헨리 나웬  신부님(1932.1.24-1996.9.21)의 오! 그리고 늘! 5월 16일 <이승을 떠나는 걸 선물로 만든다는 것> Making Our Deaths Gifts 어떻게 하면 이승을 떠나는 걸 남들에게 선물로  줄 수 있을까요? 친지나 동무들이 이승을 떠나면서 남은 이들의 삶이 망가지고, 괴로움을 당하며 또는 오래도록 상처를 받는 건 아주 흔한 일입니다. 어떻게 해서든 이런 일을 겪지 않도록 해야 합니다. 이승을 떠날 시간이 머지 않으면 말로 하든 글로 써서 하든 가까이 있는 이들에게 건내는 생각은 아주 중요합니다. 그이들에게 고마워하는 마음을 드러내고, 부족했던 것들에 용서를 청하며, 그이들이 잘못한 걸 우리가 용서하고 또 그이들이 자책하지 않고 우리가 사는 동안 보여준 은총들을 기억하면서 계속 살아간다면 그 이상 바랄 게 없다는 생각을 건낸다면 우리가 이승을 떠나는 게 바로 참다운 선물이 될 수 있는 겁니다. "모세는 가서 온 이스라엘에게 이 말을 하였다.모세는 또 그들에게 말하였다. “나는 오늘로 백스무 살이나 되어 더 이상 나다닐 수가 없게 되었다. 또 주님께서는 나에게, ‘너는 이 요르단을 건너지 못할 것이다.’ 하고 말씀하셨다.--주님께서 친히 네 앞에 서서 가시고, 너와 함께 계시며, 너를 버려두지도 저버리지도 않으실 것이니, 너는 두려워해서도 낙심해서도 안 된다.--모세는 죽을 때에 나이가 백스무 살이었으나, 눈이 어둡지 않았고 기력도 없지 않았다."(신명31, 1-2, 8; 34,7) Making Our Deaths Gifts MAY 16 How do we make our deaths gifts for others? Very often people’s lives are destroyed, harmed, or permanently wounded by the deaths of their relatives or friends. We have to do whatever we can to avoid this. When we are near death what we say to those who are close to us, whether in spoken or in written words, is very important. When we express gratitude to them, ask forgiveness for our shortcomings and offer forgiveness for theirs, and express our sincere desire that they continue their lives without remorse but remembering the graces of our lives, then our deaths can become true gifts. Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel: "I am now a hundred and twenty years old and I am no longer able to lead you. The Lord has said to me, 'You shall not cross the Jordan.' The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; the Lord will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged."
