Desire not a brood of worthless children, nor rejoice in wicked offspring.

▶ 쓸모없는 자식이 많기를 바라지 말고 불경한 아들들로 기뻐하지 마라.

|
Many though they be, exult not in them if they have not the fear of the LORD.

▶ 그들이 주님을 경외하지 않는다면 그들이 불어나더라도 기뻐하지 마라.
|

|
Count not on their length of life, have no hope in their future. For one can be better than a thousand; rather die childless than have godless children!

|
▶ 그들이 오래 살리라 믿지 말고 그들이 많다고 과신하지 마라. 너는 때 아닌 슬픔으로 괴로워할 것이고 그들의 갑작스러운 죽음을 보게 되리라. 자녀 하나가 천 명보다 나을 수 있고 자식 없이 죽는 것이 불경한 자녀 여럿을 두는 것보다 나으리라.

Through one wise man can a city be peopled; through a clan of rebels it becomes desolate.

▶ 지각 있는 사람 하나로 한 도시가 번창하지만 무도한 가문 하나로 그 도시가 황폐하게 되리라.

Many such things has my eye seen, even more than these has my ear heard.

▶ 내 눈으로 그런 일을 많이 보아 왔고 내 귀로 그보다 더한 일을 들어 왔다.

Against a sinful band fire is enkindled, upon a godless people wrath flames out.

▶ 죄인들이 모인 자리에 불길이 타오르고 반역하는 민족에게 진노가 타오른다.

|
He forgave not the leaders of old who rebelled long ago in their might;

▶ 그분께서는 자신들의 힘을 믿고 반역을 일으킨 고대의 거인들을 용서하지 않으셨다.
|
|

|
He spared not the neighbors of Lot whom he detested for their pride;
|

|
▶ 그분께서는 롯의 고장 사람들을 참아 주지 않으셨는데 그들이 자신들의 오만 때문에 그분을 역겹게 한 탓이다.
|

|
Nor did he spare the doomed people who were uprooted because of their sin;

|
▶ 그분께서는 자신들의 죄악으로 내쫓긴 멸망의 족속에게 자비를 베풀지 않으셨다. 그분께서는 완고한 민족들에게 이 모든 일을 하셨고 당신의 수많은 성도들에게서도 위로를 받지 못하셨다.

Nor the six hundred thousand foot soldiers who perished for the impiety of their hearts.

▶ 이렇게 그분께서는 완고한 마음으로 뭉친 육십만 장정에게도 자비를 베풀지 않으셨다. 주님께서는 채찍을 드시고 자비를 베푸시고 때리고 치유하시면서 자비심과 규율로 사람들을 지켜 주셨다.

And had there been but one stiffnecked man, it were a wonder had he gone unpunished. For mercy and anger alike are with him who remits and forgives, though on the wicked alights his wrath.

▶ 목이 뻣뻣한 자가 하나라도 있을 때 그가 벌받지 않는다면 이상한 일이다. 사실 그분께는 자비와 분노가 있으니 그분께서는 용서도 잘하시고 진노도 내리신다.

Great as his mercy is his punishment; he judges men, each according to his deeds.

▶ 그분께서는 자비가 크신 만큼 질책도 많이 하신다. 그분께서는 사람을 제 행실에 따라 심판하신다.

A criminal does not escape with his plunder; a just man's hope God does not leave unfulfilled.

▶ 죄인은 장물을 가지고 달아나지 못한다. 경건한 이의 인내는 결코 헛되지 않으리라.

Whoever does good has his reward, which each receives according to his deeds.

▶ 그분께서는 모든 자선에 자리를 마련해 주시니 누구나 제 행실에 따라 자기 몫을 얻는다.

Say not: "I am hidden from God; in heaven who remembers me? Among so many people I cannot be known; what am I in the world of spirits?

▶ 주님께서는 당신을 알아보지 못하도록 파라오의 마음을 완고하게 하시어 당신의 위업이 하늘 아래 알려지게 하셨다.

Behold, the heavens, the heaven of heavens, the earth and the abyss tremble at his visitation;

▶ “내가 주님을 떠나 숨어 있으니 저 높은 곳에서 누가 나를 기억하리오? 내가 수많은 군중 속에 있으니 무수한 피조물 가운데 나는 누구인지 드러나지 않으리라.” 하고 말하지 마라.

Of me, therefore, he will take no thought; with my ways who will concern himself?

▶ 보라, 하늘과 하늘 위의 하늘을! 심연과 땅이 그분의 오심으로 떨게 되리라. 과거와 현재의 온 세계가 그분의 뜻에 달려 있다.

If I sin, no eye will see me; if all in secret I am disloyal, who is to know?

▶ 그분께서 산과 땅의 기초를 내려다보시면 그것들이 다 함께 떨며 뒤흔들리리라.

Who tells him of just deeds and what could I expect for doing my duty?"

▶ 그러나 인간의 마음은 이런 일을 생각지 않으니 누가 그분의 길을 깊이 헤아릴 수 있겠느냐?

Such are the thoughts of senseless men, which only the foolish knave will think.

▶ 폭풍이 사람 눈에 보이지 않듯이 그분의 위업도 대부분 감추어져 있다.

Hearken to me, my son, take my advice, apply your mind to my words,

▶ “누가 의로운 위업을 선포하리오? 누가 참고 기다리리오? 그분의 계약은 멀리 있고 모든 이에 대한 철저한 조사는 마지막에야 이루어지는데!”

While I propose measured wisdom, and impart accurate knowledge.
