Mordecai Refuses to Honor Haman

After these events King Ahasuerus raised Haman, son of Hammedatha the Agagite, to high rank, seating him above all his fellow officials.

▶ 이런 일들이 있은 뒤, 크세르크세스 임금은 아각 사람 함므다타의 아들 하만을 중용하였는데, 그를 들어 올려 자기 곁에 있는 모든 대신들보다 높은 자리에 앉혔다.

All the king's servants who were at the royal gate would kneel and bow down to Haman, for that is what the king had ordered in his regard. Mordecai, however, would not kneel and bow down.

|
▶ 궁궐 대문에서 근무하는 임금의 모든 시종들이 하만 앞에서 무릎을 꿇고 절을 해야 하였으니, 임금이 그렇게 명령하였기 때문이다. 그러나 모르도카이는 무릎을 꿇으려고도 절을 하려고도 하지 않았다.

The king's servants who were at the royal gate said to Mordecai, "Why do you disobey the king's order?"

▶ 그러자 궁궐 대문에서 근무하는 임금의 시종들이 모르도카이에게, “자네는 왜 임금님의 명령을 거역하는가?” 하고 말하였다.

When they had reminded him day after day and he would not listen to them, they informed Haman, to see whether Mordecai's explanation was acceptable, since he had told them that he was a Jew.

▶ 그들이 그에게 날마다 권하였지만 모르도카이는 끝내 듣지 않았다. 그래서 그들은, 자기는 유다 사람이라고 하는 모르도카이의 말이 얼마나 오래가는지 보려고 하만에게 보고하였다.

When Haman observed that Mordecai would not kneel and bow down to him, he was filled with anger.

▶ 하만은 모르도카이가 무릎을 꿇지도 절을 하지도 않는 것을 보고 노기로 가득 찼다.

Haman's Reprisal

Moreover, he thought it was not enough to lay hands on Mordecai alone. Since they had told Haman of Mordecai's nationality, he sought to destroy all the Jews, Mordecai's people, throughout the realm of King Ahasuerus.

▶ 그러나 모르도카이 하나만 해치우는 것으로는 눈에 차지 않았다. 모르도카이가 어느 민족인지가 자기에게 보고되자, 하만은 크세르크세스 왕국 전역에 있는 유다인들을 모두 몰살하려고 꾀하였다.

In the first month, Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, the pur, or lot, was cast in Haman's presence to determine the day and the month for the destruction of Mordecai's people on a single day, and the lot fell on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, Adar.

▶ 크세르크세스 임금 제십이년 첫째 달인 니산 달에 하만이 자기 앞에서 푸르 곧 주사위를 각 날과 각 달에 따라 던지게 하니, 열두째 달인 아다르 달이 나왔다.

Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus: "Dispersed among the nations throughout the provinces of your kingdom, there is a certain people living apart, with laws differing from those of every other people. They do not obey the laws of the king, and so it is not proper for the king to tolerate them.

▶ 그래서 하만은 크세르크세스 임금에게 말하였다. “임금님 왕국의 모든 주에는 민족들 사이에 흩어져 있으면서도 저희들끼리만 떨어져 사는 민족이 하나 있습니다. 그들의 법은 다른 모든 민족들의 법과는 다를 뿐만 아니라, 임금님의 법마저도 그들은 지키지 않습니다. 그들을 이대로 내버려 두시는 것은 임금님께 합당치 못합니다.

If it please the king, let a decree be issued to destroy them; and I will deliver to the procurators ten thousand silver talents for deposit in the royal treasury."

▶ 임금님께서 좋으시다면, 그들을 절멸시키라는 글을 내리시기 바랍니다. 그러면 저는 은 일만 탈렌트를 달아서 행정관들 손에 넘겨 내탕고에 들여놓게 하겠습니다.”

Decree against the Jews

The king took the signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman, son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.

▶ 그러자 임금은 인장 반지를 손에서 빼어, 아각 사람 함므다타의 아들, 유다인들의 적 하만에게 건네주었다.

"The silver you may keep," the king said to Haman, "but as for this people, do with them whatever you please."
|

|
▶ 그리고 임금은 하만에게 말하였다. “은은 그대 차지요. 이 민족도 그대가 좋을 대로 처리하시오.”

So the royal scribes were summoned; and on the thirteenth day of the first month they wrote, at the dictation of Haman, an order to the royal satraps, the governors of every province, and the officials of every people, to each province in its own script and to each people in its own language. It was written in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed with the royal signet ring.

▶ 그리하여 첫째 달 열사흗날에 임금의 서기들이 불려 가 모든 것을 하만이 명령하는 대로 써서, 임금의 총독들과 각 주를 관장하는 지방관들과 각 민족의 대신들에게 보내는 문서를 각 주의 글과 각 민족의 말로 작성하였다. 그 문서는 크세르크세스 임금의 이름으로 작성되어 임금의 반지로 봉인되었다.

Letters were sent by couriers to all the royal provinces, that all the Jews, young and old, including women and children, should be killed, destroyed, wiped out in one day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, Adar, and that their goods should be seized as spoil.

▶ 그런 다음 파발꾼들 편으로 임금의 각 주에 서신이 발송되었다. 아이와 여자 할 것 없이 어린이에서 노인에 이르기까지 모든 유다인들을 열두째 달인 아다르 달 열사흗날 한날에 파멸시키고 죽여서 절멸시키고 그들의 재산을 몰수하라는 것이었다.

When I came to rule many peoples and to hold sway over the whole world, I determined not to be carried away with the sense of power, but always to deal fairly and with clemency; to provide for my subjects a life of complete tranquillity; and by making my government humane and effective as far as the borders, to restore the peace desired by all men.

▶ 과인은 수많은 민족들을 지배하고 온 세계를 통치하게 되었지만, 권력의 오만함으로 방자하게 되지 아니하고 오히려 항상 더욱 온화하고 관대하게 다스려, 신민들의 삶을 모든 면에서 어떠한 소란도 없이 안정시키고, 왕국을 그 경계선 끝까지 평온하고 마음대로 다닐 수 있게 만들어 모든 사람이 열망하는 평화를 회복하리라 결심한 바 있습니다.

When I consulted my counselors as to how this might be accomplished, Haman, who excels among us in wisdom, who is outstanding for constant devotion and steadfast loyalty, and who has gained the second rank in the kingdom,

brought it to our attention that, mixed in with all the races throughout the world, there is one people of bad will, which by its laws is opposed to every other people and continually disregards the decrees of kings, so that the unity of empire blamelessly designed by us cannot be established.

▶ 적대적인 백성 하나가 이 땅의 모든 부족들 사이에 섞여 살고 있는데, 자기들의 법으로 모든 민족들을 거스르고 임금들의 명령을 끊임없이 배척하여, 우리가 흠잡을 데 없이 수행하고 있는 통치가 정립되지 못하게 하고 있다는 사실을 지적해 주었습니다.

"Having noted, therefore, that this most singular people is continually at variance with all men, lives by divergent and alien laws, is inimical to our interests, and commits the worst crimes, so that stability of government cannot be obtained,

▶ 이제 우리는, 이 백성이 혼자서 유별나게 모든 사람과 끊임없이 적대 관계를 이루면서 자기네 법에 따라 기이한 생활 방식으로 떨어져 살며, 우리 일에 나쁜 감정을 품고 극악한 짓들을 저질러, 왕국의 안전을 위협하기에 이르렀다는 사실을 깨닫게 되었습니다.

we hereby decree that all those who are indicated to you in the letters of Haman, who is in charge of the administration and is a second father to us, shall, together with their wives and children, be utterly destroyed by the swords of their enemies, without any pity or mercy, on the fourteenth day of the twelfth month, Adar, of the current year;

so that when these people, whose present ill will is of long standing, have gone down into the nether world by a violent death on a single day, they may at last leave our affairs stable and undisturbed for the future."

A copy of the decree to be promulgated as law in every province was published to all the peoples, that they might be prepared for that day.

The couriers set out in haste at the king's command; meanwhile, the decree was promulgated in the stronghold of Susa. The king and Haman then sat down to feast, but the city of Susa was thrown into confusion.

▶ 파발꾼들은 임금의 분부를 받고 급히 달려 나갔다. 어명은 수사 왕성에도 선포되었다. 임금과 하만은 술자리를 가졌지만, 수사 성읍은 혼란에 빠졌다.
