1 악인은 쫓는 자가 없어도 달아나지만 의인은 사자처럼 당당하다. 1 The wicked man flees although no one pursues him; but the just man, like a lion, feels sure of himself.
2 나라에 반란이 일어나면 우두머리가 많아지지만 슬기롭고 올바름을 아는 사람이 다스리면 나라가 오래간다. 2 If a land is rebellious, its princes will be many; but with a prudent man it knows security.
3 자기도 가난하면서 빈곤한 이들을 억누르는 사람은 양식을 남김없이 쓸어 가는 호우와 같다. 3 A rich man who oppresses the poor is like a devastating rain that leaves no food.
4 율법을 저버리는 자들은 악인을 찬양하지만 율법을 지키는 이들은 그런 자에게 맞선다. 4 Those who abandon the law praise the wicked man, but those who keep the law war against him.
5 악한 사람들은 바른 것을 깨닫지 못하지만 주님을 찾는 이들은 모든 것을 깨닫는다. 5 Evil men understand nothing of justice, but those who seek the LORD understand all.
6 그릇된 길을 걷는 부자보다 가난해도 흠 없이 걷는 이가 낫다. 6 Better a poor man who walks in his integrity than he who is crooked in his ways and rich.
7 슬기로운 자식은 율법을 준수하지만 폭식가들과 사귀는 자는 아버지를 욕되게 한다. 7 He who keeps the law is a wise son, but the gluttons' companion disgraces his father.
8 변리와 이자로 재산을 불리는 자는 빈민을 불쌍히 여기는 이를 위해 그것을 쌓는 것이다. 8 He who increases his wealth by interest and overcharge gathers it for him who is kind to the poor.
9 율법을 듣지 않고 귀를 돌리는 자는 그 기도마저 역겹다. 9 When one turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.
10 올곧은 이들을 나쁜 길로 유혹하는 자는 제 구렁에 자기가 빠지지만 흠 없는 이들은 좋은 것을 상속받는다. 10 He who seduces the upright into an evil way will himself fall into his own pit. (And blameless men will gain prosperity.)
11 부자가 제 눈에는 지혜롭게 보여도 가난하지만 슬기로운 이는 그를 꿰뚫어 본다. 11 The rich man is wise in his own eyes, but a poor man who is intelligent sees through him.
12 의인들이 승리하면 그 영광이 크지만 악인들이 일어서면 사람들이 숨어 버린다. 12 When the just are triumphant, there is great jubilation; but when the wicked gain preeminence, people hide.
13 자기 잘못을 감추는 자는 성공하지 못하지만 그것을 고백하고 끊어 버리는 이는 자비를 얻는다. 13 He who conceals his sins prospers not, but he who confesses and forsakes them obtains mercy.
14 행복하여라, 늘 두려워하는 마음을 지닌 사람! 그러나 마음을 완고하게 하는 자는 불행에 빠진다. 14 Happy the man who is always on his guard; but he who hardens his heart will fall into evil.
15 가난한 백성을 사악하게 다스리는 자는 포효하는 사자와 덮치는 곰과 같다. 15 Like a roaring lion or a ravenous bear is a wicked ruler over a poor people.
16 슬기가 모자라는 제후가 억압은 많이 한다. 부정한 이득을 미워하는 이는 오래 산다. 16 The less prudent the prince, the more his deeds oppress. He who hates ill-gotten gain prolongs his days.
17 살인한 죄책감에 시달리는 사람은 구렁에 이르기까지 도망 다닌다. 아무도 그를 붙들지 마라. 17 Though a man burdened with human blood were to flee to the grave, none should support him.
18 온전하게 걷는 이는 구원을 받고 그릇된 길을 걷는 자는 구렁에 빠진다. 18 He who walks uprightly is safe, but he whose ways are crooked falls into the pit.
19 자기 땅을 가꾸는 이는 양식으로 배부르고 헛것을 좇는 자는 가난으로 배부른다. 19 He who cultivates his land will have plenty of food, but from idle pursuits a man has his fill of poverty.
20 성실한 사람은 많은 복을 받지만 부자가 되려고 서두르는 자는 벌을 면하지 못한다. 20 The trustworthy man will be richly blessed; he who is in haste to grow rich will not go unpunished.
21 한쪽을 편드는 것은 좋지 않다. 사람은 빵 한 조각 때문에 죄를 짓기도 한다. 21 To show partiality is never good: for even a morsel of bread a man may do wrong.
22 눈길이 탐욕스러운 사람은 재물 모으기에 급급하지만 빈곤이 자기에게 들이닥치리라는 것은 깨닫지 못한다. 22 The avaricious man is perturbed about his wealth, and he knows not when want will come upon him.
23 남을 훈계해 주는 이가 결국은 아첨하는 자보다 더 큰 호의를 얻는다. 23 He who rebukes a man gets more thanks in the end than one with a flattering tongue.
24 제 아버지와 어머니를 강탈하고도 “죄 없다!” 하는 자 그는 살인자와 한통속이다. 24 He who defrauds father or mother and calls it no sin, is a partner of the brigand.
25 욕심 많은 자는 싸움을 일으키지만 주님을 신뢰하는 이는 풍요를 누린다. 25 The greedy man stirs up disputes, but he who trusts in the LORD will prosper.
26 제 마음을 신뢰하는 자는 우둔한 자이지만 지혜 속에 걷는 이는 구원을 받는다. 26 He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is safe.
27 가난한 자에게 주는 이는 모자람이 없지만 못 본 체하는 자는 많은 저주를 받는다. 27 He who gives to the poor suffers no want, but he who ignores them gets many a curse.
28 악인들이 일어서면 사람들이 숨어 버리고 그들이 멸망하면 의인들이 많아진다. 28 When the wicked gain pre-eminence, other men hide; but at their fall the just flourish.
