▶ When the Israelites who dwelt in Judea heard of all that Holofernes, commander-in-chief of Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Assyrians, had done to the nations, and how he had despoiled all their temples and destroyed them,

그러자 그들은 홀로페르네스를 몹시 두려워하며, 예루살렘과 자기들의 하느님이신 주님의 성전을 두고 걱정하였다.

▶ they were in extreme dread of him, and greatly alarmed for Jerusalem and the temple of the Lord, their God.

그들이 최근에야 유배에서 돌아오고 또 얼마 전에야 유다의 모든 백성이 한데 모여, 더럽혀졌던 기물과 제단과 하느님의 집을 축성하였기 때문이다.

▶ Now, they had lately returned from exile, and only recently had all the people of Judea been gathered together, and the vessels, the altar, and the temple been purified from profanation.

그리하여 그들은 사마리아, 코나, 벳 호론, 벨마인, 예리코의 모든 지역, 그리고 코바, 하초르, 살렘 계곡으로 전령을 보내어,

▶ So they sent word to the whole region of Samaria, to Kona, Beth-horon, Belmain, and Jericho, to Choba and Aesora, and to the valley of Salem.

곧바로 높은 산꼭대기를 모두 점령하고, 지역 안에 있는 마을들에 성을 쌓으며 전쟁 준비로 양식을 저장하게 하였다. 마침 그들의 들판은 수확이 막 끝난 뒤였다.

산악 지방의 고갯길들을 지키라고 하였다. 그것들은 유다로 들어가는 관문으로서, 그 길목이 겨우 두 사람이 지날 정도로 좁아 올라오는 자들을 쉽게 막을 수 있는 곳이었다.

▶ and instructed them to keep firm hold of the mountain passes, since these offered access to Judea. It would be easy to ward off the attacking forces, as the defile was only wide enough for two abreast.

▶ The Israelites carried out the orders given them by Joakim, the high priest, and the senate of the whole people of Israel, which met in Jerusalem.

이스라엘 남자들은 모두 하느님께 아주 간절히 부르짖고 또 아주 간절한 마음으로 고행하였다.

▶ All the men of Israel cried to God with great fervor and did penance -

|
그들은 물론 그들의 아내들과 아이들, 집짐승, 모든 이방인, 삯꾼, 팔려 온 종까지 허리에 자루옷을 둘렀다.

|
▶ they, along with their wives, and children, and domestic animals. All their resident aliens, hired laborers, and slaves also girded themselves with sackcloth.

|
그리고 예루살렘에 사는 모든 이스라엘 남자와 여자와 어린이는 성전 앞에 엎드려 머리에 재를 뿌리고, 주님 앞에 자기들의 자루옷을 펼쳐 놓고,

▶ And all the Israelite men, women and children who lived in Jerusalem prostrated themselves in front of the temple building, with ashes strewn on their heads, displaying their sackcloth covering before the Lord.

|
제단도 자루옷으로 둘렀다. 그러고 나서 아이들이 잡혀가지 않게 해 주십사고, 여자들이 끌려가지 않게 해 주십사고, 자기들이 상속받은 성읍들이 파괴되지 않게 해 주십사고, 그리고 성소가 더럽혀져 치욕스럽게도 이민족들의 비웃음거리가 되지 않게 해 주십사고, 이스라엘의 하느님께 마음을 모아 간절히 부르짖었다.

▶ The altar, too, they draped in sackcloth; and with one accord they cried out fervently to the God of Israel not to allow their children to be seized, their wives to be taken captive, the cities of their inheritance to be ruined, or the sanctuary to be profaned and mocked for the nations to gloat over.

|
주님께서는 그들의 소리를 귀여겨들어 주시고 그들의 곤경을 눈여겨보아 주셨다. 백성이 온 유다 땅에서, 그리고 예루살렘에서는 전능하신 주님의 성소 앞에서 여러 날 단식을 하고 있었던 것이다.

▶ The Lord heard their cry and had regard for their distress. For the people observed a fast of many days' duration throughout Judea, and before the sanctuary of the Lord Almighty in Jerusalem.

|
여호야킴 대사제와 주님을 모시는 모든 사제와 주님을 시중드는 이들은 허리에 자루옷을 두르고, 일일 번제물과 백성의 서원 제물과 자원 제물을 바쳤다.

▶ The high priest Joakim, and all the priests in attendance on the Lord who served his altar, were also girded with sackcloth as they offered the daily holocaust, the votive offerings, and the freewill offerings of the people.

그들은 머리쓰개에 재를 뿌린 채, 온 이스라엘 집안을 은혜로이 돌보아 주십사고 힘을 다하여 주님께 부르짖었다.

▶ With ashes upon their turbans, they cried to the Lord with all their strength to look with favor on the whole house of Israel.
