헨리 나웬 신부님(1932.1.24-1996.9.21)의 오! 그리고 늘! 10월 26일 <자비의 권위라는 것> The Authority of Compassion 교회는 종종 우리에게 깊은 상처를 남깁니다. 종교적 권위가 있는 이들이 말이나 태도 그리고 요구하는 걸로 이따금 상처를 주는 겁니다. 바로 우리가 몸을 담고 있는 종교에서 삶과 죽음이라는 문제들과 만나기 때문에 우리의 종교 감수성은 아주 쉽사리 상처받을 수 있는 겁니다. 목사님이나 신부님들은 자신들이 비판적으로 하는 말이나 거부하는 몸짓 또는 성마른 행동이 겪은 이들에게 평생 어떤 기억을 남길 수 있는지 좀처럼 깨닫지 못하는 겁니다. 사람들에겐 삶의 의미, 위로와 위안, 용서와 화해, 회복과 치유를 바라는 간절한 마음이 있는 겁니다. 하여 교회에서 어느 권위라도 지닌 이라면 누구라도 종교의 권위를 가장 잘 나타낼 수 있는 낱말이 바로 자비라는 걸 늘 명심해야 하는 겁니다. 자비로이 권위를 보여주신 예수님을 끊임없이 바라보아야 하는 겁니다. "나는 이 복음을 위하여 선포자와 사도와 스승으로 임명을 받았습니다. 그러한 까닭에 나는 이 고난을 겪고 있지만 부끄러워하지 않습니다. 나는 내가 누구를 믿는지 잘 알고 있으며, 또 내가 맡은 것을 그분께서 그날까지 지켜 주실 수 있다고 확신합니다. 그리스도 예수님 안에서 주어지는 믿음과 사랑으로, 나에게서 들은 건전한 말씀을 본보기로 삼으십시오. 우리 안에 머무르시는 성령의 도움으로, 그대가 맡은 그 훌륭한 것을 지키십시오."(2티모1,11-14) The Authority of Compassion OCTOBER 26 The Church often wounds us deeply. People with religious authority often wound us by their words, attitudes, and demands. Precisely because our religion brings us in touch with the questions of life and death, our religious sensibilities can get hurt most easily. Ministers and priests seldom fully realize how a critical remark, a gesture of rejection, or an act of impatience can be remembered for life by those to whom it is directed. There is such an enormous hunger for meaning in life, for comfort and consolation, for forgiveness and reconciliation, for restoration and healing, that anyone who has any authority in the Church should constantly be reminded that the best word to characterize religious authority is compassion. Let’s keep looking at Jesus whose authority was expressed in compassion. "And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day. What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.
