헨리 나웬  신부님(1932.1.24-1996.9.21)의 오! 그리고 늘 ! 12월 16일 <사랑을 거부할 자유라는 것> The Freedom to Refuse Love 흔히 지옥은 형벌을 받고 천당은 보상을 받는 곳으로 그려집니다. 이런 개념때문에 하느님을 우리가 잘못을 저지르면 체포하고 잘못이 너무 크면 감옥에 보내려 하는 경찰이나 또는 연말이면 모든 선행을 헤아려 양말 속에 선물을 넣어 보상하는 산타클로스로 생각하는 겁니다. 하느님께서는 경찰도 산타클로스도 아닙니다. 하느님께서는 얼마나 자주 복종하거나 거역하느냐에 따라 우리를 천당이나 지옥으로 보내시는 분이 아니십니다. 하느님께서는 사랑이시며 오로지 사랑뿐이십니다. 하느님께는 미움도, 복수심도 없으시고, 우리가 벌 받는 걸 보시며 기뻐하시지도 않으십니다. 하느님께서 바라시는 건 용서하시고, 치유하시고, 회복시키시고, 한없이 자비를 베푸시고,  또 집으로 돌아오는 우리를 보시는 겁니다. 하지만 잃어버린 아들의 아버지가 아들 스스로 결단을 내리도록 한 것처럼 하느님께서는 우리 자신을 파멸시킬 위험을 무릅쓰시면서까지 하느님의 사랑을 거부할 자유를 우리에게 주시는 겁니다. 지옥은 하느님께서 선택하시는 게 아닙니다. 바로 우리가 선택하는 겁니다. "그러나 내가 너와 이야기할 그때에 너의 입을 열어 줄 터이니, 너는 ‘주 하느님이 이렇게 말한다.’ 하고 그들에게 말하여라. 들을 사람은 듣고 말 사람은 말게 하여라. 그들은 반항의 집안이기 때문이다.”(에제3,27) The Freedom to Refuse Love DECEMBER 16 Often hell is portrayed as a place of punishment and heaven as a place of reward. But this concept easily leads us to think about God as either a policeman, who tries to catch us when we make a mistake and send us to prison when our mistakes become too big, or a Santa Claus, who counts up all our good deeds and puts a reward in our stocking at the end of the year. God, however, is neither a policeman nor a Santa Claus. God does not send us to heaven or hell depending on how often we obey or disobey. God is love and only love. In God there is no hatred, desire for revenge, or pleasure in seeing us punished. God wants to forgive, heal, restore, show us endless mercy, and see us come home. But just as the father of the prodigal son let his son make his own decision, God gives us the freedom to move away from God’s love even at the risk of destroying ourselves. Hell is not God’s choice. It is ours. But when I speak to you, I will open your mouth and you shall say to them, "This is what the Sovereign Lord says."
