▶ Ahab had seventy descendants in Samaria. Jehu prepared letters and sent them to the city rulers, to the elders, and to the guardians of Ahab's descendants in Samaria.

이에 그들은 크게 두려워하며 말하였다. “두 임금도 그를 당해 내지 못하였는데 우리가 어떻게 당해 내겠소?”

▶ They were overcome with fright and said, "If two kings could not withstand him, how can we?"

그리하여 궁내 대신과 성읍 책임자와 원로들과 교육관들은 예후에게 이렇게 전갈을 보냈다. “저희는 장군님의 종들입니다. 장군님께서 말씀하시는 일이면 무엇이든지 하겠습니다. 저희는 어떤 임금도 세우지 않겠습니다. 장군님 보시기에 좋으실 대로 하십시오.”

▶ So the vizier and the ruler of the city, along with the elders and the guardians, sent this message to Jehu: "We are your servants, and we will do everything you tell us. We will proclaim no one king; do whatever you think best."

예후는 두 번째 편지를 이렇게 써 보냈다. “너희가 만일 내 편이 되어 내 말에 순종하겠다면, 너희 주군의 아들들 머리를 내일 이맘때까지, 이즈르엘에 있는 나에게 가져오너라.” 그때에 왕자들 일흔 명은 모두 그들을 키우는 그 성읍의 대관들과 함께 있었다.

▶ So Jehu wrote them a second letter: "If you are on my side and will obey me, count the heads of your master's sons and come to me in Jezreel at this time tomorrow." (The seventy princes were in the care of prominent men of the city, who were rearing them.)

▶ When the letter arrived, they took the princes and slew all seventy of them, put their heads in baskets, and sent them to Jehu in Jezreel.

▶ "They have brought the heads of the princes," a messenger came in and told him. "Pile them in two heaps at the entrance of the city until morning," he ordered.

아침이 되자 그는 나가 서서 온 백성에게 말하였다. “여러분은 죄가 없습니다. 내 주군을 칠 계획을 세우고 그를 살해한 것은 바로 나입니다. 그러나 여기 이 사람들은 모두 누가 쳐 죽였습니까?

▶ Going out in the morning, he stopped and said to all the people: "You are not responsible, and although I conspired against my lord and slew him, yet who killed all these?

그러니 이제 여러분은 주님께서 아합 집안을 두고 하신 말씀은 한마디도 땅에 떨어지지 않으리라는 것을 알아야 합니다. 주님께서는 당신의 종 엘리야를 통하여 말씀하신 것을 이루셨습니다.”

▶ Know that not a single word which the LORD has spoken against the house of Ahab shall go unfulfilled. The LORD has accomplished all that he foretold through his servant Elijah."

그러고 나서 예후는 이즈르엘에 남아 있던 아합 집안을 모두 쳐 죽였다. 또한 그 집안의 대관들과 친지들과 사제들을 하나도 남기지 않고 다 죽였다.

▶ Thereupon Jehu slew all who were left of the family of Ahab in Jezreel, as well as all his powerful supporters, intimates, and priests, leaving him no survivor.

▶ he came across kinsmen of Ahaziah, king of Judah. "Who are you?" he asked. "We are kinsmen of Ahaziah," they replied. "We are going down to visit the princes and the family of the queen mother."

예후는 “저자들을 사로잡아라.” 하고 일렀다. 부하들이 그들을 사로잡아, 벳 에켓의 구덩이 곁에서 그 마흔두 명을 죽였다. 예후는 그들 가운데 한 사람도 남기지 않았다.

▶ "Take them alive," Jehu ordered. They were taken alive, forty-two in number, then slain at the pit of Beth-eked. Not one of them was spared.

예후가 다시 그곳을 떠나서 가다가, 자기를 맞으러 나온 레캅의 아들 여호나답을 만났다. 예후는 그에게 인사한 다음, “내 마음이 그대 마음과 함께하듯, 그대 마음도 그러하오?” 하고 물었다. 여호나답이 “그렇습니다.” 하고 대답하자, 예후는 “그렇다면 그대의 손을 내미시오.” 하고 말하였다. 여호나답이 손을 내밀자 예후는 그를 자기 병거에 태웠다.

▶ When he had left there, Jehu met Jehonadab, son of Rechab, on the road. He greeted him and asked, "Are you sincerely disposed toward me, as I am toward you?" "Yes," replied Jehonadab. "If you are," continued Jehu, "give me your hand." Jehonadab gave him his hand, and Jehu drew him up into his chariot.

그러고는 말하였다. “함께 가서 주님에 대한 나의 열성이 어떠한지 보시오.” 이렇게 예후는 그를 자기 병거에 태우고

▶ "Come with me," he said, "and see my zeal for the LORD." And he took him along in his own chariot.

사마리아에 들어갔다. 거기에서 그는 주님께서 엘리야에게 하신 말씀대로, 아합에게 딸린 자로서 남은 자들을 모두 쳐서 없애 버렸다.

▶ When he arrived in Samaria, Jehu slew all who remained there of Ahab's line, doing away with them completely and thus fulfilling the prophecy which the LORD had spoken to Elijah.

▶ Jehu gathered all the people together and said to them: "Ahab served Baal to some extent, but Jehu will serve him yet more.
|

그러니 이제 바알의 예언자들과 숭배자들과 사제들을 모두 나에게 불러오십시오. 내가 바알에게 성대한 제사를 드릴 터이니 한 사람도 빠져서는 안 됩니다. 빠지는 사람은 누구나 살아남지 못할 것입니다.” 그러나 예후는 바알 숭배자들을 없애 버리려고 이런 계략을 꾸민 것이다.

▶ Now summon for me all Baal's prophets, all his worshipers, and all his priests. See that no one is absent, for I have a great sacrifice for Baal. Whoever is absent shall not live." This Jehu did as a ruse, so that he might destroy the worshipers of Baal.

예후가 “바알을 위하여 거룩한 집회를 열어라.” 하고 이르자, 집회가 선포되었다.

▶ Jehu said further, "Proclaim a solemn assembly in honor of Baal." They did so,

예후는 온 이스라엘에 사람들을 보냈다. 그리하여 바알 숭배자들이 한 사람도 남지 않고 모두 모여 와 바알 신전으로 들어가니, 이 끝에서 저 끝까지 가득 차게 되었다.

▶ and Jehu sent word of it throughout the land of Israel. All the worshipers of Baal without exception came into the temple of Baal, which was filled to capacity.

▶ Then Jehu said to the custodian of the wardrobe, "Bring out the garments for all the worshipers of Baal." When he had brought out the garments for them,

▶ Jehu, with Jehonadab, son of Rechab, entered the temple of Baal and said to the worshipers of Baal, "Search and be sure that there is no worshiper of the LORD here with you, but only worshipers of Baal."

그런 다음에 그들이 희생 제물과 번제물을 드리려고 안으로 들어갔을 때, 밖에서는 예후가 군사 여든 명을 배치하고 그들에게 일렀다. “내가 너희 손에 넘겨주는 이자들 가운데 하나라도 빠져나가게 하는 사람은 대신 목숨을 잃을 것이다.”

▶ Then they proceeded to offer sacrifices and holocausts. Now Jehu had stationed eighty men outside with this warning, "If one of you lets anyone escape of those whom I shall deliver into your hands, he shall pay life for life."

▶ As soon as he finished offering the holocaust, Jehu said to the guards and officers, "Go in and slay them. Let no one escape." So the guards and officers put them to the sword and cast them out. Afterward they went into the inner shrine of the temple of Baal,

▶ Then they smashed the stele of Baal, tore down the building, and turned it into a latrine, as it remains today.

예후의 죄

그러나 예후는 이스라엘을 죄짓게 한, 느밧의 아들 예로보암의 죄, 곧 베텔과 단에 있는 금송아지 숭배에서는 돌아서지 않았다.

▶ However, he did not desist from the sins which Jeroboam, son of Nebat, had caused Israel to commit, as regards the golden calves at Bethel and at Dan.

주님께서 예후에게 말씀하셨다. “네가 내 눈에 드는 옳은 일을 하였으니 참 잘하였다. 내가 마음에 품은 그대로 아합 집안의 일을 처리하였다. 그러므로 너의 사 대 자손까지 이스라엘의 왕좌에 앉을 것이다.”

▶ The LORD said to Jehu, "Because you have done well what I deem right, and have treated the house of Ahab as I desire, your sons to the fourth generation shall sit upon the throne of Israel."

그러나 예후는 마음을 다하여 주 이스라엘의 하느님의 율법에 따라 걷는 일에 충실하지 않았다. 그는 이스라엘을 죄짓게 한 예로보암의 죄에서는 돌아서지 않았던 것이다.

▶ But Jehu was not careful to observe wholeheartedly the law of the LORD, the God of Israel, since he did not desist from the sins which Jeroboam caused Israel to commit.

그때에 주님께서는 이스라엘을 조금씩 찢어 내기 시작하셨다. 하자엘이 이스라엘의 온 영토를 공격하였다.
