<다음 걸음을 내디딜만한 빛>
Enough Light for the Next Step

종종 우리는 미래를 볼 수 있었으면 합 니다. 이렇게 말합니다. "나에게 내년은 어떤 모습일까? 지금부터 5년, 10년 뒤 내 자리는 어디일까? 이 물음에 답은 없습니다. 대개 우리에겐 다음 걸음 즉 다음 시간이나 다음 날에 무엇을 해야 할지 볼 수 있을 정도의 빛이 있을 뿐입니다. 삶을 꾸려가는 솜씨는 볼 수 있는 것은 즐기고 어둠 속에 남아 있는 것은 불평하지 않는 겁니다.  계속 내딛을 수 있을 정도의 빛은 있다고 믿으며 다음 걸음을 내딛을 수 있다면 기쁘게 인생길을 걸어갈 수 있으며 얼마나 멀리까지 가는 지를 알고 놀랄 겁니다. 우리가 지닌 작은 빛에 즐거워 하고 모든 그림자를 단숨에 없애줄 큰 빛줄기를 찾지는 말아야 합니다.

Often we want to be able to see into the future. We say, “How will next year be for me? Where will I be five or ten years from now?” There are no answers to these questions. Mostly we have just enough light to see the next step: what we have to do in the coming hour or the following day. The art of living is to enjoy what we can see and not complain about what remains in the dark. When we are able to take the next step with the trust that we will have enough light for the step that follows, we can walk through life with joy and be surprised at how far we go. Let’s rejoice in the little light we carry and not ask for the great beam that would take all shadows away.
