Early the next morning, Joshua moved with all the Israelites from Shittim to the Jordan, where they lodged before crossing over.

▶ 여호수아는 아침 일찍 일어나 이스라엘의 모든 자손과 함께 시팀을 떠나 요르단까지 갔다. 그들은 강을 건너기 전에 그곳에서 묵었다.

Three days later the officers went through the camp

▶ 사흘이 지날 무렵에 관리들이 진영 가운데를 지나가며,

and issued these instructions to the people: "When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD, your God, which the levitical priests will carry, you must also break camp and follow it,
|

▶ 백성에게 명령하였다. "주 여러분의 하느님의 계약 궤와 그 궤를 멘 레위인 사제들을 보거든, 여러분이 있던 곳을 떠나 그 뒤를 따라가시오.

that you may know the way to take, for you have not gone over this road before. But let there be a space of two thousand cubits between you and the ark. Do not come nearer to it."

▶ 여러분이 전에 이 길을 가 본 적이 없으니, 그렇게 해야 갈 길을 알 수 있을 것이오. 다만 여러분과 그 궤 사이에 이천 암마가량 거리를 띄우고, 그 궤에 더 이상 가까이 가지 마시오.”

Joshua also said to the people, "Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will perform wonders among you."

▶ 여호수아가 백성에게 말하였다. “너희는 자신을 거룩하게 하여라. 주님께서 내일 너희 가운데에서 놀라운 일을 하실 것이다.”

And he directed the priests to take up the ark of the covenant and go on ahead of the people; and they did so.
|

▶ 여호수아는 또 사제들에게 말하였다. “계약 궤를 메고 백성 앞에 서서 나아가라.” 그러자 그들은 계약 궤를 모시고 백성 앞에 서서 나아갔다.

Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know I am with you, as I was with Moses.

▶ 주님께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. “오늘 내가 온 이스라엘이 보는 앞에서 너를 높여 주기 시작하겠다. 그러면 내가 모세와 함께 있어 준 것처럼 너와도 함께 있어 준다는 것을 그들이 알게 될 것이다.

Now command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant to come to a halt in the Jordan when they reach the edge of the waters."

▶ 너는 계약 궤를 멘 사제들에게, ‘요르단 강 물가에 다다르거든 그 요르단 강에 들어가 서 있어라.’ 하고 명령하여라.”

So Joshua said to the Israelites, "Come here and listen to the words of the LORD, your God."

▶ 여호수아가 이스라엘 자손들에게 말하였다. “이리 가까이 와서 주 너희 하느님의 말씀을 들어라.”

He continued: "This is how you will know that there is a living God in your midst, who at your approach will dispossess the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites.

▶ 여호수아가 말을 계속하였다. “이제 일어날 이 일로써, 살아 계신 하느님께서 너희 가운데에 계시면서, 가나안족, 히타이트족, 히위족, 프리즈족, 기르가스족, 아모리족, 여부스족을 너희 앞에서 반드시 쫓아내시리라는 것을 알게 될 것이다.

The ark of the covenant of the LORD of the whole earth will precede you into the Jordan.

▶ 자, 온 땅의 주인이신 분의 계약 궤가 너희 앞에 서서 요르단을 건널 것이다.

(Now choose twelve men, one from each of the tribes of Israel.)

▶ 그러니 이제 이스라엘의 지파들 가운데에서 지파마다 한 사람씩 열두 사람을 뽑아라.

|
When the soles of the feet of the priests carrying the ark of the LORD, the Lord of the whole earth, touch the water of the Jordan, it will cease to flow; for the water flowing down from upstream will halt in a solid bank."

|
▶ 온 땅의 주인이신 주님의 궤를 멘 사제들의 발바닥이 요르단 강 물에 닿으면, 위에서 내려오던 요르단 강 물이 끊어져 둑처럼 멈추어 설 것이다.”

The people struck their tents to cross the Jordan, with the priests carrying the ark of the covenant ahead of them.

▶ 백성이 요르단을 건너려고 자기들의 천막에서 떠날 때에, 계약 궤를 멘 사제들이 백성 앞에 섰다.

The Crossing Begun

No sooner had these priestly bearers of the ark waded into the waters at the edge of the Jordan, which overflows all its banks during the entire season of the harvest,

▶ 드디어 궤를 멘 이들이 요르단에 다다랐다. 수확기 내내 강 언덕까지 물이 차 있었는데, 궤를 멘 사제들이 요르단 강 물가에 발을 담그자,

than the waters flowing from upstream halted, backing up in a solid mass for a very great distance indeed, from Adam, a city in the direction of Zarethan; while those flowing downstream toward the Salt Sea of the Arabah disappeared entirely. Thus the people crossed over opposite Jericho.

▶ 위에서 내려오던 물이 멈추어 섰다. 아주 멀리 차르탄 곁에 있는 성읍 아담에 둑이 생겨, 아라바 바다, 곧 ‘소금 바다’로 내려가던 물이 완전히 끊어진 것이다. 그래서 백성은 예리코 맞은쪽으로 건너갔다.

While all Israel crossed over on dry ground, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD remained motionless on dry ground in the bed of the Jordan until the whole nation had completed the passage.

▶ 주님의 계약 궤를 멘 사제들이 요르단 강 한복판 마른땅에 움직이지 않고 서 있는 동안, 온 이스라엘이 마른땅을 밟고 건너서, 마침내 온 겨레가 다 건너간 것이다.
