회의장 둘레에 선 사람들의 시끄러운 소리가 그치자, 아시리아 군대의 대장군 홀로페르네스가 온 외국인 무리 앞에서 아키오르와 모압의 모든 자손에게 말하였다.

▶ When the noise of the crowd surrounding the council had subsided, Holofernes, commander-in-chief of the Assyrian army, said to Achior, in the presence of the whole throng of coastland peoples, of the Moabites, and of the Ammonite mercenaries:

“네가 무엇이기에 에프라임의 품팔이꾼들을 데리고 오늘 이처럼 우리에게 예언을 한답시고, 저 이스라엘 종족의 하느님이 저들을 보호할 터이니 저들과 전쟁을 하지 말라고 말하느냐? 네부카드네자르 말고 신이 또 어디 있단 말이냐? 바로 그분께서 이제 당신의 병력을 보내시어 저들을 이 땅에서 전멸시키실 터인즉, 저들의 하느님이 저들을 구하지 못할 것이다.

▶ "Who are you, Achior, to prophesy among us as you have done today, and to tell us not to fight against the Israelites because their God protects them? What god is there beside Nebuchadnezzar? He will send his force and destroy them from the face of the earth. Their God will not save them;

그리고 그분의 종인 우리는 저들을 단 한 사람인 양 쳐부술 것이다. 저들은 우리 기병대의 위력을 당해 내지 못할 것이다.

▶ but we, the servants of Nebuchadnezzar, will strike them down as one man, for they will be unable to withstand the force of our cavalry.

우리는 기병대로 저들을 휩쓸어 버릴 것이다. 그리하여 저들의 산은 저들의 피로 젖고 평야는 저들의 시체로 가득 차리니, 저들의 발자국마저 우리 앞에서 남아나지 않을 정도로 저들은 완전히 멸망할 것이다. 이렇게 온 세상의 주인이신 네부카드네자르 임금님께서 말씀하신다. 그분께서 한번 하신 말씀은 하나도 헛것이 되지 않는다.

▶ We will overwhelm them with it, and the mountains shall be drunk with their blood, and their plains filled with their corpses. Not a trace of them shall survive our attack: they shall utterly perish, says King Nebuchadnezzar, lord of all the earth; for he has spoken, and his words shall not remain unfulfilled.

▶ As for you, Achior, you Ammonite mercenary, for saying these things in a moment of perversity you shall not see my face after today, until I have taken revenge on this race of people from Egypt.

내가 돌아올 때에 내 군대의 칼과 내 시종들의 창이 네 옆구리를 꿰뚫어, 너는 저들의 부상자들 사이에 쓰러질 것이다.

▶ Then at my return, the sword of my army or the spear of my servants will pierce your sides, and you shall fall among their slain.

이제 내 종들이 너를 저 산악 지방으로 끌고 가서 그 길목 곁의 한 성읍에 내버릴 것이다.

▶ My servants will now conduct you to the mountain region, and leave you at one of the towns along the ascent.

그러면 네가 저들과 함께 전멸할 때까지는 죽지 않을 것이다.

▶ You shall not die till you are destroyed together with them.
|

|
네가 정녕 저들이 점령되지 않으리라는 희망을 마음에 품고 있다면, 그렇게 얼굴을 떨굴 필요가 없다. 내가 한번 한 말은 하나도 어김이 없다.”

▶ If you still cherish the hope that they will not be taken, then there is no need for you to be downcast. I have spoken, and my words shall not prove false in any respect."

홀로페르네스는 자기 천막에서 시중드는 종들에게, 아키오르를 붙잡아 배툴리아로 데리고 가서 이스라엘 자손들에게 넘기라고 분부하였다.

▶ Then Holofernes ordered the servants who were standing by in his tent to seize Achior, conduct him to Bethulia, and hand him over to the Israelites.

홀로페르네스의 종들은 아키오르를 붙잡아 진영 밖 평야로 데리고 갔다. 그리고 그들은 평지를 가로질러 산악 지방으로 올라가 배툴리아 밑에 있는 샘터에 다다랐다.

▶ So the servants took him in custody and brought him out of the camp into the plain. From there they led him into the mountain region till they reached the springs below Bethulia.

산꼭대기에 있는 성읍 사람들이 그들을 보자 무기를 들고 산꼭대기에 있는 그 성읍에서 나왔다. 또 돌팔매질하는 사람들은 모두 돌을 던져 그들이 올라오지 못하게 막았다.

▶ When the men of the city saw them, they seized their weapons and ran out of the city to the crest of the ridge; and all the slingers blocked the ascent of Holofernes' servants by hurling stones upon them.

|
그들은 산 아래로 들어가 아키오르를 묶어서, 그곳 산발치에 던져 둔 채 저희 주인에게 돌아갔다.

▶ So they took cover below the mountain, where they bound Achior and left him lying at the foot of the mountain; then they returned to their lord.

|
성읍에서 나온 이스라엘 자손들은 아키오르를 보고서는 결박을 풀고 그를 배툴리아로 데려갔다. 그리고 그를 성읍의 수장들 앞에 세웠다.

▶ The Israelites came down to him from their city, loosed him, and brought him into Bethulia. They haled him before the rulers of the city,

그때의 수장들은 시메온 지파 출신 미카의 아들 우찌야, 오트니엘의 아들 카브리스, 말키엘의 아들 카르미였다.

▶ who in those days were Uzziah, son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon, Chabris, son of Gothoniel, and Charmis, son of Melchiel.

그들은 성읍의 원로들을 모두 소집하였다. 그러자 모든 젊은이와 여자들까지 회의장으로 달려갔다. 사람들이 아키오르를 온 백성 한가운데에 세우자, 우찌야가 그에게 어떻게 된 일이냐고 물었다.

▶ They then convened all the elders of the city; and all their young men, as well as the women, gathered in haste at the place of assembly. They placed Achior in the center of the throng, and Uzziah questioned him about what had happened.

아키오르는 홀로페르네스가 회의를 연 일과, 자기가 아시리아인들의 수장들 한가운데에서 한 말이며, 홀로페르네스가 이스라엘 집안을 두고 거만하게 지껄인 말을 그대로 전하였다.

▶ He replied by giving them an account of what was said in the council of Holofernes, and of all his own words among the Assyrian officers, and of all the boasting threats of Holofernes against the house of Israel.

그러자 백성은 엎드려 하느님께 경배하며 부르짖었다.

▶ At this the people fell prostrate and worshiped God; and they cried out:

|
“주 하늘의 하느님, 저들의 교만을 내려다보십시오. 그리고 비참하게 된 저희 겨레에게 자비를 베푸시고, 오늘, 당신께 봉헌된 이들의 얼굴을 굽어보아 주십시오.”

▶ "Lord, God of heaven, behold their arrogance! Have pity on the lowliness of our people, and look with favor this day on those who are consecrated to you."

그러고 나서 그들은 아키오르를 위로하며 크게 칭송하였다.

▶ Then they reassured Achior and praised him highly.

|
우찌야는 아키오르를 회의장에서 데리고 나가 자기 집으로 가서 원로들을 위하여 술잔치를 베풀었다. 그리고 그들은 그날 밤을 새우며 하느님께 도움을 청하였다.

▶ Uzziah brought him from the assembly to his home, where he gave a banquet for the elders. That whole night they called upon the God of Israel for help.
