▶ As the Philistine lords were marching their groups of a hundred and a thousand, David and his men were marching in the rear guard with Achish.

그런데 필리스티아 제후들이 “이 히브리인들은 누구요?” 하고 물었다. 아키스가 필리스티아 제후들에게 대답하였다. “이 사람은 이스라엘 임금 사울의 신하였던 다윗이지 않소? 그가 나와 함께 지낸 지 이미 한두 해가 되었지만, 나에게 망명해 온 날부터 이날까지 나는 그에게서 아무 허물도 찾지 못하였소.”

▶ The Philistine chiefs asked, "What are those Hebrews doing here?" And Achish answered them: "Why, that is David, the officer of Saul, king of Israel. He has been with me now for a year or two, and I have no fault to find with him from the day he came over to me until the present."

그러나 필리스티아 제후들은 아키스에게 화를 내며 말하였다. “그 사람을 돌려보내시오. 그는 임금께서 정해 준 곳으로 돌아가야 하오. 그가 싸움터에서 우리의 적대자가 될지도 모르니, 우리와 함께 싸움터로 내려갈 수는 없소. 이자가 무엇으로 제 주군의 환심을 사겠소? 여기 있는 군사들의 머리를 갖다 바치는 것이 아니겠소?

▶ But the Philistine chiefs were angered at this and said to him: "Send that man back! Let him return to the place you picked out for him. He must not go down into battle with us, lest during the battle he become our enemy. For how else can he win back his master's favor, if not with the heads of these men of ours?

그가 바로 사람들이 춤을 추며 ‘사울은 수천을 치셨고 다윗은 수만을 치셨다네.’ 하고 노래하던 그 다윗이 아니오?”

▶ Is this not the David of whom they sing during their dances, 'Saul has slain his thousands, but David his ten thousands'?"

그러자 아키스는 다윗을 불러 말하였다. “살아 계신 주님을 두고 맹세하는데, 그대는 올곧은 사람이오. 그대가 나에게 온 날부터 이날까지 나는 그대에게서 아무 허물도 찾지 못하였기 때문에, 그대가 나와 함께 출전하는 것이 좋겠다고 생각하였소. 그러나 다른 통치자들 눈에는 그대가 좋게 보이지 않는가 보오.

▶ So Achish summoned David and said to him: "As the LORD lives, you are honest, and I should be pleased to have you active with me in the camp, for I have found nothing wrong with you from the day of your arrival to this day. But you are not welcome to the lords.

그러니 이제 평안히 돌아가시오. 필리스티아의 통치자들 눈에 거슬리는 일은 하지 않는 것이 좋겠소.”

▶ Withdraw peaceably, now, and do nothing that might displease the Philistine lords."

다윗이 아키스에게 항의하였다. “제가 무엇을 했다는 말입니까? 임금님 앞에 나아온 날부터 이날까지 이 종에게 무슨 잘못이 있기에, 저의 주군이신 임금님의 원수들과 싸우러 나가지 못하게 하십니까?”

▶ But David said to Achish: "What have I done? Or what have you against your servant from the first day I have been with you to this day, that I cannot go to fight against the enemies of my lord the king?"

아키스가 다윗에게 대답하였다. “내 눈에는 그대가 하느님의 천사처럼 좋은 사람이오. 그 사실을 나는 알고 있소. 그러나 필리스티아 제후들이 ‘그가 우리와 함께 싸우러 나가면 안 되오.’ 하고 말하였소.

▶ "You know," Achish answered David, "that you are acceptable to me. But the Philistine chiefs have determined you are not to go up with us to battle.

그러니 그대는 그대와 함께 온 옛 주군의 부하들과 더불어 아침 일찍 일어나시오. 아침 일찍 일어나 동이 트는 대로 길을 떠나시오.”

▶ So the first thing tomorrow, you and your lord's servants who came with you, go to the place I picked out for you. Do not decide to take umbrage at this; you are as acceptable to me as an angel of God. But make an early morning start, as soon as it grows light, and be on your way."

그리하여 다윗과 부하들은 아침 일찍 일어나 필리스티아인들의 땅으로 돌아가고, 필리스티아인들은 이즈르엘로 올라갔다.

▶ So David and his men left early in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. The Philistines, however, went on up to Jezreel.
