필리스티아인들은 사람들이 다윗에게 기름을 부어 그를 온 이스라엘의 임금으로 세웠다는 소식을 들었다. 필리스티아인들이 다윗을 잡으려고 모두 올라오자, 다윗은 그 보고를 듣고 그들 앞으로 나갔다.

▶ When the Philistines had heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, they went up in unison to seek him out. But when David heard of this, he marched out against them.

그때에 필리스티아인들은 이미 르파임 골짜기로 와서 그곳을 공격하고 있었다.

▶ Meanwhile the Philistines had come and raided the valley of Rephaim.

다윗이 하느님께 "필리스티아인들을 치러 올라가도 되겠습니까? 그들을 제 손에 넘겨주시겠습니까?" 하고 여쭈어 보자, 주님께서 그에게 이르셨다. "올라가라. 내가 그들을 네 손에 넘겨주겠다."

▶ David inquired of God, "Shall I advance against the Philistines, and will you deliver them into my power?" The LORD answered him, "Advance, for I will deliver them into your power."

그래서 다윗은 바알 프라침으로 올라가 그곳에서 그들을 쳐부순 다음, 이렇게 말하였다. “큰물로 무너뜨리듯, 하느님께서는 내 손으로 원수를 무너뜨리셨다.” 그리하여 그곳의 이름을 바알 프라침이라 하였다.

▶ They advanced, therefore, to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. Then David said, "God has used me to break through my enemies just as water breaks through a dam." Therefore that place was called Baal-perazim.

▶ The Philistines had left their gods there, and David ordered them to be burnt.

다윗이 다시 하느님께 여쭈어 보자, 하느님께서 그에게 이렇게 이르셨다. “그들을 쫓아 바로 올라가지 말고, 그들 뒤로 돌아 발삼 향나무 숲 맞은쪽에서 그들에게 다가가라.

▶ and again David inquired of God. But God answered him: "Do not try to pursue them, but go around them and come upon them from the direction of the mastic trees.

|
발삼 향나무 꼭대기에서 발걸음 소리가 들리거든, 그때에 나가서 싸워라. 하느님이 앞장서 나가 필리스티아인들의 군대를 칠 것이다.”

▶ When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mastic trees, then go forth to battle, for God has already gone before you to strike the army of the Philistines."

다윗은 하느님께서 명령하신 대로 하여, 기브온에서 게제르까지 필리스티아 군대를 쳤다.

▶ David did as God commanded him, and they routed the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer.

|
다윗의 명성이 모든 나라에 퍼져 나갔으며, 주님께서는 모든 민족들이 그를 두려워하게 하셨다.

▶ Thus David's fame was spread abroad through every land, and the LORD made all the nations fear him.
