헨리 나웬 신부님(1932-1996)의 오 ! 그리고 늘 ! 2월 19일 <평안을 떠받치는 터전이라는 것> The Basis of Our Security 우리의 평안을 떠받치는 터전은 무엇일까요? 이 물음을 곰곰히 생각하면 이런 답들이 떠오를 수 있습니다. 성공, 돈, 친구, 재산, 평판, 가족, 인맥, 보험 등 많을 겁니다. 이런 것들이 평안을 떠받쳐 준다고 늘 생각하진 않지만 행동이나 감정으로는 다르게 나타납니다. 돈이나, 친구 또는 평판이 없어지면서 걱정하는 걸 보면 우리가 얼마나 이런 것들을 평안을 떠받치는 걸로 생각하는지 드러납니다. 영성으로 산다는 건 평안을 떠받치는 터전을 아무리 좋은 것일지라도 여느 피조물이 아니라 영원한 사랑이신 하느님으로 모시며 살아가는 겁 니다. 아마 우리는 덧없는 이 세상 것들의 멍에에서 완전히 벗어날 수는 없을 겁니다. 그럴지라도 이 세상에서 짜장 자유로이 살아가려면 이 세상 것들로부터 벗어나는 게 좋을 겁니다. “너희는 하느님과 재물을 함께 섬길 수 없다”(루카16,13). The Basis of Our Security FEBRUARY 19 What is the basis of our security? When we start thinking about that question, we may give many answers: success, money, friends, property, popularity, family, connections, insurance, and so on. We may not always think that any of these forms the basis of our security, but our actions or feelings may tell us otherwise. When we start losing our money, our friends, or our popularity, our anxiety often reveals how deeply our sense of security is rooted in these things. A spiritual life is a life in which our security is based not in any created things, good as they may be, but in God, who is everlasting love. We probably will never be completely free from our attachment to the temporal world, but if we want to live in that world in a truly free way, we’d better not belong to it. “You cannot be the slave both of God and of money” (Luke 16:13).   † 성부와 성자와 성령의 이름으로 아멘.
