When men began to multiply on earth and daughters were born to them,

the sons of heaven saw how beautiful the daughters of man were, and so they took for their wives as many of them as they chose.

Then the LORD said: "My spirit shall not remain in man forever, since he is but flesh. His days shall comprise one hundred and twenty years."

▶ 주님께서 말씀하셨다. “사람들은 살덩어리일 따름이니, 나의 영이 그들 안에 영원히 머물러서는 안 된다. 그들은 백이십 년밖에 살지 못한다.”

At that time the Nephilim appeared on earth (as well as later), after the sons of heaven had intercourse with the daughters of man, who bore them sons. They were the heroes of old, the men of renown.

When the LORD saw how great was man's wickedness on earth, and how no desire that his heart conceived was ever anything but evil,

▶ 주님께서는 사람들의 악이 세상에 많아지고, 그들 마음의 모든 생각과 뜻이 언제나 악하기만 한 것을 보시고,

he regretted that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was grieved.

▶ 세상에 사람을 만드신 것을 후회하시며 마음 아파하셨다.

|
So the LORD said: "I will wipe out from the earth the men whom I have created, and not only the men, but also the beasts and the creeping things and the birds of the air, for I am sorry that I made them."

▶ 그래서 주님께서 말씀하셨다. “내가 창조한 사람들을 이 땅 위에서 쓸어버리겠다. 사람뿐 아니라 짐승과 기어 다니는 것들과 하늘의 새들까지 쓸어버리겠다. 내가 그것들을 만든 것이 후회스럽구나!”

But Noah found favor with the LORD.

These are the descendants of Noah. Noah, a good man and blameless in that age,

▶ 노아의 역사는 이러하다. 노아는 당대에 의롭고 흠 없는 사람이었다. 노아는 하느님과 함께 살아갔다.

for he walked with God, begot three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

▶ 그리고 노아는 아들 셋, 곧 셈과 함과 야펫을 낳았다.

|
In the eyes of God the earth was corrupt and full of lawlessness.

▶ 세상은 하느님 앞에 타락해 있었다. 세상은 폭력으로 가득 차 있었다.

When God saw how corrupt the earth had become, since all mortals led depraved lives on earth,

|
▶ 하느님께서 내려다보시니, 세상은 타락해 있었다. 정녕 모든 살덩어리가 세상에서 타락한 길을 걷고 있었다.

he said to Noah: "I have decided to put an end to all mortals on earth; the earth is full of lawlessness because of them. So I will destroy them and all life on earth.

▶ 하느님께서 노아에게 말씀하셨다. “나는 모든 살덩어리들을 멸망시키기로 결정하였다. 그들로 말미암아 세상이 폭력으로 가득 찼다. 나 이제 그들을 세상에서 없애 버리겠다.

Make yourself an ark of gopherwood, put various compartments in it, and cover it inside and out with pitch.

▶ 너는 전나무로 방주 한 척을 만들어라. 그 방주에 작은 방들을 만들고, 안과 밖을 역청으로 칠하여라.

|
This is how you shall build it: the length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.

▶ 너는 그것을 이렇게 만들어라. 방주의 길이는 삼백 암마, 너비는 쉰 암마, 높이는 서른 암마이다.

|
Make an opening for daylight in the ark, and finish the ark a cubit above it. Put an entrance in the side of the ark, which you shall make with bottom, second and third decks.

▶ 그 방주에 지붕을 만들고 위로 한 암마 올려 마무리하여라. 문은 방주 옆쪽에 내어라. 그리고 그 방주를 아래층과 둘째 층과 셋째 층으로 만들어라.

Preparation for the Flood

|
I, on my part, am about to bring the flood (waters) on the earth, to destroy everywhere all creatures in which there is the breath of life; everything on earth shall perish.

|
▶ 이제 내가 세상에 홍수를 일으켜, 하늘 아래 살아 숨 쉬는 모든 살덩어리들을 없애 버리겠다. 땅 위에 있는 모든 것이 숨지고 말 것이다.

But with you I will establish my covenant; you and your sons, your wife and your sons' wives, shall go into the ark.

▶ 그러나 내가 너와는 내 계약을 세우겠다. 너는 아들들과 아내와 며느리들과 함께 방주로 들어가거라.

Of all other living creatures you shall bring two into the ark, one male and one female, that you may keep them alive with you.

▶ 그리고 온갖 생물 가운데에서, 온갖 살덩어리 가운데에서 한 쌍씩 방주에 데리고 들어가, 너와 함께 살아남게 하여라. 그것들은 수컷과 암컷이어야 한다.

Of all kinds of birds, of all kinds of beasts, and of all kinds of creeping things, two of each shall come into the ark with you, to stay alive.

▶ 새도 제 종류대로, 짐승도 제 종류대로, 땅바닥을 기어 다니는 것들도 제 종류대로, 한 쌍씩 너에게로 와서 살아남게 하여라.

Moreover, you are to provide yourself with all the food that is to be eaten, and store it away, that it may serve as provisions for you and for them."

▶ 그리고 너는 먹을 수 있는 온갖 양식을 가져다 쌓아 두어, 너와 그들의 양식이 되게 하여라.”

This Noah did; he carried out all the commands that God gave him.
