“너희는 어찌하여 이스라엘 땅에서, ‘아버지가 신 포도를 먹었는데, 자식들의 이가 시다.’는 속담을 말해 대느냐?

▶ what is the meaning of this proverb that you recite in the land of Israel: "Fathers have eaten green grapes, thus their children's teeth are on edge"?

|
주 하느님의 말이다. 내가 살아 있는 한, 너희가 다시는 이 속담을 이스라엘에서 말하지 않을 것이다.

|
|
|
▶ As I live, says the Lord GOD: I swear that there shall no longer be anyone among you who will repeat this proverb in Israel.
|
|

|
보아라, 모든 목숨은 나의 것이다. 아버지의 목숨도 자식의 목숨도 나의 것이다. 죄지은 자만 죽는다.

▶ For all lives are mine; the life of the father is like the life of the son, both are mine; only the one who sins shall die.

|
어떤 사람이 의로워서 공정과 정의를 실천하면,

▶ If a man is virtuous - if he does what is right and just,
|
|

|
곧 산 위에서 음식을 먹지 않고, 이스라엘 집안의 우상들에게 눈을 들어 올리지 않으며, 이웃의 아내를 더럽히지 않고 달거리하는 여자를 가까이하지 않으며,

|
|
▶ if he does not eat on the mountains, nor raise his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel; if he does not defile his neighbor's wife, nor have relations with a woman in her menstrual period;

|
사람을 학대하지 않고 빚 담보로 받은 것을 돌려주며, 강도 짓을 하지 않고 굶주린 이에게 빵을 주며, 헐벗은 이에게 옷을 입혀 주고,

|
|
▶ if he oppresses no one, gives back the pledge received for a debt, commits no robbery; if he gives food to the hungry and clothes the naked;

|
변리를 받으려고 돈을 내놓지 않으며, 이자를 받지 않고 불의에서 손을 떼며, 사람들 사이에서 진실한 판결을 내리면서,

|
▶ if he does not lend at interest nor exact usury; if he holds off from evildoing, judges fairly between a man and his opponent;
|

|
나의 규정들을 따르고 나의 법규들을 준수하여 진실하게 지키면, 그는 의로운 사람이니 반드시 살 것이다. 주 하느님의 말이다.

▶ if he lives by my statutes and is careful to observe my ordinances, that man is virtuous - he shall surely live, says the Lord GOD.

|
이 사람이 아들을 낳았는데, 그 아들이 폭력을 휘두르고 남의 피를 흘리며, 다음과 같은 것들 가운데 하나라도 저지르면,

▶ But if he begets a son who is a thief, a murderer, or who does any of these things
|

곧 아버지는 이런 것을 하나도 저지르지 않았다 하더라도, 그 아들이 산 위에서 음식을 먹거나, 이웃의 아내를 더럽히거나,

|
|
▶ (though the father does none of them), a son who eats on the mountains, defiles the wife of his neighbor,
|

|
가련한 이와 가난한 이를 학대하거나, 강도 짓을 하거나, 담보로 받은 것을 돌려주지 않거나, 우상들에게 눈을 들어 올리며 역겨운 짓을 하거나,

|
▶ oppresses the poor and needy, commits robbery, does not give back a pledge, raises his eyes to idols, does abominable things,
|
|

|
변리를 받으려고 돈을 내놓거나, 이자를 받으면, 아들이 살 것 같으냐? 그는 살지 못한다. 이 모든 역겨운 짓을 저질렀으니, 그는 반드시 죽어야 한다. 그가 죽은 책임은 자신에게 있다.

|
▶ lends at interest and exacts usury - this son certainly shall not live. Because he practiced all these abominations, he shall surely die; his death shall be his own fault.

|
이 사람이 아들을 낳았는데, 그 아들이 아버지가 저지른 모든 죄를 보고 깨달아, 그대로 따라 하지 않으면,

▶ On the other hand, if a man begets a son who, seeing all the sins his father commits, yet fears and does not imitate him;
|

곧 산 위에서 음식을 먹지 않고, 이스라엘 집안의 우상들에게 눈을 들어 올리지 않으며, 이웃의 아내를 더럽히지 않고,

▶ a son who does not eat on the mountains, or raise his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, or defile his neighbor's wife;

사람을 학대하지 않으며, 담보물을 잡지 않고 강도 짓을 하지 않으며, 굶주린 이에게 먹을거리를 주고 헐벗은 이에게 옷을 입혀 주며,

▶ who does not oppress anyone, or exact a pledge, or commit robbery; who gives his food to the hungry and clothes the naked;

불의에서 손을 떼고 변리도 이자도 받지 않으면서, 나의 법규들을 지키고 나의 규정을 따르면, 그는 자기 아버지의 죄 때문에 죽지 않고, 반드시 살 것이다.

▶ who holds off from evildoing, accepts no interest or usury, but keeps my ordinances and lives by my statutes - this one shall not die for the sins of his father, but shall surely live.

그렇지만 그의 아버지는 난폭한 짓을 하고 형제에게 강도 짓을 하며, 자기 백성 가운데에서 좋지 않은 짓을 하였으므로, 자기 죄 때문에 죽을 것이다.

▶ Only the father, since he violated rights, and robbed, and did what was not good among his people, shall in truth die for his sins.

|
그런데 너희는, ‘왜 그 아들이 아버지가 지은 죗값을 짊어지지 않는가?’ 하고 묻는다. 그 아들이 공정과 정의를 실천하고 나의 모든 규정을 준수하여 지켰으므로, 그는 반드시 살 것이다.

▶ You ask: "Why is not the son charged with the guilt of his father?" Because the son has done what is right and just, and has been careful to observe all my statutes, he shall surely live.

|
죄지은 자만 죽는다. 아들은 아버지의 죗값을 짊어지지 않고, 아버지는 아들의 죗값을 짊어지지 않는다. 의인의 의로움은 그 자신에게만 돌아가고, 악인의 죄악도 그 자신에게만 돌아간다.

|
▶ Only the one who sins shall die. The son shall not be charged with the guilt of his father, nor shall the father be charged with the guilt of his son. The virtuous man's virtue shall be his own, as the wicked man's wickedness shall be his own.
|

|
그러나 악인도 자기가 저지른 모든 죄를 버리고 돌아서서, 나의 모든 규정을 준수하고 공정과 정의를 실천하면, 죽지 않고 반드시 살 것이다.

▶ But if the wicked man turns away from all the sins he committed, if he keeps all my statutes and does what is right and just, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

|
그가 저지른 모든 죄악은 더 이상 기억되지 않고, 자기가 실천한 정의 때문에 살 것이다.

▶ None of the crimes he committed shall be remembered against him; he shall live because of the virtue he has practiced.

|
내가 정말 기뻐하는 것이 악인의 죽음이겠느냐? 주 하느님의 말이다. 악인이 자기가 걸어온 길을 버리고 돌아서서 사는 것이 아니겠느냐?

|
▶ Do I indeed derive any pleasure from the death of the wicked? says the Lord GOD. Do I not rather rejoice when he turns from his evil way that he may live?

|
그러나 의인이 자기 정의를 버리고 돌아서서 불의를 저지르고, 악인이 저지르는 온갖 역겨운 짓을 따라 하면, 살 수 있겠느냐? 그가 실천한 모든 정의는 기억되지 않은 채, 자기가 저지른 배신과 자기가 지은 죄 때문에 죽을 것이다.

▶ And if the virtuous man turns from the path of virtue to do evil, the same kind of abominable things that the wicked man does, can he do this and still live? None of his virtuous deeds shall be remembered, because he has broken faith and committed sin; because of this, he shall die.

그런데 너희는, ‘주님의 길은 공평하지 않다.’고 말한다. 이스라엘 집안아, 들어 보아라. 내 길이 공평하지 않다는 말이냐? 오히려 너희의 길이 공평하지 않은 것 아니냐?

▶ You say, "The LORD'S way is not fair!" Hear now, house of Israel: Is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair?

|
의인이 자기 정의를 버리고 돌아서서 불의를 저지르면, 그것 때문에 죽을 것이다. 자기가 저지른 불의 때문에 죽는 것이다.

▶ When a virtuous man turns away from virtue to commit iniquity, and dies, it is because of the iniquity he committed that he must die.
|
|

|
그러나 악인이라도 자기가 저지른 죄악을 버리고 돌아서서 공정과 정의를 실천하면, 그는 자기 목숨을 살릴 것이다.

▶ But if a wicked man, turning from the wickedness he has committed, does what is right and just, he shall preserve his life;
|
|

|
자기가 저지른 모든 죄악을 생각하고 그 죄악에서 돌아서면, 그는 죽지 않고 반드시 살 것이다.

▶ since he has turned away from all the sins which he committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
|
|

|
그런데도 이스라엘 집안은, ‘주님의 길은 공평하지 않다.’고 말한다. 이스라엘 집안아, 내 길이 공평하지 않다는 말이냐? 오히려 너희의 길이 공평하지 않은 것 아니냐?

▶ And yet the house of Israel says, "The LORD'S way is not fair!" Is it my way that is not fair, house of Israel, or rather, is it not that your ways are not fair?

|
그러므로 이스라엘 집안아, 나는 저마다 걸어온 길에 따라 너희를 심판하겠다. 주 하느님의 말이다. 회개하여라. 너희의 모든 죄악에서 돌아서라. 그렇게 하여 죄가 너희에게 걸림돌이 되지 않게 하여라.

▶ Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, each one according to his ways, says the Lord GOD. Turn and be converted from all your crimes, that they may be no cause of guilt for you.

|
너희가 지은 모든 죄악을 떨쳐 버리고, 새 마음과 새 영을 갖추어라. 이스라엘 집안아, 너희가 어찌하여 죽으려 하느냐?

|
▶ Cast away from you all the crimes you have committed, and make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you die, O house of Israel?

|
나는 누구의 죽음도 기뻐하지 않는다. 주 하느님의 말이다. 그러니 너희는 회개하고 살아라.”

▶ For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies, says the Lord GOD. Return and live!
