“백성 가운데에서 지파마다 한 사람씩 열두 사람을 뽑아라.

▶ the LORD said to Joshua, "Choose twelve men from the people, one from each tribe,
|

|
그리고 그들에게, ‘저기 요르단 강 한복판, 사제들이 발을 움직이지 않고 서 있던 곳에서 돌 열두 개를 메고 건너와, 너희가 오늘 밤 묵을 곳에 놓아라.’ 하고 명령하여라.”

▶ and instruct them to take up twelve stones from this spot in the bed of the Jordan where the priests have been standing motionless. Carry them over with you, and place them where you are to stay tonight."

그래서 여호수아는 이스라엘 자손들 가운데에서 지파마다 한 사람씩 뽑아 두었던 열두 사람을 불러,

▶ Summoning the twelve men whom he had selected from among the Israelites, one from each tribe,

그들에게 말하였다. “주 너희 하느님의 궤 앞을 지나 요르단 강 한복판으로 들어가서, 이스라엘 자손들의 지파 수대로 저마다 돌을 한 개씩 어깨에 메고 오너라.

▶ Joshua said to them: "Go to the bed of the Jordan in front of the ark of the LORD, your God; lift to your shoulders one stone apiece, so that they will equal in number the tribes of the Israelites.

그리하여 그것들이 너희 가운데에서 표징이 되게 하여라. 뒷날 자손들이 너희에게 이 돌들이 무엇을 뜻하느냐고 물으면,

|
|
▶ In the future, these are to be a sign among you. When your children ask you what these stones mean to you,
|

너희는 그들에게 이렇게 대답해야 한다. ‘요르단 강 물이 주님의 계약 궤 앞에서 끊어졌다. 궤가 요르단을 건널 때에 요르단 강 물이 끊어진 것이다. 그래서 이 돌들은 이스라엘 자손들에게 영원한 기념비가 되었다.’”

▶ you shall answer them, 'The waters of the Jordan ceased to flow before the ark of the covenant of the LORD when it crossed the Jordan.' Thus these stones are to serve as a perpetual memorial to the Israelites."

이스라엘 자손들은 여호수아가 명령한 대로 하였다. 그들은 주님께서 여호수아에게 이르신 대로, 이스라엘 자손들의 지파 수대로 요르단 강 한복판에서 돌 열두 개를 메고 나와, 그들이 하룻밤을 묵을 곳까지 가져다가 그곳에 내려놓았다.

▶ The twelve Israelites did as Joshua had commanded: they took up as many stones from the bed of the Jordan as there were tribes of the Israelites, and carried them along to the camp site, where they placed them, according to the LORD'S direction.

여호수아는 요르단 강 한복판, 계약 궤를 멘 사제들의 발이 서 있던 곳에 돌 열두 개를 세워 놓았다. 그것들은 오늘날까지 거기에 있다.

▶ Joshua also had twelve stones set up in the bed of the Jordan on the spot where the priests stood who were carrying the ark of the covenant. They are there to this day.
|

|
백성에게 일러 주라고 주님께서 여호수아에게 명령하신 모든 일이, 모세가 여호수아에게 명령한 그대로 다 이루어지기까지, 궤를 멘 사제들은 요르단 강 한복판에 서 있었다. 그리고 백성은 서둘러 강을 건넜다.

▶ The priests carrying the ark remained in the bed of the Jordan until everything had been done that the LORD had commanded Joshua to tell the people. The people crossed over quickly,

온 백성이 강을 다 건너자, 주님의 궤와 사제들이 백성이 보는 앞에서 건넜다.

▶ and when all had reached the other side, the ark of the LORD, borne by the priests, also crossed to its place in front of them.

|
르우벤의 자손들과 가드의 자손들과 므나쎄 반쪽 지파가, 모세가 그들에게 이른 대로 무장을 하고 이스라엘 자손들 앞에 서서 건넜다.

|
▶ The Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh, armed, marched in the vanguard of the Israelites, as Moses had ordered.

|
무장을 갖춘 그들 약 사만 명은 주님 앞을 지나 예리코 벌판으로 싸우러 나아갔다.

|
|
▶ About forty thousand troops equipped for battle passed over before the LORD to the plains of Jericho.
|
|

|
그날 주님께서는 온 이스라엘이 보는 앞에서 여호수아를 높여 주셨다. 그리하여 그들은 모세가 살아 있는 동안 내내 그를 경외하였듯이, 여호수아도 경외하게 되었다.

▶ That day the LORD exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and thenceforth during his whole life they respected him as they had respected Moses.

|
주님께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다.

▶ Then the LORD said to Joshua,
|
|

“증언 궤를 멘 사제들에게 요르단에서 올라오라고 명령하여라.”

|
|
▶ "Command the priests carrying the ark of the commandments to come up from the Jordan."
|
|

|
그래서 여호수아가 사제들에게, “요르단에서 올라오너라.” 하고 명령하였다.

▶ Joshua did so,
|
|

|
주님의 계약 궤를 멘 사제들이 요르단 강 한복판에서 올라올 때, 그 사제들의 발바닥이 마른땅에 닿자마자, 요르단 강 물이 제자리로 돌아가서 전처럼 강 언덕에 넘쳤다.

▶ and when the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD had come up from the bed of the Jordan, as the soles of their feet regained the dry ground, the waters of the Jordan resumed their course and as before overflowed all its banks.

|
첫째 달 초열흘날, 백성은 요르단에서 올라와 예리코 동쪽 변두리에 있는 길갈에 진을 쳤다.

▶ The people came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and camped in Gilgal on the eastern limits of Jericho.

▶ saying to the Israelites, "In the future, when the children among you ask their fathers what these stones mean,

너희는 자손들에게 이렇게 알려 주어라. '이스라엘이 이 요르단을 마른땅으로 건넜다.

|
|
|
▶ you shall inform them, 'Israel crossed the Jordan here on dry ground.'

|
그것은 주 너희 하느님께서 우리가 갈대 바다를 다 건널 때까지 우리 앞에서 그 바다를 마르게 하신 것처럼, 주 너희 하느님께서 우리가 요르단을 다 건널 때까지 그 물을 마르게 하셨기 때문이다.

▶ For the LORD, your God, dried up the waters of the Jordan in front of you until you crossed over, just as the LORD, your God, had done at the Red Sea, which he dried up in front of us until we crossed over;

|
그리하여 온 땅의 백성에게, 주님의 손이 얼마나 강한지 알게 하시고, 또 너희가 주 너희 하느님을 늘 경외하게 하시려는 것이었다.’”

▶ in order that all the peoples of the earth may learn that the hand of the LORD is mighty, and that you may fear the LORD, your God, forever."
