이스라엘에게 축복하는 것을 주님께서 좋게 여기시는 것을 본 발라암은 전처럼 징조를 찾으러 가지 않고, 광야 쪽으로 얼굴만 돌렸다.

▶ Balaam, however, perceiving that the LORD was pleased to bless Israel, did not go aside as before to seek omens, but turned his gaze toward the desert.

발라암은 눈을 들어 지파별로 자리 잡은 이스라엘을 보았다. 그때에 하느님의 영이 그에게 내렸다.

▶ When he raised his eyes and saw Israel encamped, tribe by tribe, the spirit of God came upon him,

그리하여 그는 신탁을 선포하였다. “브오르의 아들 발라암의 말이다. 열린 눈을 가진 사람의 말이며

▶ and he gave voice to his oracle: The utterance of Balaam, son of Beor, the utterance of the man whose eye is true,

하느님의 말씀을 듣는 이의 말이다. 전능하신 분의 환시를 보고 쓰러지지만 눈은 뜨이게 된다.

▶ The utterance of one who hears what God says, and knows what the Most High knows, Of one who sees what the Almighty sees, enraptured, and with eyes unveiled:

야곱아, 너의 천막들이, 이스라엘아, 너의 거처가 어찌 그리 좋으냐!

▶ How goodly are your tents, O Jacob; your encampments, O Israel!

|
골짜기처럼 뻗어 있고 강가의 동산 같구나. 주님께서 심으신 침향나무 같고 물가의 향백나무 같구나.

|
▶ They are like gardens beside a stream, like the cedars planted by the LORD.
|
|

|
그의 물통에서는 물이 넘치고 그의 씨는 물을 흠뻑 먹으리라. 그들의 임금은 아각보다 뛰어나고 그들의 왕국은 위세를 떨치리라.

▶ His wells shall yield free-flowing waters, he shall have the sea within reach; His king shall rise higher than. . . . and his royalty shall be exalted.

|
그들을 이집트에서 이끌어 내신 하느님은 그들에게 들소의 뿔 같은 분이시다. 그들은 자기들에게 맞서는 민족들을 집어삼키고 그 뼈를 짓부수며 화살로 쳐부수리라.

▶ It is God who brought him out of Egypt, a wild bull of towering might. He shall devour the nations like grass, their bones he shall strip bare.

|
웅크리고 엎드린 모습이 수사자 같고 암사자 같으니 누가 그들을 일으켜 세우랴? 너희에게 축복하는 이는 복을 받고 너희를 저주하는 자는 저주를 받으리라.”

▶ He lies crouching like a lion, or like a lioness; who shall arouse him? Blessed is he who blesses you, and cursed is he who curses you!

발락은 발라암에게 화가 나서, 손바닥을 치며 발라암에게 말하였다. “나는 원수들을 저주해 달라고 당신을 불렀소. 그런데 보시오, 당신은 이렇게 세 번씩이나 그들에게 축복해 주었소.

▶ Balak beat his palms together in a blaze of anger at Balaam and said to him, "It was to curse my foes that I summoned you here; yet three times now you have even blessed them instead!

그러니 이제 당장 당신 고향으로 물러가시오. 나는 당신을 극진히 대우해 주겠다고 했지만, 보다시피 당신이 대우를 받는 것을 주님이 막아 버렸소.”

▶ Be off at once, then, to your home. I promised to reward you richly, but the LORD has withheld the reward from you!"

그러자 발라암이 발락에게 말하였다. “임금님께서 저에게 보내신 사자들에게도 제가 이미 말하지 않았습니까?

▶ Balaam replied to Balak, "Did I not warn the very messengers whom you sent to me,
|

‘발락이 비록 그의 집에 가득 찰 만한 은과 금을 준다 하여도, 나는 주님의 분부를 어기고서는, 좋은 일이든 나쁜 일이든 내 마음대로 할 수가 없습니다. 나는 주님께서 말씀하신 것만 말해야 합니다.’ 하고 말입니다.

▶ 'Even if Balak gave me his house full of silver and gold, I could not of my own accord to anything, good or evil, contrary to the command of the LORD'? Whatever the LORD says I must repeat.

|
이제 저는 제 백성에게 돌아갑니다. 자, 뒷날에 저 백성이 임금님의 백성에게 어떻게 할 것인지나 알려 드리겠습니다.”

▶ "But now that I am about to go to my own people, let me first warn you what this people will do to your people in the days to come."

그러고 나서 그는 신탁을 선포하였다. “브오르의 아들 발라암의 말이다. 열린 눈을 가진 사람의 말이며

하느님의 말씀을 듣고 지극히 높으신 분의 지식을 아는 이의 말이다. 전능하신 분의 환시를 보고 쓰러지지만 눈은 뜨이게 된다.

나는 한 모습을 본다. 그러나 지금은 아니다. 나는 그를 바라본다. 그러나 가깝지는 않다. 야곱에게서 별 하나가 솟고 이스라엘에게서 왕홀이 일어난다. 그는 모압의 관자놀이를, 셋의 모든 자손의 정수리를 부수리라.

▶ I see him, though not now; I behold him, though not near: A star shall advance from Jacob, and a staff shall rise from Israel, That shall smite the brows of Moab, and the skulls of all the Shuthites,

▶ Till Edom is dispossessed, and no fugitive is left in Seir. Israel shall do valiantly,

야곱에게서는 통치자가 나와 이르에서 도망쳐 나온 자들을 멸망시키리라.”

▶ and Jacob shall overcome his foes.

|
그런 다음에 그는 아말렉을 보며 신탁을 선포하였다. “민족들 가운데 첫째인 아말렉. 그러나 그의 종말은 영원한 멸망이 되리라.”

▶ Upon seeing Amalek, Balaam gave voice to his oracle: First of the peoples was Amalek, but his end is to perish forever.

그는 또 카인족을 보며 신탁을 선포하였다. “네 거처는 든든하고 네 보금자리는 바위 위에 있다.

▶ Upon seeing the Kenites, he gave voice to his oracle: Your abode is enduring, O smith, and your nest is set on a cliff;

그러나 카인은 황폐하게 되리라. 아시리아가 너를 언제까지 사로잡아 둘 것인가?”

▶ Yet destined for burning - even as I watch - are your inhabitants.

그는 다시 신탁을 선포하였다. “아, 하느님께서 이 일을 하실 때에 누가 살아남으랴?

▶ Upon seeing. . . . he gave voice to his oracle: Alas, who shall survive of Ishmael,

|
키팀 쪽에서 배들이 온다. 그들은 아시리아를 억누르고 에베르를 억누르겠지만 그들도 영원히 멸망하리라.”

▶ to deliver his people from the hands of the Kittim? When they have conquered Asshur and conquered Eber, He too shall perish forever.

발라암은 일어나 제 고향으로 돌아갔다. 발락도 제 갈 길을 갔다.

▶ Then Balaam set out on his journey home; and Balak also went his way.
