책소개

책의 목표는 서양의 첫 번째 음악기록을 연구하는 것이다. 이 첫 기록이 등장한 것은 9세기로 그레고리오성가의 필사본에서였다. 이것은 라틴어 텍스트 바로 위에 상징기호의 형태로 기록되어 있었다. “네우마”라고 불리는 이 기호는 동반하는 텍스트와 밀접한 관련이 있다. 이 기록은 단지 한번 보면서 멜로디를 그대로 연주할 수는 없지만, 연주를 할 수 있도록 가이드 역할을 한다. 즉, 구전된 노래를 부를 수 있도록 그 뉘앙스들을 기록하고 있는 것이다.

 

이 네우마들의 기호들은 놀라울 정도로 정교하게 만들어져 있다. 또한 매우 다양하고, 지역에 따라 차이가 있다. 같은 종류의 네우마 기록을 보이는 필사본들은 각각 개별적인 계보로 재분류 되었다. 그 기보법의 계보는 그 수가 매우 많고, 거의 오늘날의 유럽 영토와 비슷한 샤를르마뉴 제국 전역에 퍼져있었는데, 명료하게 구별되어 13세기말까지 혹은 15세기까지 사용되어져 오다가, 대부분의 이 표기법들은 4선 위에 사각형의 음을 기록하는 단일 표기체제로 진보된다.

 

기보법 필사본의 해독은 세가지 기초과학에 존하게 되는데, 그레고리오성가 기호학, 음악 고문서학과 중세 필사본학이 그것이다. 기호학은 주로 네우마 기호의 분석에 역점을 두고, 고문자 연구는 노래를 옮겨 적기 위해 중세의 필사가들이 사용했던 다양한 음표기록 체제에 관심을 두며, 필사본학 연구는 필사본 그 자체와 라틴어 문서 기록에 중점을 둔다. 이 모든 학문들이 어우러져 기보법의 체제를 이해하도록 돕는다. 또한 이들은 음악기록을 넘어 로마 시대 제례의 성가 연구를 향해 나아가도록 돕는다.
