▶ Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.

나는 포도나무요 너희는 가지다. 내 안에 머무르고 나도 그 안에 머무르는 사람은 많은 열매를 맺는다. 너희는 나 없이 아무것도 하지 못한다.

내 안에 머무르지 않으면 잘린 가지처럼 밖에 던져져 말라 버린다. 그러면 사람들이 그런 가지들을 모아 불에 던져 태워 버린다.

▶ Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned.

너희가 내 안에 머무르고 내 말이 너희 안에 머무르면, 너희가 원하는 것은 무엇이든지 청하여라. 너희에게 그대로 이루어질 것이다.

나는 너희를 더 이상 종이라고 부르지 않는다. 종은 주인이 하는 일을 모르기 때문이다. 나는 너희를 친구라고 불렀다. 내가 내 아버지에게서 들은 것을 너희에게 모두 알려 주었기 때문이다.

▶ I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.

너희가 나를 뽑은 것이 아니라 내가 너희를 뽑아 세웠다. 너희가 가서 열매를 맺어 너희의 그 열매가 언제나 남아 있게 하려는 것이다. 그리하여 너희가 내 이름으로 아버지께 청하는 것을 그분께서 너희에게 주시게 하려는 것이다.

너희가 세상에 속한다면 세상은 너희를 자기 사람으로 사랑할 것이다. 그러나 너희가 세상에 속하지 않을 뿐만 아니라 내가 너희를 세상에서 뽑았기 때문에, 세상이 너희를 미워하는 것이다.

‘종은 주인보다 높지 않다.’고 내가 너희에게 한 말을 기억하여라. 사람들이 나를 박해하였으면 너희도 박해할 것이고, 내 말을 지켰으면 너희 말도 지킬 것이다.
