헨리 나웬  신부님(1932.1.24-1996.9.21)의 오! 그리고 늘! 7월 4일 <아버지의 눈물이라는  것> The Tears of the Father 되찾은 아들의 이야기에서 아버지는 많은 고통을 겪었습니다. 아버지는 작은아들이 앞으로 닥칠 실망이나 따돌림과 손가락질을 뻔히 알면서도 집을 떠나는 걸 지켜보았습니다. 큰아들이 분노와 울분으로 속을 끓이는 걸 보면서도 사랑으로 보듬고 편을 들어줄 수 없었습니다. 아버지의 삶에서 큰 부분을 차지하는 건 기다림이었습니다. 아버지는 억지로 작은아들을 집에 돌아오게 하거나 큰아들에게 원망하는 마음을 풀게 할순 없었습니다. 오로지 두 아들 스스로 제 발로 돌아올 수 밖엔 없었던 겁니다. 기나긴 세월 기다리는 동안 아버지의 눈에선 하염없이 눈물이 흘러내렸고 수많은 죽을 지경도 몸소 치뤘습니다. 이 고통을 겪으면서 아버지는  속빈 강정처럼 돼버렸습니다. 하지만 바로 이 마음 속 텅빈 곳에 아들들이 돌아올 때가 되면 기쁘게 맞아들일 수 있는 자리가 만들어진 겁니다. 해서 우리의 소명은 다름아닌 그 아버지처럼 되는 겁니다. "요셉은 자기 곁에 서 있는 모든 이들 앞에서 더 이상 자신을 억제하지 못하고, ---하고 외쳤다. ---요셉이 목 놓아 울자, 그 소리가 이집트 사람들에게 들리고 파라오의 궁궐에도 들렸다. 요셉이 형제들에게 말하였다. “내가 요셉입니다! ---. 내가 형님들의 아우 요셉입니다. 형님들이 이집트로 팔아넘긴 그 아우입니다. 그러나 이제는 저를 이곳으로 팔아넘겼다고 해서 괴로워하지도, 자신에게 화를 내지도 마십시오. ---(창세45,1-5 발췌) The Tears of the Father JULY 4 The father in the story of the prodigal son suffered much. He saw his younger son leave, knowing the disappointments, rejections and abuses facing him. He saw his older son become angry and bitter, and was unable to offer him affection and support. A large part of the father’s life has been waiting. He could not force his younger son to come home or his older son to let go of his resentments. Only they themselves could take the initiative to return. During these long years of waiting the father cried many tears and died many deaths. He was emptied out by suffering. But that emptiness had created a place of welcome for his sons when the time of their return came. We are called to become like that father.
