간략히 말한다면 그리스도인과 세상과의 관계는 영혼과 육체와의 관계와 같습니다. 영혼이 육체의 모든 부분에 퍼져있는 것처럼 그리스도인들도 세상의 모든 지역에 퍼져있습니다. 영혼은 육체에서 살아도 육체에서 비롯되지 않습니다. 그리스도인도 세상에서 살지만 세상에서 비롯되지 않습니다.

Ut autem simpliciter dicam: quod est in corpore anima, hoc sunt in mundo christiani. Dispersa est per omnia corporis menbra anima; et christiani per mundi civitates. Habitat quidam in corpore anima, sed non est e corpore; et christiani in mundo habitant, sed non est e mundo.

To speak in general terms, we may say that the Christian is to the world what the soul is to the body. As the soul is present in every part of the body, while remaining distinct from it, so Christians are found in all the cities of the world, but cannot be identified with the world.

영혼이 자기를 미워하는 육체와 그 지체들을 사랑하는 것처럼 그리스도인들도 역시 자기를 미워하는 이들을 사랑합니다. 영혼은 육신 안에 갇혀있지만 육신을 떠받들고 있습니다. 그리스도인들은 감옥에서처럼 이 세상 안에 갇혀있지만 그들은 이 세상을 떠받들고 있습니다. 불사 불멸의 본성을 지닌 영혼은 멸하고야 마는 장막 안에 살고 있습니다. 그리스도인들도 부패해야 하는 것 가운데서 순례하지만, 천상의 불사 불멸을 기대합니다. 영혼은 음식과 음료에서 박해를 받을 때 좋아집니다. 그리스도인들은 학대와 고초를 당함으로써 매일매일 수효가 늘어갑니다. 하느님께서 그들을 이렇게 높은 지위로 들어 올리셨으므로 그 고귀한 지위에서 이탈하는 것은 옳지 않습니다.

Anima carnem amat, quae ipsam odit, et membra; et christiani osores amant. Inclusa quidem est anima corpore, sed ipsa continet corpus; et christiani detinentur quidem in mundo tamquam in custodia, sed ipsi continent mundum. Immortalis anima in mortali tabernaculo habitat; et christiani peregrinantur incorruptibilibus, caelestem incorruptabilitatem expectantes. Anima cibis et potionibus male tractata fit melior; et christiani suppliciis affecti cotidie numero crescunt. In tanta eos statione posuit Deus, quam nepas est iis defugere.

Christians love those who hate them just as the soul loves the body and all its members despite the body’s hatred. It is by the soul, enclosed within the body, that the body is held together, and similarly, it is by the Christians, detained in the world as in a prison, that the world is held together. The soul, though immortal, has a mortal dwelling place; and Christians also live for a time amidst perishable things, while awaiting the freedom from change and decay that will be theirs in heaven. As the soul benefits from the deprivation of food and drink, so Christians flourish under persecution. Such is the Christian’s lofty and divinely appointed function, from which he is not permitted to excuse himself.
