|
About that time Judah parted from his brothers and pitched his tent near a certain Adullamite named Hirah.

▶ 그때에 유다는 형제들과 떨어져 내려와, 히라라는 이름을 지닌 아둘람 사람에게 붙어살았다.

There he met the daughter of a Canaanite named Shua, married her, and had relations with her.

|
▶ 유다는 그곳에서 수아라는 이름을 지닌 가나안 사람의 딸을 만나 아내로 삼고, 그와 한자리에 들었다.
|

She conceived and bore a son, whom she named Er.
|

|
|
|
▶ 그 여자가 임신하여 아들을 낳자, 유다는 그 이름을 에르라 하였다.
|

|
Again she conceived and bore a son, whom she named Onan.
|

|
|
|
▶ 그 여자는 또 임신하여 아들을 낳고 그 이름을 오난이라 하였다.
|

|
Then she bore still another son, whom she named Shelah. They were in Chezib when he was born.
|

|
▶ 그 여자는 다시 아들을 낳고 그 이름을 셀라라 하였다. 그가 셀라를 낳을 때 유다는 크집에 있었다.

Judah got a wife named Tamar for his first-born, Er.
|

|
|
▶ 유다는 맏아들 에르에게 아내를 얻어 주었는데, 그 이름은 타마르였다.
|

|
But Er, Judah's first-born, greatly offended the LORD; so the LORD took his life.
|

|
|
▶ 그런데 유다의 맏아들 에르는 주님께서 보시기에 악하였으므로, 주님께서 그를 죽게 하셨다.
|

|
Then Judah said to Onan, "Unite with your brother's widow, in fulfillment of your duty as brother-in-law, and thus preserve your brother's line."

▶ 그래서 유다가 오난에게 말하였다. “네 형수와 한자리에 들어라. 시동생의 책임을 다하여 네 형에게 자손을 일으켜 주어라.”

Onan, however, knew that the descendants would not be counted as his; so whenever he had relations with his brother's widow, he wasted his seed on the ground, to avoid contributing offspring for his brother.

▶ 그러나 오난은 그 자손이 자기 자손이 되지 않을 것을 알고 있었기 때문에, 형수와 한자리에 들 때마다, 형에게 자손을 만들어 주지 않으려고 그것을 바닥에 쏟아 버리곤 하였다.

What he did greatly offended the LORD, and the LORD took his life too.

|
▶ 그가 이렇게 한 것이 주님께서 보시기에 악하였으므로, 그도 죽게 하셨다.

|
Thereupon Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Stay as a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up" - for he feared that Shelah also might die like his brothers. So Tamar went to live in her father's house.

▶ 그러자 유다는 자기 며느리 타마르에게 말하였다. “내 아들 셀라가 클 때까지 너는 친정에 돌아가 과부로 살고 있어라.” 그는 ‘이 아이도 제 형들처럼 죽어서는 안 되지.’ 하고 생각하였던 것이다. 그리하여 타마르는 친정으로 돌아가 살게 되었다.

Years passed, and Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. After Judah completed the period of mourning, he went up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep, in company with his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

▶ 오랜 세월이 흐른 뒤에 수아의 딸, 유다의 아내가 죽었다. 애도 기간이 지나자, 유다는 아둘람 사람인 친구 히라와 함께 팀나로 자기 양들의 털을 깎는 이들에게 올라갔다.

When Tamar was told that her father-in-law was on his way up to Timnah to shear his sheep,

▶ 타마르는 “너의 시아버지가 자기 양들의 털을 깎으러 팀나로 올라간다.”는 말을 전해 듣고는,

|
she took off her widow's garb, veiled her face by covering herself with a shawl, and sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she was aware that, although Shelah was now grown up, she had not been given to him in marriage.

|
|
▶ 입고 있던 과부 옷을 벗고 너울을 써서 몸을 가리고, 팀나로 가는 길가에 있는 에나임 어귀에 나가 앉았다. 셀라가 이미 다 컸는데도 자기를 그의 아내로 데려가 주지 않는다는 사실을 알았기 때문이다.

|
When Judah saw her, he mistook her for a harlot, since she had covered her face.
|

|
|
▶ 유다가 그를 보았을 때, 얼굴을 가리고 있었으므로 창녀려니 생각하였다.
|

|
So he went over to her at the roadside, and not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he said, "Come, let me have intercourse with you." She replied, "What will you pay me for letting you have intercourse with me?"

|
▶ 그래서 그는 길을 벗어나 그 여자에게 가서 말하였다. “이리 오너라. 내가 너와 한자리에 들어야겠다.” 유다는 그가 자기 며느리인 줄을 몰랐던 것이다. 그러자 그 여자가 물었다. “저와 한자리에 드는 값으로 제게 무엇을 주시겠습니까?”

He answered, "I will send you a kid from the flock." "Very well," she said, "provided you leave a pledge until you send it."

▶ “내 가축 떼에서 새끼 염소 한 마리를 보내마.” 하고 그가 대답하자, 그 여자가 “그것을 보내실 때까지 담보물을 주시면 좋겠습니다.” 하고 말하였다.

Judah asked, "What pledge am I to give to you?" She answered, "Your seal and cord, and the staff you carry." So he gave them to her and had intercourse with her, and she conceived by him.

▶ 그래서 유다가 “너에게 무슨 담보물을 주랴?” 하고 묻자, 그 여자가 “어르신네의 인장과 줄, 그리고 손에 잡고 계신 지팡이면 됩니다.” 하고 대답하였다. 그래서 유다는 그것들을 주고 그와 한자리에 들었다. 그는 유다의 아이를 가지게 되었다.

When she went away, she took off her shawl and put on her widow's garb again.

Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adullamite to recover the pledge from the woman; but he could not find her.

▶ 유다는 자기 친구 아둘람 사람 편에 새끼 염소 한 마리를 보내면서, 그 여자에게서 담보물을 찾아오게 하였으나, 그는 그 여자를 찾지 못하였다.

So he asked the men of the place, "Where is the temple prostitute, the one by the roadside in Enaim?" But they answered, "There has never been a temple prostitute here."

▶ 그가 그곳 사람들에게 “에나임 길 가에 있던 신전 창녀가 어디 있습니까?” 하고 묻자, “여기에는 신전 창녀가 없습니다.” 하고 대답하였다.

He went back to Judah and told him, "I could not find her; and besides, the men of the place said there was no temple prostitute there."

▶ 그는 유다에게 돌아가 말하였다. “그 여자를 찾지 못했네. 그리고 그곳 사람들이 ‘여기에는 신전 창녀가 없습니다.’ 하더군.”

"Let her keep the things," Judah replied; "otherwise we shall become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her the kid, even though you were unable to find her."

▶ 유다가 말하였다. “가질테면 가지라지. 우리야 창피만 당하지 않으면 되니까. 보다시피 내가 이 새끼 염소 한 마리를 보냈는데, 자네가 그 여자를 찾지 못한 게 아닌가?”

About three months later, Judah was told that his daughter-in-law Tamar had played the harlot and was then with child from her harlotry. "Bring her out," cried Judah; "she shall be burned."

|
▶ 석 달쯤 지난 뒤, 유다는 “그대의 며느리 타마르가 창녀 노릇을 했다네. 더군다나 창녀질을 하다 임신까지 했다네.” 하는 말을 전해 들었다. 유다가 명령하였다. “그를 끌어내어 화형에 처하여라.”

But as they were bringing her out, she sent word to her father-in-law, "It is by the man to whom these things belong that I am with child. Please verify," she added, "whose seal and cord and whose staff these are."

▶ 밖으로 끌려 나오게 된 타마르는 자기의 시아버지에게 전갈을 보냈다. “저는 이 물건 임자의 아이를 배었습니다.” 그는 또 말하였다. “이 인장과 줄과 지팡이가 누구 것인지 살펴보십시오.”

|
Judah recognized them and said, "She is more in the right than I am, since I did not give her to my son Shelah." But he had no further relations with her.

▶ 유다가 그것들을 살펴보다 말하였다. “그 애가 나보다 더 옳다! 내가 그 애를 내 아들 셀라에게 아내로 주지 않았기 때문이다.” 유다는 그 뒤 다시는 그를 가까이하지 않았다.

|
When the time of her delivery came, she was found to have twins in her womb.

▶ 타마르가 해산할 때가 되었는데, 그의 태 안에는 쌍둥이가 들어 있었다.

|
While she was giving birth, one infant put out his hand; and the midwife, taking a crimson thread, tied it on his hand, to note that this one came out first.
|

|
▶ 그가 해산할 때, 한 아기가 손을 내밀었다. 산파가 붉은 실을 가져다가 그 손에 매고서, “얘가 먼저 나온 녀석이다.” 하고 말하였다.

But as he withdrew his hand, his brother came out; and she said, "What a breach you have made for yourself!" So he was called Perez.

▶ 그러나 그 아기가 손을 도로 집어넣고, 그의 동기가 나오니, 산파는 “아니, 네가 틈을 비집고 나오다니!” 하고 말하였다. 그래서 그 이름을 페레츠라 하였다.

Afterward his brother came out; he was called Zerah.

▶ 그다음 그의 동기 곧 손에 붉은 실을 매단 아기가 나오자, 그 이름을 제라라 하였다.
