▶ Coniah, son of Jehoiakim, was succeeded by King Zedekiah, son of Josiah; he was made king over the land of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon.

그런데 치드키야와 그의 신하들과 나라 백성은, 예레미야 예언자를 통하여 하신 주님의 말씀을 듣지 않았다.

▶ Neither he, nor his ministers, nor the people of the land would listen to the words of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah the prophet.

치드키야 임금은 셀레므야의 아들 여후칼과 마아세야의 아들 스바니야 사제를 예레미야 예언자에게 보내면서, “우리를 위하여 주 우리 하느님께 기도해 주시오.” 하고 청하였다.

▶ Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal, son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah, son of Maaseiah the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah with this request: "Pray to the LORD, our God, for us."

그때에 예레미야는 아직 감옥에 갇히지 않았기 때문에, 백성 가운데에 드나들 수 있었다.

▶ At this time Jeremiah had not yet been put into prison; he still came and went freely among the people.

▶ Also, Pharaoh's army had set out from Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard this report they marched away from the city.

▶ This word of the LORD then came to the prophet Jeremiah:

주 이스라엘의 하느님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. “나에게 물어보라고 너희를 보낸 유다 임금에게 이렇게 전하여라. ‘너희를 도우러 출동한 파라오의 군대는 제 나라 이집트로 돌아갈 것이다.

▶ Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Give this answer to the king of Judah who sent you to me to consult me: Pharaoh's army which has set out to help you will return to its own land, Egypt.

그러면 칼데아인들은 다시 돌아와 이 도성을 공격하여 점령하고 불태울 것이다.

▶ The Chaldeans shall return to the fight against this city; they shall capture it and destroy it with fire.
|

|
─ 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. ─ 너희는 칼데아인들이 너희에게서 물러갈 것이라고 하면서 너희 자신을 속이지 마라. 그들은 물러가지 않을 것이다.

▶ Thus says the LORD: Do not deceive yourselves with the thought that the Chaldeans will leave you for good, because they shall not leave!
|

|
너희를 공격하는 칼데아인들의 모든 군대를 너희가 쳐부수어 그들 가운데 부상당한 자들만 남는다 할지라도, 그들은 저마다 진지에서 일어나 이 도성을 불태울 것이다.’”

▶ Even if you were to defeat the whole Chaldean army now attacking you, and only the wounded remained, each in his tent, these would rise up and destroy the city with fire.

▶ When the Chaldean army lifted the siege of Jerusalem at the threat of the army of Pharaoh,

▶ Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem for the district of Benjamin, to take part with his family in the division of an inheritance.

그가 ‘벤야민 성문’에 이르렀을 때, 하난야의 손자이며 셀레므야의 아들로 이름이 이르이야인 수문장이 예레미야 예언자를 붙잡고, “당신은 지금 칼데아인들에게로 넘어가고 있소!” 하고 말하였다.

▶ But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin, he met the captain of the guard, a man named Irijah, son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah; he seized the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "You are deserting to the Chaldeans!"

그러자 예레미야가 “그렇지 않소. 나는 지금 칼데아인들에게로 넘어가는 것이 아니오.” 하고 말하였다. 그러나 이르이야는 예레미야의 말을 듣지 않고, 그를 붙잡아 대신들에게 데려갔다.

▶ "That is a lie!" Jeremiah answered, "I am not deserting to the Chaldeans." Without listening, Irijah kept Jeremiah in custody and brought him to the princes.

|
대신들은 예레미야에게 화를 내며 그를 때리고, 요나탄 서기관 집에 있는 구덩이에 가두었다. 사람들이 그곳을 감옥으로 만들었던 것이다.

▶ The princes were enraged, and had Jeremiah beaten and thrown into prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe, which they were using as a jail.

예레미야는 천장이 둥근 저수 동굴에 들어가, 오랫동안 그곳에 갇혀 있게 되었다.

▶ And so Jeremiah entered the vaulted dungeon, where he remained a long time.
|

치드키야 임금이 사람을 시켜 예레미야를 데려왔다. 임금은 자기 궁궐에서 그에게 은밀히 물었다. “주님께서 무슨 말씀을 하지 않으셨소?” 예레미야가 “하셨습니다.” 하고 대답하였다. 계속해서 그는 “임금님께서는 바빌론 임금의 손에 넘겨지실 것입니다.” 하고 말하였다.

▶ Once King Zedekiah had him brought to his palace and he asked him secretly whether there was any message from the LORD. Yes! Jeremiah answered: you shall be handed over to the king of Babylon.

그리고 예레미야는 치드키야 임금에게 호소하였다. “제가 임금님이나 임금님의 신하들이나 이 백성에게 무슨 잘못을 저질렀기에, 저를 감옥에 가두신 것입니까?

▶ Jeremiah then asked King Zedekiah: In what have I wronged you, or your ministers, or this people, that you should put me in prison?

‘바빌론 임금이 여러분과 이 나라를 치러 오지 않을 것이오.’ 하고 여러분에게 예언하던 예언자들은 어디 있습니까?

▶ And where are your own prophets now,
|
|

|
저의 주군이신 임금님, 제발 제 말씀을 들어 주십시오. 저의 간청을 들으시어 저를 요나탄 서기관의 집으로 보내지 말아 주십시오. 그곳에 가면 저는 죽습니다.”

|
▶ who prophesied to you that the king of Babylon would not attack you or this land? Hear now, my lord king, and grant my petition: do not send me back into the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I shall die there.

|
치드키야 임금은 사람들에게 명령을 내려, 예레미야를 경비대 울안으로 옮기고, 도성의 빵이 모두 동이 날 때까지 날마다 빵 굽는 이들의 거리에서 빵을 날라다 그에게 주도록 하였다. 그리하여 예레미야는 경비대 울안에 머무르게 되었다.

▶ King Zedekiah ordered that Jeremiah be confined in the quarters of the guard, and given a loaf of bread each day from the bakers' shop until all the bread in the city was eaten up. Thus Jeremiah remained in the quarters of the guard.
