 임금이 여기 있소. 주님께서 여러분에게 임금을 세워 주셨소.

|
▶ "Now you have the king you want, a king the LORD has given you.
|
|
14
|
만일 여러분이 주님을 경외하여 그분을 섬기고 그분의 말씀에 순종하며 주님의 명령을 거역하지 않으면, 여러분뿐 아니라 여러분을 다스리는 임금도 주 여러분의 하느님을 따르게 될 것이오.

|
▶ If you fear the LORD and worship him, if you are obedient to him and do not rebel against the LORD'S command, if both you and the king who rules you follow the LORD your God - well and good.
|

|
그러나 여러분이 주님의 말씀에 순종하지 않고 주님의 명령을 거역하면, 주님의 손이 여러분과 여러분의 임금을 치실 것이오.

|
▶ But if you do not obey the LORD and if you rebel against his command, the LORD will deal severely with you and your king, and destroy you.
|

|
그러므로 이제 여러분은 그대로 서서, 주님께서 여러분의 눈 앞에서 하실 이 큰일을 지켜보시오.

▶ Now then, stand ready to witness the great marvel the LORD is about to accomplish before your eyes.
|

|
지금은 밀을 거두는 때가 아니오? 그렇지만 내가 주님께 간청하여 천둥과 비를 내리시게 하겠소. 그러니 여러분은 임금을 요구한 일이 주님 보시기에 얼마나 커다란 악인지 깨달으시오.”

▶ Are we not in the harvest time for wheat? Yet I shall call to the LORD, and he will send thunder and rain. Thus you will see and understand how greatly the LORD is displeased that you have asked for a king."

|
사무엘이 주님께 간청하자, 그날로 주님께서 천둥과 비를 내리셨다. 그리하여 온 백성이 주님과 사무엘을 매우 경외하게 되었다.

▶ Samuel then called to the LORD, and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day. As a result, all the people dreaded the LORD and Samuel.

온 백성이 사무엘에게 호소하였다. “당신 종들을 위해서 주 당신의 하느님께 기도하여, 우리가 죽지 않게 해 주십시오. 사실 우리는 이미 저지른 모든 죄에다 임금을 요구하는 악까지 더하였습니다.”

▶ They said to Samuel, "Pray to the LORD your God for us, your servants, that we may not die for having added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king."

|
사무엘이 백성에게 말하였다. “두려워하지 마시오. 여러분이 이 모든 악을 저질렀지만, 이제부터라도 주님을 따르지 않고 돌아서는 일 없이, 마음을 다하여 주님을 섬기시오.

|
▶ "Do not fear," Samuel answered them. "It is true you have committed all this evil; still, you must not turn from the LORD, but must worship him with your whole heart.
|

|
여러분에게 이익도 구원도 주지 못하는 헛된 것들을 따르려고 돌아서지 마시오. 그것들은 정녕 헛된 것들이오.

|
|
▶ Do not turn to meaningless idols which can neither profit nor save; they are nothing.
|

|
주님께서는 당신의 위대하신 이름 때문에 당신 백성을 물리치지 않으실 것이오. 주님께서는 여러분을 당신 백성으로 만드시기를 원하셨소.

|
▶ For the sake of his own great name the LORD will not abandon his people, since the LORD himself chose to make you his people.

|
나 또한 여러분을 위하여 기도하기를 그치거나 하여 주님께 죄를 짓지는 않을 것이오. 그리고 나는 여러분에게 좋고 바른길을 가르쳐 주겠소.

|
▶ As for me, far be it from me to sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you and to teach you the good and right way.
|

|
여러분은 오로지 주님만을 경외하고 마음을 다하여 그분만을 충실하게 섬기시오. 그리고 주님께서 여러분에게 해 주신 위대한 일을 똑똑히 보시오.

|
▶ But you must fear the LORD and worship him faithfully with your whole heart; keep in mind the great things he has done among you.
|
|

|
그러나 만일 여러분이 여전히 악행을 일삼는다면, 여러분도 여러분의 임금도 모두 쫓겨날 것이오.”

|
▶ If instead you continue to do evil, both you and your king shall perish."
