Afterward Nahash, king of the Ammonites, died and his son succeeded him as king.

▶ 그 뒤에 암몬 자손들의 임금 나하스가 죽자, 그의 아들이 그 뒤를 이어 임금이 되었다.

|
David said, "I will show kindness to Hanun, the son of Nahash, for his father treated me with kindness." Therefore he sent envoys to him to comfort him over the death of his father. But when David's servants had entered the land of the Ammonites to comfort Hanun,

▶ 다윗은 ‘하눈의 아버지 나하스가 나에게 자애를 베풀었으니, 나도 그의 아들 하눈에게 자애를 베풀어야겠다.’ 하고 생각하였다. 그래서 다윗은 사절들을 보내어, 그의 아버지에 대한 조의를 표하고자 하였다. 다윗의 신하들이 하눈에게 조의를 표하려고 암몬 자손들의 땅에 들어가자,

the Ammonite princes said to Hanun, "Do you think David is doing this - sending you these consolers - to honor your father? Have not his servants rather come to you to explore the land, spying it out for its overthrow?"

▶ 암몬 자손의 장수들이 하눈에게 말하였다. “다윗이 조문 사절들을 보냈다 해서, 임금님께서는 그가 부왕께 경의를 표하는 것으로 보십니까? 이 땅을 샅샅이 살펴서 뒤엎으려고 그의 신하들이 염탐하러 온 것이 아니겠습니까?”

Thereupon Hanun seized David's servants and had them shaved and their garments cut off half-way at the hips. Then he sent them away.

▶ 그래서 하눈은 다윗의 신하들을 붙잡아 수염을 깎아 버리고, 예복도 엉덩이 부분까지 절반씩 잘라 낸 뒤에 돌려보냈다.

When David was informed of what had happened to his men, he sent messengers to meet them, for the men had been greatly disgraced. "Remain at Jericho," the king told them, "until your beards have grown again; and then you may come back here."

▶ 그들이 돌아오는데, 사람들이 이들에 관하여 다윗에게 보고하였다. 임금은 그들이 심한 모욕을 당하였으므로 사람을 보내어, “그대들의 수염이 다 자랄 때까지 예리코에 머물러 있다가 돌아오시오.” 하고 말하였다.

When the Ammonites realized that they had put themselves in bad odor with David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen from Aram Naharaim, from Aram-maacah, and from Zobah.

▶ 암몬 자손들은 자기들이 다윗에게 미움을 사게 된 것을 알았다. 그래서 하눈과 암몬 자손들은 은 천 탈렌트를 보내어, 아람 나하라임과 아람 마아카와 초바에서 병거와 기병들을 고용하였다.

They hired thirty-two thousand chariots along with the king of Maacah and his army, who came and encamped before Medeba. The Ammonites also assembled from their cities and came out for war.

▶ 또 병거 삼만 이천 대, 그리고 마아카 임금과 그의 군대도 고용하였다. 그들은 메드바 앞에 와서 진을 쳤다. 암몬 자손들도 싸우려고 저희 성읍들에서 모여 왔다.

When David heard of this, he sent Joab and his whole army of warriors against them.

▶ 다윗이 이 소식을 듣고 용사들로 이루어진 부대 전체를 요압과 함께 보냈다.

The Ammonites marched out and lined up for a battle at the gate of the city, while the kings who had come to their help remained apart in the open field.

|
▶ 그러자 암몬 자손들이 밖으로 나와 성읍 어귀에서 전열을 갖추고, 그들을 도우러 온 임금들도 따로 들판에 전열을 갖추었다.

When Joab saw that there was a battle line both in front of and behind him, he chose some of the best fighters among the Israelites and set them in array against the Arameans;

▶ 요압은 전선이 자신을 상대로 앞뒤에 배치되어 있는 것을 보고, 이스라엘의 모든 정병 가운데에서 일부를 골라 아람인들에게 맞서 전열을 갖추게 하였다.

the rest of the army, which he placed under the command of his brother Abishai, then lined up to oppose the Ammonites.

|
▶ 그리고 나머지 군사들은 동생 아비사이의 손에 맡겨, 암몬 자손들에게 맞서 전열을 갖추게 하였다.

|
And he said: "If the Arameans prove too strong for me, you must come to my help; and if the Ammonites prove too strong for you, I will save you.
|

|
▶ 그런 다음에 요압이 말하였다. “만일 아람인들이 나보다 강하면 네가 나를 도와야 한다. 암몬 자손들이 너보다 강하면 내가 너를 돕겠다.

|
Hold steadfast and let us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and the cities of our God; then may the LORD do what seems best to him."

▶ 용기를 내어라. 우리 백성을 위해서, 우리 하느님의 성읍들을 위해서 용기를 내자. 주님께서는 당신 보시기에 좋은 일을 이루실 것이다.”

Joab therefore advanced with his men to engage the Arameans in battle; but they fled before him.
|

|
|
▶ 그러고 나서 요압과 그의 군대가 싸우러 아람인들 앞으로 나아가니, 아람인들은 요압 앞에서 도망쳤다.
|
|

|
And when the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they also took to flight before his brother Abishai, and reentered the city. Joab then returned to Jerusalem.

|
|
▶ 아람인들이 도망치는 것을 본 암몬 자손들도 그의 아우 아비사이 앞에서 도망쳐 성읍으로 들어갔다. 그러자 요압은 예루살렘으로 돌아왔다.

Seeing themselves vanquished by Israel, the Arameans sent messengers to bring out the Arameans from the other side of the River, with Shophach, the general of Hadadezer's army, at their head.

|
▶ 아람인들은 자기들이 이스라엘에게 패배한 것을 보고 사절들을 보내어, 하닷에제르 군대의 장수 소팍의 지휘 아래 강 건너에 있는 아람인들을 출전시켰다.

|
When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel together, crossed the Jordan, and met them. With the army of David drawn up to fight the Arameans, they gave battle.

▶ 이 소식을 들은 다윗도 온 이스라엘을 소집하여 요르단을 건너가서, 그들을 향하여 전열을 갖추었다. 다윗이 아람인들에게 맞서 전열을 갖추니, 그들이 그와 싸웠다.

But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David slew seven thousand of their chariot fighters and forty thousand of their foot soldiers; he also killed Shophach, the general of the army.
|

▶ 그러다가 아람인들이 이스라엘 앞에서 도망쳤다. 다윗은 아람인들의 병거병 칠천 명과 보병 사만 명을 죽이고, 그 군대의 장수 소팍도 죽였다.

When the vassals of Hadadezer saw themselves vanquished by Israel, they made peace with David and became his subjects. After this, the Arameans refused to come to the aid of the Ammonites.

|
▶ 하닷에제르의 신하들은 자기들이 이스라엘에게 패배한 것을 보고, 다윗과 화친한 뒤에 다윗을 섬겼다. 그리고 아람인들은 더 이상 암몬 자손들을 도우려 하지 않았다.
